1 Year in Review 2018 President s Message - Rick Clark, Operations Manager, GT USA December Inside this issue: Officers 2 Governors Board 4 Partners 5 Holiday Party 6 November Luncheon 7 October Luncheon 8 HELM Fall Field Trip 9 September Luncheon 10 August Luncheon 11 July Fireworks Dinner 12 June Luncheon 13 KBB Clean Ups 14 Maritime Day 15 May Luncheon 16 ShrimpFeast 17 HELM Spring Field Trip 18 It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral this past year. This is the second club that I have served in this position for, having previously been President in Jacksonville. While both clubs are great organizations which serve their port communities well, I have to say that the sense of community and camaraderie I have found here at Port Canaveral is second to none. I want to especially thank my fellow Board members for the support during this year, especially when I found myself traveling quite a bit for business. My focus this past year has been on improving a few areas of our already wellrun organization, specifically finding the way forward on a new web presence for the club and finding ways to increase our community support. I am happy to report that we have a new website up and running that is a micro-site connected to the International Propeller Club web site. Use of this site is a benefit from the portion of our membership dues paid to International each year and is no cost to the club beyond those dues. We will be sending the link out to our members and we ask for feedback going forward on the new site. This year we have been able to increase our support for the Rockledge High School HELM Maritime Studies program, both financially and with more support from our Education Committee. We thank all our members for supporting this program and especially those who give of their time and talents. Looking ahead to the coming year we plan to increase the number of scholarships we give to graduating High School seniors going on to study in maritime related post-secondary fields. Our club is putting in to action our belief in supporting maritime industry education and in mentoring and developing the next generation of maritime workers. Thank you for being members of this club and please remember to renew your membership for Consider inviting a colleague or friend in the industry or interested in supporting the port community, to join us as well. As I hand the baton off to incoming President Bryan Bobbitt, I know that the club is in good hands for the future and that he and the Board can count on your continued support. I wish all of you a very Blessed Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! March Luncheon 19 February Luncheon 20 January Luncheon 21

22 Page 22 SALTY FUN FACTS QUEEN WHO? By Earl McMillin In 1840, Samuel Cunard began his historic effort to make crossing the Atlantic bearable if not pleasurable, with Britannia, the brainchild of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Britannia was the first in a long line of Cunard ships such as Mauretania and Lusitania, whose names ended in ia. In the 1930 s Cunard laid plans for a super-liner that the company planned on naming Queen Victoria. British protocol required that to name a ship after any British monarch, permission to do so had to be obtained from the reigning sovereign. At an audience before King George V and Queen Mary, the Managing Director of Cunard gave a courtly bow and said, Your Majesty, Cunard Steamship wishes to name its latest ship, the largest and fastest ever to sail transatlantic, after one of Britain s most illustrious queens. Before the man from Cunard could say Queen Victoria, King George exclaimed to his wife, Do you hear that, darling, Cunard wants to name its newest ship after you! That is the legend of how the ia tradition ended and the Queen Mary got her name. This may not be a Salty Fact, but it is a Salty Fun Fact.

25 WHO WE ARE Propeller Club of Port Canaveral PO Box 501 Cape Canaveral, FL Thank you to all who provided photos for this Newsletter: Canaveral Port Authority, Rich Grimison, Dennis Huff, Sarah Hardy, Lori Robinson We are on the web! We are a local chapter of the International Propeller Club of the United States and we support Port Canaveral and area businesses, the maritime industry, the U.S. Merchant Marine, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Armed Forces, especially our local units in the port community. One of the club's most important functions is to foster relationship-building and facilitate communication among Port Canaveral stakeholders and area business owners and managers. We do this by hosting monthly luncheons featuring guest speakers covering topics of interest including updates on the various projects being developed in the Port; hosting forums highlighting candidates for the Port Commission and other local elected positions; and presenting special events during the year to include our annual ShrimpFeast fundraiser; the Fireworks at the Port dinner in July and our Holiday Party each December. We also provide opportunities to give back to the community through support of several non-pro it organizations and scholarships for High School graduates pursuing maritimerelated college or career training. We believe that in this day and age where so much communication is done electronically, it is more important than ever to enjoy a few moments of personal conversation and "face time" with our fellow port community members at our events. Propeller Club Port Canaveral is on Facebook!! Come and like us to join the conversation! /
