A natural channel containing well preserved peat deposits was the earliest feature recorded during the evaluation. Extensive medieval structural remains and pits were overlain by ploughsoil deposits and post-medieval structural remains and pits. A number of medieval and post-medieval property boundaries comprising ditches and ditch bank combinations were also recorded. Early modern structures were present in two of the evaluation trenches. Pottery, bone and assorted finds including preserved leather, dating to the medieval, post-medieval and early modern periods were recovered. Evidence of medieval occupation was more apparent with gullies and two post holes recorded. On the east site, a single pit that contained medieval pottery was recorded as was a scatter of medieval tile material. These included ditches in Trench 2, which although undated were assigned to the Roman period on the basis of their form. The other features in Trenches 1-3 represented pits, post holes, ditches and surfaces reflecting a short period of occupation in the 12th and 13th centuries, including the remains of a post-built structure in Trench 2. Possible garden features of 16th/17th century date were recorded in Trench 2, associated with ground raising dumps. The medieval features may form part of an early short-lived development along the east site of Beverley, which included recent discoveries at Walkergate School. Through isolated residual finds from earlier prehistoric periods were recovered, the first evidence of occupation was dated to the later Iron Age. The focus of this activity appeared to be to the north and west, and was represented by a chalk surface, large enclosure ditches, smaller field system ditches, and a probable palisade ditch. The pottery recovered from these features was mostly dated to the later Iron Age, consistent with regional traditions in this area of East Yorkshire. Large amounts of similar pottery types were recovered from within colluvial deposits, suggesting the existence of further Iron Age occupational activity within the area. A hiatus in archaeological activity was suggested at the end of the Iron Age by the separation of Iron Age and Romano-British features. Trench 1 contained a series of large intersecting pits cut in to the natural clay. They contained large amounts of pottery, bottle glass and animal bone, indicating that the had been backfilled with late 17th and 18th century domestic rubbish. Residual 14th to 16th century pottery indicated late medieval activity in the near vicinity. The pits were sealed below a series of 18th to 19th century ground raising dumps. Trench 2 contained a single linear ditch which appeared to have had its origins in the medieval period, perhaps as early as the 13th to 14th century. The ditch was then sealed below a series of ground raising dumps in to which a mid to late 19th century rubbish pit had been cut. Trench 3 contained a single linear ditch. A small Romano-British pottery assemblage, along with a tile fragment and a small amount of animal bone were recovered from the ditch. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number: 11380, MD, RO, MD

[Au(abr)] (C ) TA {74570C99-6E62-485B C34A7} Parish: Hedon Postal Code: HU12 8PW LAND AT THE OLD HALL, FLETCHERGATE, HEDON An Archaeological Evaluation on Land at the Old Hall, Fletchergate, Hedon, East Riding of Yorkshire Fraser, J Kingston Upon Hull : Humber Field Archaeology, 2006, 133pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs The site occupied an area straddling the medieval Fleet, a canalised watercourse connected to the Humber via the tidal Hedon Haven. Two trenches revealed traces of 12th to 14th century medieval timber framed buildings cut into natural clay. Associated with the earliest phase was a hearth, which may have been for smithing; a slightly later phase included a pit containing coal and possible burnt clay hearth lining with iron-based accretions. Fragments of coal and slag were found in other sampled contexts. In the phase 3 dumps were cut several brick structures representing ranges of outbuildings set around the former walled garden of the Old Hall on the Fletchergate frontage to the south. The Old Hall was built by the former Hedon Mayor Henry Waterland shortly after 1700, and two stamped bottles, one bearing his name and the date 1716, the other his initials, were found in a pit in the garden. The buildings were completely rebuilt along the similar lines in the first half of the 19th century and remains in modified form into the later 20th, when a housing development was constructed on most of the former garden site. The evaluation revealed a stratified sequence of archaeological deposits and features, the earliest of which pre-dated the 12th century. Two main phases of activity were noted across the site: Phase 1 (medieval) and Phase 2 (post-medieval to modern). Within this broad framework, a number of distinct sub-phases of activity were identified in each trench. The finds assemblage recovered during the evaluation included medieval, post-medieval and modern pottery that ranged in date from 12th to 19th century. Trench 1 identified a series of medieval dump deposits, pits, linear features and probable structural features of pre-12th to 14th century date. The medieval features were truncated by several post-medieval gullies and the remains of an 18th century brick-floored cellar. Trench 2 also contained medieval evidence as did trench 3. There was little evidence for structural activity, which may therefore have been confined to small areas near the Bridgegate frontage. The area was also covered by deep deposits of possible water-lain silts and ground raising dumps. 6 (C ) SE {1E788A9A-92B A83F-933BA6F06CF5} Parish: Huggate Postal Code: YO42 1YH LAND TO THE REAR OF THE WOLDS INN, DRIFFIELD ROAD, HUGGATE An Archaeological Evaluation on Land to the rear of the Wolds Inn, Driffield Road, Huggate, East Riding of Yorkshire Humber Field Archaeology Kingston Upon Hull : Humber Field Archaeology, 2005, 63pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed planning application for residential development on the site. The trench contained a number of archaeological features of medieval date which seemed to indicated the earthworks of the shrunken medieval village continue westward into the current development area. These features included an extant north/south boundary bank and associated wall foundation running across the eastern edge of the trench. This formed the western edge to a medieval enclosure (croft), the eastern edge of which is still visible as an extant parallel earthworks in the adjacent pasture. Towards the southern extent of the trench were the remains of what appeared to have been another chalk rubble wall foundation, sitting on a terraced area at the top of the natural slope. A substantial east-west aligned ditch had been excavated along the bottom of the slope. A number of other deposits containing medieval pottery may have represented levelling accumulations of occupation debris. The small medieval pottery assemblage recovered from the features dated the occupation to the 13th century. After the abandonment of this part of the medieval settlement, the land would have reverted to pasture, but the earthworks would have remains largely visible. Although no archaeological features were directly attributed to the Roman periods, a number of residual sherds of Roman pottery suggested earlier activity on the site. Sometime after the construction of the building that became the Wolds Inn, thought to date to the early 18th century, the earthworks to the rear were sealed below a substantial deposit of soil. From within the uppermost topsoil was recovered an interesting assemblage of late 18th to late 19th century cutlery, consisting of knives and forks, most with decorated bone handles-which were assumed to have been thrown out from the Inn when no longer needed. The earliest archaeological evidence consisted of sherds of abraded Roman pottery. Sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the subsoil of trench 1 but were not associated with archaeological features. The archaeological features encountered during the evaluation dated to the post-medieval period and later. One modern pit, possibly an engineering pit, four post-medieval pits and a post hole were located in Trench 1, whilst three small pits of 19th century date were found in Trench 2. Four modern post holes, three modern services trenches, two ditches, a gully and five pits were uncovered in Trench 3.
