2 modern structure. The watching brief involved both below ground observations (Link Building) and structural observations of the medieval timber framing of Monks Barn, which was extensively altered in the early 19th century by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. The area of the Link Building was found to have been extensively disturbed by the previous 1970s structure and service trenches. Examination of the interior of Monks Barn revealed some previously unrecorded details of Wyatville's alterations, but generally confirmed the accuracy of the existing descriptions of the structure. The Ford Garage, High Street, Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire Hawkins, D London : CgMs Consulting, 2001, 39pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: CgMs Consulting An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during residential development of the site. Despite a very thorough search of the foundations trenches only one area of intact stratigraphy was identified on the extreme north-east quarter of the site where a garden soil was present. Elsewhere, the natural deposits on the site were overlain by modern concrete or had been truncated and were overlain by redeposited, disturbed layers. The only finds were of late 18th and 19th century date. No significant archaeological remains were identified on the site and it was concluded that the combination of terracing into the natural hill slope to form a level platform for previous buildings and construction of the former garage had destroyed the sites archaeological potential. Barn 1 was a mid-19th century industrial threshing barn, and Barn 2, although originally considered to be 18th century in date, proved to be of 16th century origin. Monitoring of the groundworks demonstrated that the farmyard had been well used and regularly maintained during the post-medieval period and more recently, but no evidence for earlier activity was noted. The site lay within the historic core of the town of Hertford, adjacent to the River Lea, but probably outside the limits of the medieval town. The archaeological monitoring and recording revealed no archaeological features or finds to be present. The site seemed to have been reclaimed from land on the margins of the river at a late date (probably in the 19th century). 5 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken across the redevelopment site which was set within lightly wooded Grade II registered parkland. The parkland was of some antiquity and was thought to have been in existence since at least the late 17th century when it surrounded the first manor house, Goldings, that lay some 200m to the south-east of the site. The parkland was first mapped on a deed plan of The map showed a building in the area of the redevelopment and also some zig-zag lines immediately to the south-east of the building - the lines were now interpreted as being representative of woodland paths on the hill slope below the building. The 17th century Goldings manor house lay some 200m north-west of the River Beane and that building was demolished in the later 19th century when it was replaced by the present manor house, again called Goldings. The new manor house was located further away from the river and was completed in It was still standing and was some 50m north-east of the redevelopment site. The watching brief was carried out in two areas. Area 1 proved to be the main area of archaeological interest and comprised a building contractor's excavation measuring some 25m south-west to north-east by some 35m north-west to south east and this was located over the building mapped in The excavation contained the remains of the mapped building that proved to be a brick-built historic garden feature believed to have been built in the later 18th century and constructed as a mock-classical temple. The contractor's excavation in Area 1 was for the foundations for a new building that was to be mainly sunk into the ground, with a view to the south-east, from the hill slope into which the building was to be set. As the formation level for the new building was some 1.75m below the base of the 18th century building it was not possible to preserve the historic feature which was recorded during the archaeological watching brief. The new building constructed in Area 1 was a garage/pavilion ancillary to a nearby standing building, a large Grade II Listed chapel built in AD 1923 that was being converted into residential use as part of the same redevelopment. The chapel was built by the Dr Barnado's organisation, following their purchase of Goldings manor in 1921 in order to house a school for older boys. The school closed in Area 2 comprised the limited excavations by the building contractor around the outside of the standing chapel. The excavations were dug by the building contractor to facilitate refurbishment works on the upper foundations of the standing building. 6 of the farm buildings, and to monitor the groundworks for the development. The present farmstead was built in c.1880 to replace an earlier farm that had been destroyed by a fire in The plan of the buildings was a development of the model farms that were being constructed from the late 18th century onwards. No significant archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the fieldwork phase. It appeared that the farmyards were regularly maintained and this may well have removed all evidence of earlier activity on the site. One redeposited chalk layer was recorded in the section of the manhole at the southern side of Farmyard 2. This may have represented the remains of a former yard surface. 8 Report No. : 813 Gibson, A & Prosser, L Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2001, 84pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs Historic building recording and archaeological observation and recording was undertaken in advance of conversions to the old brewhouse. Architectural and construction details placed the brew house in the latter half of the 16th century, though substantial repairs were conducted during the 18th or early 19th century. The assessment supported earlier suggestions that the building comprised the partially truncated remains of a domestic structure. The stable block substantially preserved a modest brick built structure of the latter half of the 19th century, with a few minor alterations. Excavations for new footings revealed the edges of former yards and garden soil. No other archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted. Archaeological Monitoring and Recording Report No. : 962 Gardner, R V & Boyer Hertford : Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust, 2001, 11pp, figs, tabs, refs Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the construction of a large yoga gazebo. Observation of a number of foundation pads revealed the presence of post-roman peat deposits and alluvium in the southern part of the site, associated with the river Lea to the south. No archaeological features were recorded on the site. Sparse residual pottery sherds of Romano-British date were recorded from the peat deposits, indicative of activity in the general area. The latter was noteworthy, given that only small-scale Romano-British remains were known from the area of the later town of Hertford. 9 A Report on an Evaluation and Excavation at Tyttenhanger Quarry West Lightfoot, M Milton Keynes : Archaeological Services & Consultancy Ltd, 2001, 19pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs An archaeological excavation was undertaken at Tyttenhanger quarry in advance of gravel extraction and associated groundworks. 173 flint objects were three-dimensionally recorded, and many more unstratified flints were recovered. The finds were predominantly blades, flakes, cores and core fragments, with some retouched forms. Typologically these almost certainly dated from the Mesolithic period, though it was possible that some pieces represented later Neolithic or Bronze Age activity. No independent dating was available. The new footings were excavated under supervision and a number of possible post holes and two possible ditches were recorded. Finds recovered from the ditches dated them to the Roman period and, although no artefacts were recovered from the post holes, it seemed likely that they were also Roman in date. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM, RO, UD 3/384 (E.26.A022) TL QUEEN STREET, HITCHIN Assessment of an Archaeological Excavation at 33 Queen Street, Hitching, Hertfordshire Stirk, D London : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2001, 66pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd An archaeological evaluation and subsequent open area excavation was carried out within the footing of the proposed building. The site revealed Roman, later Saxon and medieval archaeological activity. The evaluation comprised four trenches. The features consisted mostly of pits, post holes and ditches, a number of which contained Roman pottery. The nature of the proposed development meant that a mitigation strategy of preservation by record was adopted. One L-shaped area within the footing of the proposed building was stripped of topsoil and homogenous subsoils. It measured approximately 56m east-west by 23m north-south. A significant number of archaeological features were recorded during the excavation phases, which were consistent with the results of the evaluation. Some Roman activity was indicated by finds and a small number of features, however, the main period of activity was from the late middle Saxon to early medieval periods. During this time a substantial settlement including a variety of building types and a line of defences occupied the site. The defences, including a palisade, two ditches and a gate, were removed over time, and the space covered with buildings. In the early medieval period the alignments changed and density of occupation decreased, until the 13th or possibly 14th century, when the site reverted to agricultural land. Most of the site appeared to remain undeveloped during much of the post-medieval period until perhaps the 18th century. [Au(abr)] 9

An Archaeological Post-Excavation Assessment and Updated Project Design Davis, S London : Museum of London Archaeology Service, 2001, 52pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Museum of London Archaeology Service An evaluation and excavation was required prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site which comprised the demolition of existing buildings and the erection of four two and three bedroom terraced houses and 16 two and three bedrooms dwellings off Queen Street. The majority of the south-western part of the site had been truncated during the construction of the 19th century buildings which cut into the natural slope, removing archaeological deposits in this area. The evaluation and consequent archaeological excavation recorded a range of features that demonstrated sporadic occupation on the site from the early-middle Saxon period through to the layer post-medieval periods. The earliest features recorded on the site were cut into natural deposits and consisted of six east-west aligned inhumations. Radiocarbon dating indicated that the remains dated to the early Saxon period. A number of medieval plough marks were recorded which sealed the burials at the west end of the site. Finally a thick layer of garden soil sealed the entire area. The garden soil deposit contained a number of features that one may have been associated with a landscaped garden, including a number of plant bowls, steps and pathways. Observation and Recording Report Report No. : 156 Ashworth, H Baldock : The Heritage Network Ltd, 2001, 38pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs As the result of an archaeological condition on the planning permission for the redevelopment of the former farm buildings the Heritage Network was commissioned to provide a photographic record of the farm buildings, and to monitor the groundworks for the development. Evidence for medieval occupation was known in the vicinity of the site, and the county SMR indicated human activity in the area from the Neolithic onwards. A total of eight cut features were recorded in the course of the fieldwork. Two of these appeared to be natural in origin, and three predated Barns A and B but were otherwise undated. A linear feature equated to a boundary shown on the early OS maps, and two rubbish pits were late post-medieval or Victorian in date. Wall foundations and chalk surfaces recorded in the farm courtyard were all likely to have been associated with farm activity since the mid 19th century. One rim sherd of Romano-British date, three sherds of Saxo-Norman date and two sherds of late medieval or early post-medieval date were collected from underpin pits for Barns A and B, on the western and southern sides of the farmyard. These sherds all came from a layer which may have been imported to the present site in the mid-19th century as part of the barn foundations. Archaeological Investigations and Watching Brief Bennell, M & Stump, D Oxford : Cluttons, 2001, 47pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Cluttons Archaeological investigations and a watching brief were carried out along the route of the water pipeline. The archaeological fieldwork was in three phases: geophysical survey to clarify aerial photographic data and earthworks, possibly relating to SAM 20615; excavation before construction of areas of potential in the vicinity of SAM 27908; and monitoring of the pipeline during construction. The archaeological fieldwork produced evidence for a Late Iron Age ditch; Roman period features thought to be associated with the known Roman villa at Radwell (SM 27908); and a group of three subcircular or oval structural features of unknown function and probable medieval date. The oval features were east of linear earthworks with associated ditches where fragments of prehistoric pottery, Bronze Age or Neolithic in date, were recovered. Ditches and a section of trackway, thought to be of medieval origin, were also uncovered in the environs of the Roman villa. In addition, an early post-medieval ditch running beside the A1(M) road was excavated and a probable post-medieval or modern burnt feature, interpreted as a fire-pit, was recorded. Near the village of Norton, at the south of the route, scatters of medieval pottery were recovered. [Au(abr)] Stevenage 3/401 (E.26.A063) TL HIGH STREET, STEVENAGE 104 High Street, Stevenage, Herts. A basic photographic survey of the areas of works was also completed in advance of the refurbishment, internal re-flooring and external paving of the tower. The tower of St Mary's dated from c.1630, though the nave and aisles of the church were comprehensively rebuilt in the early and later 19th century. It was likely that the present church closely followed the alignment and form of its medieval precursor, although the extent of this had not been archaeologically proven. The evaluation revealed re-deposited burial soil to the west of the tower, while excavations below the floor within the tower revealed a rubble levelling deposit for the existing flagstone floor. No archaeological features were revealed or finds recovered. In February 2001, works commenced on the refurbishment of the tower. The cupboards and clock weight mechanism beneath the tower ladder were removed and the floor lowered by approximately 38cm. This comprised mainly brick and stone demolition rubble in a sandy matrix with one or two fragments of human bone. Two large 17th century ledger stones were exposed beneath the cupboard area, which were photographed before removal. An area of the original walling in the north-west corner was also uncovered, revealed lime-washed ashlar stonework to a height of c.2.5m. [Au(abr)] 16
