1 Spring 2013 Newsletter President s Message Spring is in the air with baseball starting, March Madness underway, and the weather is showing signs of warm temperatures and clearing skies. This year s SFTE chapter is off to a good start. Here is a summary of what has recently happened and activities planned for the future. Notice: We are adding another incentive for coming to the dinner meetings. The chapter bought a few bottles of wine from the Airfield Winery event which will be used as a free door prize for future dinner meetings. Just another good reason to participate. STEM Outreach - Experience Flight Test Version 2 SFTE/SETP hosted the second Experience Flight Test as a way to engage students to STEM studies. The Society of Flight Test Engineers collaborated with SETP and joined forces on February 18 th to expose local students to Boeing Test and Evaluation (BT&E). Students from the UofW Aero department were immersed in multiple disciplines relating to flight test. The day started with an historical overview of Boeing flight test and the role of the flight test engineer and test pilot. Later in the day students participated in a test flight data play back and analyzed parameters from various engineering disciplines in the Telemetry Room. The calibration lab and Integrated Test Vehicle (ITV) were particularly interesting. Students witnessed an actual test with the flight control surfaces moving in response to simulator inputs. In the Cal lab, students witnessed how analog measurements recorded during flight are calibrated to high accuracies. The highlight of the day was the 787 Research Flight Simulator where students got behind the wheel to experience the test pilot s perspective. After a lunch of pizza and cookies, the day wrapped up with a visit to the infamous Hangar 1 where students got up close and personal with the chase plane inventory and other test support aircraft. We will be planning future EFT events on a yearly basis as part of our STEM outreach. Hangar Talk and Wine Tasting at Airfield Estates On February 23 rd the Northwest sections of SFTE/SETP sponsored Hangar Talk & Wine Tasting at Airfield Estates in Woodinville. Light appetizers and wine tastings were provided along with a living history group of folks who modeled WWII uniforms and shared the stories behind the people who wore them. Airfield Estates is a family owned vineyard in Eastern Washington. Each of their wines is named after a WWII airplane. The Woodinville tasting room looks like a runway; adorned with vintage pictures of the vineyard. The venue is a great place to mingle and chat about cool airplanes. It was a great time. See the photos below.

3 March Dinner Meeting Flying the Bone On Tuesday the 26th, we held March meeting at a local Italian Pizza place in Georgetown and listened to a captivating and informative talk about flying the B1B Bomber by Orrin Pierce, Flight Test Operations manager currently assigned to Everett. After a brief explanation of how he grew up locally and attended the UofW and then off to pilot training, he then described the B1 and what a typical mission would look like. He entered active duty just in time to support the aftermath of Sept 11 th He captivated the audience with stories about both mission flying and instructing in the B1 both home and abroad. All of the stories resonated with the audience as we were all intently listening, hanging on to his every word. He finished up by thanking his family for his support, and who were also present. The evening was a rousing success, with great food, a great speaker and a great turnout. Here are some pictures of the event.
