2017 Page 6 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Sharon Rainwater Chapter N2 - Humble, TX Did we all go into hibernation and sleep through winter like the bears or didn t we have a winter this year? Everything is blooming and the oak and pine trees are dropping their pollen earlier than I ever remember this year. But that just makes for more riding time and I hope that you ve been able to take advantage of our early Spring-like weather. that N2 is in the house. March is going to be a busy month with a No-Meal Ride, Breakfast with N2, Black Walnut Café breakfast ride, Social Dinner at Tin Roof, Pickett House Ride, Blessing of the Bikes and ride, Monthly Meeting, and the LA District Rally in Lafayette, LA. It is rally time of the year, so let s get out there and show everyone Ten interesting facts you should know about March: March is the third month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, it was the first month in the early Roman calendar with March 1 designated as the new year. It was named Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war. Great Britain and her Colonies continued to use March as their beginning month until March s birthstone is aquamarine and bloodstone. Its birth flower is the Daffodil (Narcissus). The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month. In the USA March is National Nutrition Month, National Peanut Month, National Women s History Month, and American Red Cross Month. March starts on the same day of the week as November, every year. Four U.S. Presidents, Andrew Jackson, James Madison, Grover Cleveland, and John Tyler were born in March. When the Anglo-Saxons converted to Christianity, they held their chief season of fasting at this time, the month fast of lenet monet which in time became Lent. We hope to see each of you at some of our events through March and remember BEE SEEN IN 2017.

2017 Page 7 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX CHANGES IN GWRRA TRAINING By Linda Stich As I m reading the March Edition of Wing World, pages 18 to 21 relate to Rider Education. Clara Boldt, Director of Training, has advised the GWRRA University has released 30 modules to the Certified Instructors and Instructor Trainers. The new modules are all about Friends, Fun, Safety and Knowledge. When you attend one or more of the new modules, Ms. Boldt has requested feedback by , text or snail mail. The feedback will be instrumental as they develop new modules. The team continues to improve and gather new ideas for the modules. The CPR/First Aid Programs have also undergone a makeover per Lydia Bourg, Rider Education Director CPR/First Aid. During 2016 our First Aid Instructors and Instructor Trainers received new training and materials developed under the changes made in This means better videos and a 4-5 hour class covering AED, CPR, and First Aid instead of eight hours. The use of an AED will be taught as part of the MEDIC First Aid curriculum. If a member uses an AED and follows the procedures taught in the class, they will be covered under the US Federal Good Samaritan laws, assuming that their instructor did not deviate from the curriculum. As Lydia stated, we hope members will never need the skills learned in these classes but they will be better prepared to handle an emergency should it arise. There are also articles on Membership Enhancement, Motorist Awareness, and Distracted Driving. Believe it or not, the highest level of distraction is using Siri, version ios7 at time of research, pages 20-21, by Barri Critzman. In our February monthly meeting someone, Guyland I believe, mentioned the side-stand switch. There is an article on page 30 addressing this issue on trike s. You also should have received your new Gold Book 2017 Directory. Be sure to place it in your bike in the event you need to contact someone for assistance while out on the open road. Did you know you could view Wing World online? Be safe and enjoy the ride!! Kudos to.. Mike & Robin Thacker - for hosting our annual wiener roast on such a beautiful day! Chapter N2 - for the great turnout to our Valentine Lunch Ride to Black Walnut Cafe! It made all the hard work well worth the effort. Jerry Barnett - Congratulations to Jerry for being nominated IOY (Individual of the Year) by Chapter N2. Steve Fleming - for presenting the Co-Rider seminar. Words of Wisdom By Linda Stich The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket. - Will Rogers

Page 8 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER EDUCATOR Kenny Shults Chapter N2 - Humble, TX RIDER ED GIMME 5 Hello everyone. This month I wanted to talk about the levels program. I am and always have been a believer in this program because it is designed to make us safer riders. I also believe we should support our organization and their programs. This Article describes it better than I can. So here it is. Texas District should rise to a Higher Level The Rider Education Program (REP) Levels program has been around for many years, however not all riders aspire to achieve all four Levels. There are two facts which cannot be denied. One, we are all getting older each day. Two, motorcycle crashes are on the increase in Texas as well as nationally. These two facts have nothing to do with helmets but I sure hope I have one on my head when I need it. There are Four Levels in the REP. Level I is Safety by Commitment, Level II is Safety by Education, Level III is Safety by Preparedness, and Level IV is Safety by Enhanced Commitment & Preparedness. The level you achieve is up to you. Yes, Level IV requires the commitment of the wearing of a helmet. Even if you do not wish to become a Level IV we should ALL adhere to the first three levels. Occasionally, we may have witnessed that some Level IVs do not always wear their helmet. Remember, we are not the GWRRA Sheriff Deputies. It is true the Level Fours have made a pledge but have you considered that when you go ONE MILE OVER the speed limit you are breaking the law, which is a lot worse than breaking a pledge. We are all responsible for ourselves. Let s keep the peer pressure at home. We can ALL try to lead by example and wear all our safety equipment and let people know the potential benefits but let s not drive members away by our insistence or pressure. It would be a challenge for the Texas District to have zero motorcycle crashes from now through This can start with our recommitment to the REP Levels Program and getting as many involved with the Levels program as we can. This can be an ongoing goal to reduce the number of crashes in Iowa. This movement should start today by getting to any riding enhancement course we can take, which will help us obtain this two pronged goal. Schedule and take an Experienced Rider Course (ERC), a Trike Rider Course (TRC), a Trailering Course (TC), or at the very least, a Parking Lot Practice (PLP) with a GWRRA Certified PLP Facilitator. Let s not forget the Co-Riders who have the awesome responsibility of helping the Rider. Don t forget a good First Aid refresher course just in case you need it. Let s get trained, reduce crashes and move Texas to Higher Levels Joe and Judy Pirillo, Iowa Senior District Educators

Page 9 MEC SPOTLIGHT Steve & Linda Seligman, (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) Master Tour Riders 6748 & 6747 Chapter N2 - Humble, TX As we are all aware, GWRRA s Couple of the Year Program provides an opportunity for local Chapters to recognize and honor a Couple each year for their dedication, accomplishments and participation within the Chapter. These Couples demonstrate what it means to be a committed, involved, and supporting member of the GWRRA family. A newer GWRRA recognition program is the Individual of the Year Program. This program is to recognize individuals who contribute a great deal to their chapter and GWRRA as a whole. This program gives chapters a way to acknowledge these individual members. For the past few years Steve and I have been investigating the Individual of the Year Program. I was thrilled at the 2017 Mid-Winter meeting to see that Texas District has now implemented this program. I also saw one chapter introduce their individual of the Year. So Randy Rainwater and I had a conversation at the meetings. We finally found a way to recognize someone in our chapter who is not part of a Couple but is a great supporter of TX-N2. See if you can guess who we honored with the 2017 Individual recognition. Got it???? Member of GWRRA since February 2009 Member of N2 since 2009 Attends most of the chapter functions Attends many rallies - Region H, Texas District, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas Has ridden the 40 to Phoenix Always helping the chapter and chapter members Makes a pretty good banana pudding The TX-N2 members are honored to name Jerry Barnett as our 2017 Individual of the Year!!!!

Page 10 NEWS FROM THE CAMPING COORDINATORS Rex & Ann Nix Chapter N2 - Humble, TX 15 Uses for Duck Tape at the Campsite By Jessica Sanders (Reserve.America.com) We ve found that duct tape is not a perfect solution for anything. But with a little ingenuity, in a pinch, it s an adequate solution for just about everything, said Jamie Hyneman, one of the creative and whacky masterminds behind MythBusters. When it comes to camping, he couldn t be more right. Duct tape should be in every backpacker s survival kit and every camper s toolbox. Here are 15 uses for duct tape. When the time comes, you ll be glad you have it. Repair a Tear Duct tape is a temporary tear fix in nearly any situation, whether it s your tent, a camping chair, a tarp or your sleeping bag that s in need of repair. Put a strip of duct tape on the front and back of the ripped item for extra reinforcement. Make a Rope Though this shouldn t be your first option, twisted duct tape can substitute for a non-load bearing rope in the case that you left yours at home. For a thin rope, simply coil two long pieces of tape together. Use more pieces for added thickness. Seal Packages of Food Use duct tape to close packages of food when you leave your campsite or go to bed. Curious animals are attracted to crumbs and scents, so keep everything closed up tight with a strip of duct tape. Temporary Sprained Ankle Wrap Duct tape can be used to support a sprained or rolled ankle when you re far from a hospital. Fly Trap If your campsite has more flies than you can handle swatting, hang a strip of duct tape somewhere in your campsite and wait for the pesky insects to stick to it. The best place for this is near the food, where the flies are likely to gather. Create a Spear Fishing Pole Want to catch a fish, but don t have a pole? Tape your knife to a long stick, and create a spear fishing pole. Be sure the tape is wrapped tight and thick before trying to catch anything. Keep Your Tent Closed A busted zipper lets in the cold and bugs as your tent door flaps in the wind. Hold the door down with duct tape, and deal with your broken zipper at home. Make a Windbreaker If the wind picks up in your campsite, tape a few sturdy trash bags together and hang them on the side of your pop up shelter for a windbreaker wall. Tape the windbreaker to the poles of your shelter so it doesn t blow in the wind, which would defeat the purpose. Cover a Blister Hiking with a blister is painful, especially if you re trekking for miles at a time. Cover the affected, or potentially affected, area with duct tape to avoid any further pain. Fix Your Glasses If your glasses break straight down the middle, use duct tape to put them back together. Simply wrap a thin strip of tape a few times around for a quick and easy fix. Mark a Trail If you re hiking in unfamiliar territory, with few trail markers, make your own. But, don t leave them on the trees; take each strip off as you find your way back.

Page 11 (15 Uses for Duck Tape at the Campsite, cont.) Fix a Broken Tent or Fishing Pole A broken tent or fishing pole should be replaced or fixed in a shop. While at the campsite, however, use duct tape for a temporary remedy. The tape will hold for a few days so you can still make use of the items when you need them most. Keep Your Tablecloth On On an especially blustery day your tablecloth will blow around the campsite. Tape the sides down to keep it on the table. Fix a Leaky Water Bottle Place a thick strip of duct tape over a crack in your water bottle. Reinforce the patch with two or three strips to be sure no water leaks on you or in your backpack. Keep the Cold Out Wrap duct tape around the seams of your tent windows. On an especially cold night, this will help keep as much of the chill outside as possible. GET WELL WISHES GO OUT TO Diane Deloach

Page 12 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT DOWN THE DRAIN 1. GREASE or COOKING OIL - it traps debris and creates sludge, also includes mayonnaise and salad dressing 2. BUTTER - congeals and over time creates a water resistant barrier 3. COFFEE GROUNDS - Not completely water soluble and mix with oil and grease al ready in pipes. Dump in trash or compost 4. PASTA / RICE - It grows and grows and grows, major expansion 5. FLOUR - Know how sticky your fingers get when you try to wash flour off your hands, same in the drain. Flour + water = glue like substance. 6. PRODUCE STICKERS - Clogs up filters in water treatment plants. 7. EGG SHELLS - Hard on disposal blades and membranes wrap around grinding apparatus. Shells compound other blockages. 8. MEDICATION - Pharmaceuticals are not good for humans nor animals. Best to crush pills, put liquids or powders in a baggie with clean cat litter, coffee grounds, etc. and dispose in trash. 9. FLUSHABLE CAT LITTER - 2 problems: Cat feces has a parasite and it is not destroyed during water treatment, toxoplasmosis. Threat to marine life. Plus causes clogs and major issues with septic systems. 10. PEELS / SKIN - from fruits and vegetables also clog drains. 11. FLUSHABLE WIPES, COTTON BALLS, PAPER TOWELS, etc. - due to their absorbency combines with other debris in drain creating clogs. There are many more items you could think of to add to this list. Just wanted to give you something to think about. Cook covered on low for 30 minutes. Add in diced or shredded chicken and the ½ cup of cream; stir gently and heat the chicken and cream in with the dumpling mixture. Spoon into bowls and enjoy!
