Archaeological Walkover Survey Bashford, D & Croft, A Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2001, 15pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology An archaeological walkover survey was undertaken to help inform the development of a Restoration and Management Plan for the Wakefield Lodge Estate. The walkover survey identified 43 discrete archaeological sites ranging from extensive earthwork complexes of medieval/post-medieval date through to relatively modern landscape features such as relict field boundaries. Overall the survey revealed eight sites of potentially regional significance that warranted specific attention in the Management Plan and a further 18 sites of potentially local significance that warranted more generalised attention. Much of the site contained no archaeology. A small area of slag material was identified next to the foundations of a building. This suggested that iron smelting took place on the site. The presence of occupation debris mixed in with the slag suggested that the building was also a habitation. Both the slag and the building were medieval in date. [Au(abr)] 2/94 (C.34.D013) SP LAND TO THE REAR OF 11 CHAPEL ROAD, WELDON Land to the Rear of 11 Chapel Road, Weldon Ivens, R Potterspury : R. J. Ivens, 2001, 47pp, figs, tabs, refs Seven evaluation trenches were excavated on the site. The development was located at the rear of medieval burgage plot and it was thought that industrial activity had taken place in the area. Apart from property boundary ditches, no other archaeology was identified. The site therefore had a limited archaeological potential. [Au(abr)] 2/95 (C.34.A004) SP OAKLEY VALE, CORBY 1

Results of Field Artefact Collection Survey Report No.:2001/53 Watters, J Bedford : Albion Archaeology, 2001, 23pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Albion Archaeology The field artefact collection survey was part of a scheme of archaeological works aiming to establish the archaeological potential of the site. The total study area covered 70ha. The south-western part of this area (c.10ha in extent) was deemed unsuitable for artefact collection due to it being in pastoral use. A further 2ha of the study area, located to the north of Oakley Grange, had not been ploughed at the time of the survey and would need to be examined at a later date. Two main areas of archaeological interest were identified. The first was focused on a plateau towards the middle of the survey area where a scatter of flint tools, waste flakes and occasional pieces of burnt flint, all of prehistoric date, were noted. The second area was located on the western edge of the site and consisted of a dispersed scatter of medieval pottery. J. Ivens, 2001, 26pp, figs, tabs Two test pits were excavated either side of the north porch. These revealed the 15th century porch foundations, cutting through earlier burials. The suggestion was that the current nave may have incorporated a smaller earlier nave. [Au(abr)] 2/97 (C.34.A005) SP FOX COVERT, CHURCH BRAMPTON Fox Covert, Church Brampton, Northants. Archaeological Evaluation Report Report No.:120 Hillelson, D & Hall, D Baldock : The Heritage Network Ltd, 2001, 14pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: The Heritage Network Ltd In response to a planning condition placed on an extension to the Northampton County golf course, an archaeological evaluation was commissioned. Although Fox Covert was located within a known archaeological landscape, suggesting a high potential for the discovery of features and artefacts from a range of historic and prehistoric periods, the lack of chance finds from the immediate vicinity and the evidence of the fieldwork led to a strong intimation that no significant archaeology was likely to be encountered by the proposed development. [Au(abr)] East Northamptonshire 2/98 (C.34.D008) SP FORMER ALLOTMENTS SITE, LIME STREET, IRTHLINGBOROUGH Trial Excavation on Former Allotments Site, Lime Street, Irthlingborough 2

The first were 9th-11th century pits, ditches and gullies, sealed by a 13th century garden soil. Above this was a wall robbed out for a later stone building and dovecote. These were removed in the 18th century when the site was landscaped. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: EM, MD, UD 2/99 (C.34.D004) SP LAND AT HIGH STREET, THRAPSTON Land at High Street, Thrapston Dawson, M Sywell : Samuel Rose, 2001, 22pp, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: Samuel Rose Trial trenching was carried out to investigate the presence of frontage and backplot structures. A wall from a 17th century building cellar was found, along with a pit of a similar date. All other features were modern and a modern dump layer sealed the features. Archaeological Evaluation Report No.:2001/06 Edwards, R Bedford : Bedfordshire County Archaeology Service, 2001, 20pp, colour pls, figs Work undertaken by: Bedfordshire County Archaeology Service Three trenches were opened in a former late 19th century/early 20th century industrial site located in close proximity to Saxo-Norman and medieval discoveries. Only one archaeological feature was encountered, a former property boundary of unknown date. The majority of the evaluation area indicated that the area had been subject to landscaping. [Au] Archaeological periods represented: UD 2/101 (C.34.D007) TL LAND TO THE EAST OF THE PARISH HALL, MAIN STREET, HEMINGTON Land to the East of the Parish Hall, Main Street, Hemington Lloyd, R Northampton : Northamptonshire Archaeology, 2001, 12pp, figs Trial trenching was carried out on the site. Demolition layers from three earlier cottages were encountered along with post-medieval pits, post holes and a gully. The former line of the medieval road was identified along with a pit and ditch of medieval date. [Au(abr)], PM 3

4 2/102 (C.34.D003) SP SITE 3, A6 RUSHDEN-HIGHAM FERRERS BYPASS A6 Rushden-Higham Ferrers Bypass, Site 3 Hayward, S Northampton : Northamptonshire Archaeology, 2001, 14pp, figs Six trial trenches were excavated on the proposed road corridor. The excavation confirmed the presence of a Roman settlement close to the site. Substantial ditches possibly forming the boundary of the settlement were identified and a large amount of Roman finds were recovered. This all suggested that the settlement was just to the west of the proposed road route. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: RO Kettering 2/103 (C.34.A006) HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, ROTHWELL Archaeological Trial Trenching At Holy Trinity Church, Rothwell, Northants Report No.:2001/174 Jones, S Leicester : University of Leicester Archaeological Services, 2001, 25pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: University of Leicester Archaeological Services Archaeological trial trenching was carried out in advance of proposed drainage works on the south side of Holy Trinity Church. A series of test pits were excavated to determine the location of existing drain runs and to characterise any archaeological deposits, which may be affected by the proposed works. Survival of evidence relating to the former plan of the south side of the church demolished in 1673 included the identification of a possible mortar floor surface, a short section of masonry plus possible wall lines visible in the form of robber trenches backfilled with rubble deposits. Finds included several pieces of medieval pottery and floor tile. Unstratified human bones, also unearthed, were reburied following completion of the trial trenching. 5 SHACKS BARN, SILVERSTONE A43 Towcester to M40 Dualled Project Soil Disposal and Landscaping Areas, Shacks Barn, Silverstone Carlyle-Lancaster, S Northampton : Northamptonshire Archaeology, 2001, 35pp, figs, tabs The evaluation identified a small Iron Age enclosure, and a dispersed Roman agricultural settlement. Ditches and gullies formed a Roman field system across the site. Medieval ridge and furrow was also recorded. Two cuts were recorded but no dateable material recorded. The excavation confirmed the presence of several phases of use of the graveyard. The burials dated from the 16th century right through to the late 19th century. The iron rails had been removed but the stone makeup of the trackbed was identified. On the south west side there was a bank and ditch and a ditch on the north east side. A possible stone culvert for a stream was also exposed. [Au(adp)] 5

Ivens, 2001, 21pp, figs Trial trenching was carried out on the proposed development site. Much of the site was terraced but a possible Roman ditch, a post-medieval pit and evidence of medieval ploughing were observed. A large amount of Roman and Saxo-Norman finds were recovered, suggesting the possible presence of a settlement near the site.
