Activities supporting those goals are fly-ins, fly-outs, biennial air tours and contributions to the Oregon Aviation Historical Society. The only requirement for membership is an interest in supporting the goals of the Club. I was unable to make it to the April meeting, but I heard from a few different folks that Bev Clark s presentation on Dorothy Hester was a good one. I also heard that meeting at the Salem FBO worked out well so we will try to have some more meetings there in the future. I am eagerly looking forward to our annual meeting in July. As always, we will meet at the history center in Cottage Grove. Our presenter will be Phil Brown. He and Dana McCullough (daughter of Swede Ralston) are writing a book on the history of the Hillsboro Airport. They have put together a presentation with many photographs that I think you will find fascinating. Swede Ralston going through the Tillamook blimp hangar We will have lunch at 12:00 followed by the meeting at 1:00. Lunch will be a catered taco and enchilada bar. Rice, beans, salad as well as drinks and desert are included. The cost is $ July, of odd numbered years, is historically when we vote in officers for the next biennium. As of this writing we have vacancies for the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary and newsletter/webmaster. Marilyn Husser has done a superb job putting together our newsletter for years but she needs to take a well earned break. Marilyn also handles membership duties. Last month the board met to discuss the vacancies as well as the fact that membership numbers have been in decline for awhile now. We have also seen a decline in the number of members who attend meetings. Air Tour participation has been down the last few years as well. We discussed a number of ideas about how to increase participation and membership. I think one idea that has a lot of merit is to get more information about the club and our activities out there on social media. I have talked to a few club members about this but no one has yet volunteered to tackle this. Are you interested? 1

2 I know that what binds us all together is our love of old airplanes. For me though, my airplane is not enough. I really like interacting with other antique and classic enthusiasts. I value tremendously the friendships that I have made through our club. It would seem though that we need some new energy. What would you like to see from our club? Do you have ideas that haven t been heard? Are you willing to take a leadership role? I would like to hear from any club member who would like to serve on the board or who has ideas about the future of our club. Feel free to call or me. Museum) FLY-OUT or AIR TOUR??? by Marilyn Husser Members of OACAC have been organizing Air Tours every even numbered year since 1984; creating great memories and making new friends along the way. In 2007, we began doing Fly-Outs on the odd numbered years. The Fly-Outs were generally on weekends so that working families could be involved. Those were also successful and a lot of fun for all who attended. In 2015, no one stepped up to organize a Fly-Out, so we decided as a club we should support the efforts of others who were hosting Fly-Ins around the state. PRESENTER PHIL BROWN (Editor s note) Phil Brown will be giving a presentation about the history of the Hillsboro Airport, based upon the research that he and Dana McCullough have done for the Hillsboro Airport History Project. Phil worked at the Hillsboro Airport on and off for 40 years and witnessed many changes during that time. Dana is a third generation pilot and her father was Swede Ralston, who established Aero Air on the Hillsboro Airport. In 2007, after Swede passed away, Dana began her research on the history of the Hillsboro Airport. We are all interested in attending Fly-Ins and Fly-Outs, but no one is stepping forward to do the organizing, so we will attend the various Fly-Ins around the state again this year. The three suggested by the OACAC Advisory Board are: Wings Over Willamette in Independence,

3 because it is being held the weekend before the solar eclipse and Independence is directly in the path of totality on the 21st, Scappoose (same weekend) and Airshow of the Cascades in Madras. 6 RAFFLE QUILT (Converge in The Gorge) The Oregon Pines Chapter of the 99s created and stitched this beautiful quilt incorporating scenes from the Columbia River Gorge and real pictures of airplanes flying over Oregon. Some of them you ll recognize from the OACAC Oregon Air Tours. The raffle tickets are $5 each and only 800 tickets will be sold. The drawing will be September 16th at the Northwest Section Ninety-Nines Meeting in Troutdale. You do not need to be present to win. Receipts go toward the education and support of women in aviation. 7 April 15, 2017 Meeting Minutes The April OACAC meeting was held at the Salem Air Center, this is the FBO at McNary Field in Salem. The meeting was called to order by Marilyn Husser due to the absence of President Mark Baxter and Vice President Andy Harris. Thirteen members attended the meeting. Treasurers Report: January Meeting Balance : $3, Income: $ Expenses: $ April Balance: $ Membership: 78, of these, 3 are advertisers Officers for the year were discussed. Mark Baxter has completed his two year term as President and we are hoping Andy Harris will step up from Vice President to President. Bev Clark has agreed to continue as Treasurer. Debra Harris will be contacted about continuing as Secretary. Marilyn Husser will continue as Newsletter Editor. Directors continuing and new Directors will be discussed. Bottom line, we need volunteers for Vice President and Directors. Please think about accepting one of the open jobs as officers. We do need people willing to make a long term commitment to their office for the necessary continuity of the club. More on officers later. The meeting was adjourned at 1:25, it was a brief meeting to accommodate the program and discussions. Tim Talen gave an update on the restoration being done by the crew at the OAHS. Our club Treasurer, Bev Clark presented the program about Dorothy Hester, Oregon s own famous aerobatic pilot. As a teenager, she learned to fly at the Tex Rankin School of Flying. Soon she and Tex Rankin were traveling the country to perform in the Great Lakes biplane that is now being restored at the History Center in Cottage Grove. Among her accomplishments, Dorothy set records for continuous outside loops and inverted snap rolls. WHERE WERE WE? The photo in the previous issue was taken as we were setting up for right traffic 33 at KSPB (Scappoose), on the 2016 Oregon Air Tour.
