Two phases of activity were identified, the earliest phase consisted of a post hole, ditch, gully and ring ditch of an Iron Age date. A number of very shallow truncated features were identified. In the main the features were linear features and were possibly land drains. A prehistoric pit was identified and was thought to be associated with the ditches. Some of the linear features also contained Roman finds, suggesting the site was used for agriculture from the late prehistoric to the Romano-British period. A Neolithic ditch was revealed along with a series of pits and post holes of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age date. An enclosure ditch of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age date encircling gullies and ring ditches was identified with an associated field system. A large posted enclosure and posted structure of possible Middle Bronze Age date was also identified. Ditches and post holes related to post-medieval agriculture were present in 6 of the trenches, as well as what may once have been a trackway. It was concluded that where ploughing has not truncated the natural substrata, archaeological remains were unlikely to be present. A substantial cellar wall and floor associated with Chester House, a building known to have occupied the site in the 19th century was also revealed. A fine Roman carved bone clasp-knife handle was found in a ditch. The deposits were sealed by layers of rubble associated with the demolition of 19th century buildings. A defensive/enclosure ditch was identified, containing daub, charcoal, flint and a flint flake. This feature was interpreted as prehistoric. The remains of medieval wall were also identified. The centre of the valley was identified as having been truncated by modern activity. Some were associated with known buildings shown on historic plans of the site. Foundation walls of the Grove were discovered, and it was thought that any earlier buildings would have been truncated by the construction of the Grove. Archaeological investigation Coleman, L Cirencester : Cotswold Archaeological Trust, 2002, 32pp, figs, tabs, refs The evaluation confirmed that anomalies identified by an earlier geophysical survey were consistent with Romano-British rural settlement, a specially in the north-eastern part of the study area. This evidence primarily comprised ditches possibly relating to Late Iron Age roundhouses, and a rectilinear system of enclosures dating to the Romano-British period. Ditches and pits relating to others of the 17

18 above were found across the area, although less densely located. A zone of high archaeolgical potential was declared in the north-eastern area. Twenty four trenches were excavated identifying a stone drain, four walls, three possible walls, four limestone surfaces, and a limestone column base. All of the features may well be part of the medieval Abbey ancillary complex. However two of the trenches were located in an area displaying extant ridge and furrow, whilst two more displyed indications of denuded ridge and furrow in the upper surface of natural clay at their bases.
