WEST SUSSEX Arun 3/1146 (E ) SU 'GREENFIELDS', MIDDLETON-ON-SEA 'Greenfields', Middleton-on-Sea, West Sussex. Archaeological Excavation Saunders, M J Reading : Thames Valley Archaeological Services, 2000, 16pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Thames Valley Archaeological Services Two Roman features were discovered, both of late 1st to 2nd century date; a substantial ditch, which was probably part of a Roman field system, and a pit. Pottery from these features included both locally manufactured items and imports, notably Central Gaulish samian. One piece of samian had a potter's stamp; noteworthy as this particular potter's mark was rarely found. This field system may have been the same as that examined to the north-east at Nalgo Lodge. Also found was a small gully, likely to have been medieval, and four other features that remained undated. One of these, a pit, contained a dump of oyster shell and may also have been medieval. Other finds from the site included fired clay, worked and burnt flint, and, more interestingly, a small fragment of quernstone and two pieces of tegula, which may have hinted at occupation in the vicinity. All the clay pipes were of later 18thto mid 19th-century date. A copper George II ( ) half penny was also recovered. In addition to the post-medieval finds, 20 sherds of medieval pottery were also recovered.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 1

No significant archaeological features, finds or deposits were encountered.[aip] 3/1151 (E ) SU WHYKE ROAD, CHICHESTER 49 Whyke Road, Whyke, Chichester, West Sussex: Archaeological Watching Brief Turner, D W T Chichester : D W T Turner, 2000, 10pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: D W T Turner During the course of the watching brief it was concluded that the development area was once part of a domestic occupation site certainly since the 18th century, and probably since the 15th century. It was clear from the historic record that at least one cottage had been demolished on the tenement, there was no siginficant evidence of destruction material of any period.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM 3/1152 (E ) SU NORTH PALLANT, CHICHESTER Archaeological Monitoring at the site of 6 North Pallant, Chichester, West Sussex Hunter, P & Pine, C West Wittering : Development Archaeology Services, 2000, 7pp, figs, refs During the course of the watching brief no significant archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered.[aip] 3/1153 (E ) TQ DOWNSVIEW DAIRY FARM, NEAR BIGNOR Downsview Dairy Farm, West Sussex: Archaeological Watching Brief Archaeology South-East Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 3pp, figs 2
During the course of the watching brief no archaeological remains were recovered. The Roman road that was assumed to run through the site, by a projected line from its surviving remains, was not observed in any of the trenches. This may have been destroyed by the foundations of the previous building upon the site, or it may have run straight from the remains that survived diverting en route, therefore the groundworks not being placed in its path.[au(abr)] 3/1154 (E ) SZ ETON DRIVE, EAST WITTERING Archaeological Watching Brief of Land at Eton Drive, East Wittering, West Sussex Parsons, G Brentford : Parsons Archaeology, 2000, 14pp, colour pls, figs Work undertaken by: Parsons Archaeology During the course of the watching brief no archaeological features were recorded. Artefacts recovered from the topsoil were all of 19th century date and included fragments of roof tile and transfer printed wares; three prehistoric lithics including 2 waste flakes and a crude scraper.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PR, PM 3/1155 (E ) SU ST GILES CHURCH, GRAFFHAM Summary Statement of Archaeological Watching Brief at St Giles Church, Graffham, West Sussex (Doc. no.1205) Archaeology South-East Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 3pp, figs During the watching brief two burials were observed within Soakaway Trench 1. The state of the bone along with the presence of the well preserved tinned coffin decoration suggested that the burials were probably no older than 150 years. No archaeological deposits of a greater age than the burials were encountered.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 3/1156 (E ) SU ST ROACHES' HILL, SINGLETON Archaeological Monitoring at the Site of a New Cabin and Mast on St. Roches' Hill, Singleton, Nr. Chichester, West Sussex Hunter, P & Pine, C West Wittering : Development Archaeology Services, 2000, 9pp, figs, refs The development was centered at the north west corner of an Iron Age hill fort known as The Trundle. The area is archaeologically rich, both with prehistoric features (a Neolithic causewayed enclosure and an Iron Age hill fort) and historic features (St. Roche's Chapel and a windmill). However, during the course of the watching brief no archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered.[au(abr)] 3/1157 (E ) SU THE CRICKET NETS, PRIORY PARK, CHICHESTER Archaeological Monitoring at the Site of The Cricket Nets, Priory Park, Chichester, West Sussex Hunter, P & Pine, C West Wittering : Development Archaeology Services, 2000, 10pp, figs, refs 3
During the course of the watching brief concentrations of oysters and a patch of mortar rich clay silt were recorded, as well as several fragments of mortar and greensand. No certain interpretations were made regarding the nature of the features identified, nor the provenance of the mortar/greensand fragments due to the limited nature of the development.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: RO 3/1158 (E ) SU THE FORMER BUS GARAGE BETWEEN LAMBERTS LANE AND CAPRON HOUSE, MIDHURST An Archaeological Watching Brief and Evaluation of The Former Bus Garage between Lamberts Lane and Capron House, North Street, Midhurst, West Sussex (Doc. no.1194) Griffin, N Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 12pp, figs, refs During the course of the watching brief no archaeological features or deposits were observed and there was evidence for modern truncation of both the overlying deposits and natural geology.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 3/1159 (E ) SU WESTFIELD Archaeological Monitoring Undertaken at Westfield, Penwarden, Way, Bosham, West Sussex Development Archaeological Services West Wittering : Development Archaeology Services, 2000, 3pp, figs, refs During the course of the watching brief no archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered.[aip] Crawley 3/1160 (E ) TQ WOOLBOROUGH ROAD, NORTHGATE An Archaeological Watching Brief at No. 7 Woodborough Road, Northgate, Crawley, West Sussex (Doc no.1227) James, R Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 12pp, figs, tabs, refs A watching brief was maintained during groundworks for a new sheltered housing development. During the course of the watching brief a double ditch was observed. No other features or artefacts of archaeological interset were recorded.[au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MD 4
Horsham 3/1161 (E ) TQ HORSHAM LIBRARY An Archaeological Watching Brief at Horsham Library, Lower Tanbridge Way, Horsham, West Sussex (Doc.no.1291) James, R Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 10pp, figs, tabs A watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for a new surgery. No archaeological features or artefacts of archaeological significance were observed. No trace of any buildings fronting onto Worthing Road were found.[au] 3/1162 (E ) TQ LINK FARM, PULBOROUGH An Archaeological Watching Brief at Link Farm, Pulborough, West Sussex Currie, C K Eastleigh : CKC Archaeology, 2000, 27pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: CKC Archaeology The watching brief produced plentiful evidence of Roman activity in the area. Although scatters of Roman pottery appeared all over the site, there was a definite concentration of features and finds along the south side of the proposed new barn. Seven test pits were dug along this line. These produced four features, three of them datable to the Roman period. Elsewhere on this line concentrations of Roman pottery and tile were found. Forms seemed to be mainly bowls/dishes and jars, with a small percentage ornamented with inscribed markings. The date range for the features recovered seemed to suggest a relatively close date range of between AD Only one other feature was found during groundworks on the house and garage. This was a largish pit containing moderately large quantities of pottery. Again local grey sandy wares predominated, although four sherds of Samian ware, including a platter sherd, were also found here. The date for this pottery roughly coincided with that for features found elsewhere, with a slightly wider range of AD These date ranges possibly suggested a more precise period of activity in the areas explored on this occasion than elsewhere on the site. Acid sands seemed to have destroyed most other artefacts. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: RO, UD Mid Sussex 3/1163 (E ) TQ ST GILE'S SCHOOL, HORSTED KEYNES An Archaeological Watching Brief at St Giles School, Horsted Keynes, West Sussex (Doc. no.1201) Griffin, N Ditchling : Archaeology South-East, 2000, 21pp, figs, refs During the course of the watching brief a single sherd of 13th to 14th-century pottery was recovered from a subsoil deposit, which in places was found to rest above a possible clay floor level. In addition evidence of post-medieval iron working activity near the site was located. No structural archaeological features were observed.[au] Archaeological periods represented: PM 5
