3 An excavation was carried out on the site. Residual prehistoric flints, some of which could be dated to the Mesolithic period, were found along with one sherd of Iron Age pottery. Residual medieval pottery was also recovered from the site. Two ditch features, which may have been part of a post-medieval field system, were also identified. Possible prehistoric features including stake holes and possible linear features were uncovered. Worked and burnt flints were recovered. Medieval and post-medieval agricultural activity was found in the form of stake holes, post holes and possible structures. A layer of prehistoric/roman date was identified, along with a Saxon layer and pits. 12 medieval pits were also identified along with a postmedieval wall and pits. Two Middle Saxon pits were exposed containing mammal bones, oyster shells, daub and charcoal. Prehistoric finds were recovered comprising of a flint tool, two flint flakes and burnt flints. A feature of uncertain date was identified; this may have been Roman or be an 18th century garden feature. Garden soil deposits were also noted. 7 3/1075 (E.80.H018) SU KANE'S HILL CARAVAN SITE Watching Brief at Kane's Hill Caravan Site, Bitley Road Garner, M Southampton : Southampton City Council Archaeology Unit, 2002, 8pp, figs A watching brief was carried out on the site. No archaeological features or deposits were observed, except for burnt flints. Archaeological periods represented: UD 3/1076 (E.80.H003) SU KINGSLAND SQUARE Report on the Archaeological Wwatching Brief and Excavation in Kingsland Square Garner, M Southampton : Southampton City Council Archaeology Unit, 2002, 32pp, figs, tabs A watching brief with option to excavate was carried out on fourteen trenches. Prehistoric features and deposits were found comprising of pits and layers containing flint and pottery. Middle Saxon features were present in four trenches and included stake holes, post holes, a pit and features of uncertain function. The Middle Saxon features contained daub, pottery, mammal bones, oyster shells and charcoal. Evidence for working bone and antler, textile production and metalworking was also found. Archaeological periods represented: EM, PR 3/1077 (E.80.H004) SU NORTHAM COMUNITY CENTRE Northam Community Centre (d=former Northam Primary School), Peel Street, Northam Smith, M Southampton : Southampton City Council Archaeology Unit, 2002, 21pp, colour pls, figs A watching brief and building record was carried out on the site. No evidence for human activity that pre-dated the construction of the school in 1889 was found. The building survey found the school to be a well-preserved example of a late 19th century municipal infant school. Archaeological periods represented: PM 3/1078 (E.80.H002) SU QUAYSIDE ROAD An Archaeological Watching Brief at Quayside Road Whitehead, B Southampton : Southern Archaeological Services, 2002, 37pp, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: Southern Archaeological Services A watching brief was maintained on groundworks at the site. Roman finds were recovered from a number of layers and features, including a very large post hole. A large amount of unstratified Roman material was also recovered from the topsoil. Part of the course of a limestone flint wall, probably the perimeter wall of the Roman settlement was also observed. 7

Modern dump layers and construction trench were recorded, no finds were recovered. A school air raid shelter was recorded prior to demolition. Medieval foundations were uncovered along with 19th century brick foundations, a grave with an inscribed date of 1839 and construction layers of the 19th century floor.
