Archaeological Walkover and Metal Detector surveys Buglass, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2004, 19pp, colour pls, figs, refs The purpose of the surveys was to involve the local community and to build upon data already surveyed. The walkover of the earthworks of Gates Hill Camp was not as detailed as anticipated due to the density of tree cover. The walkover survey did not reveal any additional features within the earthworks of Gates Hill Camp, but a small hollowway to the south of the camp was recorded. The metal detector survey recorded 15 finds, predominantly iron, mostly agricultural and all of postmedieval date. [Au(adp)], UD 3/1683 (E.36.M042) SD LA6 3JG ST. Topographic survey and Archaeological Watching Brief Tomson, S Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 18pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs A watching brief and topographic survey was concerned with groundworks associated with drainage works and associated civil engineering activity within two areas of relic mine working. The mines developed rapidly from the 1840's but were abandoned in Site A, within the Scheduled Monument, revealed information about a level part of the mine's drainage system. The topographic survey revealed a complex of mining and mining related features, including seven infilled shafts, the pylon bases for an aerial ropeway, a wheel pit and bob pit and the drainage level. Site B, just outside the Scheduled area, revealed that the surface deposits of the hillside were mainly composed of mining waste, and the topographic survey recorded the remains of four infilled shafts and erosion gullies. The external trenches reflected disturbed conditions. The internal trenches showed that the cobbled floor was late, possibly from the first half of the 19th century and that there was no trace of any earlier occupation level. Six of these test pits identified archaeological deposits. The significant archaeological deposits were the remains of cobble surfaces, a wall, surviving floor levels and the possible barrel vault roof of a cellar. In addition foundations possibly associated with a building earlier than the current structure were exposed. The level of post-medieval activity was more apparent as a garden wall and cobbled areas were uncovered immediately below the present ground level. A number of pits were uncovered to the most southwestern part of the site and revealed a number of dog and horse burials, probably associated with the stables and coaching station present during the 19th and 20th century. The site had been disturbed by relatively modern groundworks, but some useful archaeological observations were made. The trenches within the eastern courtyard confirmed the presence of a substantial medieval ditch, possibly a property boundary and the trench from the western courtyard into Masonic Lane exposed deposits associated with a possible former cobbled yard surface. The stripping of the eastern courtyard exposed a post-medieval well, modified to take a lead pipe and traces of a possible structure associated with it. No finds of any significance were recovered from the topsoil. Trench one revealed very dark organic inclusions, which was probably the remains of a waterlogged pond.
