1 NORTH YORKSHIRE Craven 2/1339 (C ) SD SD KILNSEY TO BUCKDEN WATER PIPELINE Kilnsey to Buckden Water Pipeline, North Yorkshire. Geophysical Survey (Report no. 841) Webb, A Leeds : Archaeological Services WYAS, 2000, 23pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Services WYAS A fluxgate gradiometer survey covering approximately 2.8ha was carried out along part of the proposed route of a water pipeline. The survey was centred around an area in which three circular parchmarks had been identified. Anomalies corresponding to the parch-marked features were identified. Other anomalies were identified although it was unclear whether these were geological or archaeological in origin. Rapid magnetic scanning was also carried out at four other sites where earthworks of unknown origin had been identified. No anomalies of a possible archaeological origin were identified during the scanning. [Au(abr)] Hambleton 2/1340 (C ) SE MARKET PLACE, THIRSK 33 Market Place, Thirsk 49pp, figs, tabs, refs, colour pls The evaluation recorded evidence of medieval and post-medieval activity. This evidence was largely in the form of finds recovered although a few structural remains were also encountered. [AIP], MO 2/1341 (C ) SE ACASTER HILL, HUSTHWAITE TSEP. Site 716: Acaster Hill, Husthwaite: Archaeological Excavation Report Wood, P Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2000, 26pp, figs, tabs, refs, colour pls Work undertaken by: Northern Archaeological Associates A single Iron Age roundhouse was identified during the evaluation along the proposed route of the Teesside to Saltend Ethylene Pipeline. Finds recovered were dated from the Late Iron Age although the site did not appear to continue into the Roman period. 2 The evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of a new supermarket. Two trenches were investigated and revealed various features from the medieval period, such as gullies, pits and a possible well. Other later features such as post-medieval post holes were also noted. [AIP] 2/1343 (C ) NZ LAND AT WORSALL MANOR FARM Land at Worsall Manor Farm: Archaeological Assessment Parry, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2000, 10pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Northern Archaeological Associates No archaeological features were discovered during the excavations on the development area. Analysis of pottery dated a subsoil horizon to the medieval period. [AIP] 2/1344 (C ) SE STATION ROAD, THIRSK Station Road, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Evaluation Heawood, R Lancaster : Lancaster University Archaeological Unit, 2000, 38pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Lancaster University Archaeological Unit Five trial trenches were excavated following the submission of a planning application for the development of a petrol filling station. Part of the site was included within the Thirsk Conservation Area, and the north-eastern border of the application site lay adjacent to Thirsk Castle, a SAM. Trenches 1 and 2 demonstrated that undated archaeological features were present in the northern part of the site. However, the features identified during this evaluation were protected by at least 0.8m of modern hardcore and accumulated silty sand of unknown date. Trenches 3, 4 and 5 evaluated the footprint of the proposed filling station, taking into consideration those areas already disturbed by fuel tanks or contaminated by fuel spillage. No archaeological remains were identified, and no further archaeological investigation was recommended on this part of the site. These findings contribute significantly to the knowledge of the appearance of the Abbey at the time of the Dissoloution.[Au(abr)] 2
3 2/1346 (C ) SE KNARESBOROUGH CASTLE GROUNDS Knaresborough Castle Grounds: Eastern Perimeter Defences, Knaresborough Cale, K J Harrogate : Kevin J Cale Archaeological Consultant, 2000, 19pp, figs, colour pls Work undertaken by: Kevin J Cale Archaeological Consultant The investigations into the castle grounds were instigated because of a proposed development to plant a yew hedge. Two sample trenches were investigated which provided data about previous ground surfaces. 19th and 20th century finds were located in the topsoil while an un-excavated layer was discovered at the bottom of the trial trenches. This layer was thought to be possibly 17th century but was not investigated further as it was thought that it was deep enough to be preserved in situ. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: PM, UD 2/1347 (C ) SE NO 10 MARKET PLACE, RIPON Programme of Archaeological Work at No. 10 Market Place, Ripon Border Archaeology Leominster : Border Archaeology, 2000, 29pp, figs, tabs, refs, pls Work undertaken by: Border Archaeology The sample trenches and excavations were undertaken on the site as a response to a planning application to re-develop the site. Although numerous features were recorded during groundworks (pipes, cobbled surfaces and a building), they were all dated to the post-medieval period and were no older than 300 years. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: PM 2/1348 (C ) SE NO 4 STONEBRIDGEGATE, RIPON Report on No 4, Stonebridgegate, Ripon On-Site Archaeology York : On-Site Archaeology, 2000, 35pp, figs, tabs, refs, colour psl Work undertaken by: On-Site Archaeology The excavation was conducted on the site of the proposed housing estate. The remains of numerous pits were discovered which produced a small quantity of medieval pot sherds. An assemblage of unstratified post-medieval pottery was also recovered. [AIP] 2/1349 (C ) SE PRIEST LANE, RIPON New School, Priest Lane, Ripon: Assessment Report on an Archaeological Excavation McComish, J York : York Archaeological Trust, 2001, 80pp, figs, refs, colour pls, tabs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The archaeological investigation was undertaken on the site of the new school development. Features encountered during the sample trenches were either 11th-14th or 17th-20th century in date. The earlier features were medieval field boundaries and rubbish pits, while the later features were associated with post-medieval gravel extraction. [AIP] 3
4 2/1350 (C ) SE THE MARKET PLACE, RIPON The Market Place, Ripon: Report on an Archaeological Evaluation Finlayson, R York : York Archaeological Trust, 2000, 24pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The evaluation on the site of the proposed market place redevelopment revealed that the site was occupied in the medieval period and a cobbled surface and butchery waste may date to this period. Other finds and surfaces show that the site was in continual use throughout the post-medieval period although its usage appears to have remained the same. [AIP] 2/1351 (C ) SE WAKEMANS HOUSE, RIPON Wakeman's House, Ripon: Report on an Archaeological Excavation York Archaeological Trust York : York Archaeological Trust, 2000, 52pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The archaeological investigations revealed the remains of a 12th century building on the site of the proposed market place refurbishment scheme. The majority of the deposits appeared to be primary and the recovery of sparrow hawk bones hinted at a possible high status building. [AIP] Richmondshire 2/1352 (C ) SE COWSTAND FARM, CATTERICK LANE, CATTERICK Archaeological Investigations at Cowstand Farm, Catterick Lane, Catterick Taylor-Wilson, R Durham : Pre-Construct Archaeology, 2000, 42pp, figs, tabs, colour pls, refs Work undertaken by: Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd The erection of a mobile phone mast base station resulted in an archaeological desk-based survey and small-scale evaluation. The archaeological investigations revealed that the base mast was directly above a Roman inhumation that was part of a cemetery complex with ditch features. Other ditches were noted which, although undated, appeared to cut the cemetery and therefore hinted at a change of land use. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: RO, UD 2/1353 (C ) NZ THE COCKPIT, RICHMOND CASTLE The Cockpit, Richmond Castle: Archaeological Evaluation Parry, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2000, 8pp, figs Work undertaken by: Northern Archaeological Associates The evaluation was undertaken in order to identify several anomalies that had been observed in a previous geophysical survey. The excavation revealed that the site had previously been gardens with the remains of post-medieval walls, paths and other garden features being recovered. Geophysical Survey Volume I (Report No. 809) Webb, A & Whittingham, M Leeds : Archaeological Services WYAS, 2000, 33pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Services WYAS A geophysical survey, covering approximately 9.5ha, on eight different sites, was carried out along the projected route of the East Moor Pipeline. Sites 9B, 10 and 20 had no probable archaeological anomalies while on Sites 2, 9A and 24 only archaeological anomalies indicative of ridge and furrow ploughing were identified. However, on Sites 11 and 12 anomalies indicative of infilled archaeological ditches (on Site 12 these formed probable enclosures) as well as discrete anomalies possibly indicative of pits or other features likely to have been associated with occupation were identified. [Au(abr)] 2/1355 (C ) TA HUNMANBY INDUSTRIAL ESTATE Hunmanby Industrial Estate, Bridglington Rd, Hunmanby: Archaeological Evaluation 32pp, figs, refs, tabs Archaeological investigations were undertaken on the site of the proposed cable relay station. A geophysical survey of the site indicated ridge and furrow over the southern half of the site but no archaeological features were observed to the north. Trial trenching also produced no archaeological features although a small assemblage of flint artefacts was recovered. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: LPR, MD 2/1356 (C ) SE SITE 709 BP TSEP BP TSEP Site 709 Hopkinson, G York : On-Site Archaeology, 2001, 27pp, figs, colour pls, refs Work undertaken by: On-Site Archaeology The excavations on the site were carried out along the BP pipeline corridor. A large amount of features including ditches were undatable and the only feature that could be provenanced was medieval ridge and furrow. [AIP], UD 2/1357 (C ) SE SE TSEP TSEP Sites Diamond, S & Hopkins, G York : On-Site Archaeology, 2000, 19pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: On-Site Archaeology The excavations were undertaken in advance of the construction of a pipeline. The investigations revealed fairly limited archaeological information such as undated ditches and modern drains. The remnants of ploughed out ridge and furrow were also noted. [AIP], MO, UD 5
6 Scarborough 2/1358 (C ) TA HOPPER HILL ROAD, CROSSGATES Hoppe Hill Road, Crossgates, Seamer: Archaeological Evaluation 16pp, figs, refs The excavations were carried out on the site of the proposed new light commercial buildings. Although archaeological finds and features were discovered their interpretations were quite vague. Undated ditches and post holes were recorded, and although they contained pottery sherds, these finds were abraded and undatable. Some prehistoric flint flakes were noted although they were unstratified. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: LPR, UD 2/1359 (C ) TA LAND OFF BRIDLINGTON ROAD, HUNMANBY Land off Bridlington Road, Hunmanby, North Yorkshire. Geophysical Survey (Report No. 821) Webb, A Leeds : Archaeological Services WYAS, 2000, 13pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Services WYAS A fluxgate gradiometer survey, covering approximately 1 ha, was carried out adjacent to Hunmanby Industrial Estate. Magnetic anomalies caused by ridge and furrow ploughing and a relict field boundary were identified. Other anomalies were probably due to modern activity. No anomalies of a probable archaeological origin were identified.
