Board Meeting November 1st, 2011 The Board meeting was attended by Larry, Maurice, David, Roger and Keith. 1) Financial Report the Club s account has $ 1, ) Memberships: Total Club memberships are currently 71. 3) 2012 Car Show Received contract from Saint Mary s, and $ down payment is to be submitted. - New car signs have been purchased, that completes all necessary signage for the 2012 Show $61 bill was paid. - Car Show mailer to be forwarded to Ken for major rework. - New field parking chart to be made; parking, registration and ballot counting procedures revised. Keith brought a local supplier s award plaque; different color to be investigated; supplier under consideration. 4) Board positions Larry Palguta - President; Herm Marrese V.P. 3 Our Club s Last Event for the 2011 Season Our Club s Xmas/Hanukkah Party on Saturday, December 10 th. This will be a 6:30 pm Pot Luck Dinner at Jim & Kim s Betz home at: Fellows Street, South Bend, IN Tel # (574) Club members planning to attend, please contact Kim at (574) as to what food they will be bringing to the party, as we don t want to have 10 plates of potato salad! The Club will be providing the meat dishes, and members should bring their own beverage. There will be an Optional Gift Exchange at this party, with the following rules: Each guy to bring a gift for a guy with a British or motoring theme for the value of $15 to $20, and each gal to bring a gift for a gal for the value $15 to $ Summer Season s Last Club Dinner/General Meeting Oct 19 th. 24 members braved the cool/ rainy/windy weather to attend this meeting at Papa Vino s Italian Restaurant in Mishawaka. On entering the restaurant the early birds were advised that the restaurant did not have a reservation for the club. Hmm. when I arrived and advised the management that the dinner had been booked two weeks earlier and that two days earlier had visited the restaurant to check on the reservation, that was confirmed, the restaurant manager hurriedly apologized for their dropping the ball, and laid out tables in a room where we were then seated, and the problem was solved. We had a good meal, which was served hot, but had to hurry the ordering process that was served by just one waiter!! The restaurant had a noisy atmosphere and Larry had to walk around our tables to give 3 Club Reports to members. Fall Club Election: Herminne Marrese, David Piser and Tom Shumaker were voted onto the Club Board, and their positions will be firmed up at the next Club Board meeting on November 1, There will not be a Club Board meeting in December. Financial Report: David Piser reported that the current cash balance of the Club is $ 1, Page 4 of 8

4 Passing of PJ s 1978 Arkley-Midget: Paul Dillon advised at this meeting that his car was involved in an accident, and that it sustained so much damage, that the car will be cannibalized (i.e., parted out for parts - Web Carbs, 4 cyl. Engine, etc., etc.) Anyone interested in parts call Paul at (574) Some photos from Papa Vino s: Michiana Brits 2011 Annual Fall Colors Drive on October 22 nd. (Trip report submitted by Tom Shumaker) It was a brisk 30 degree morning as I headed out to my little British car to warm her up for a romp through the hills and curves of the countryside. I wasn't alone as Randy and Bev's driveway began to fill with British iron. Even one came via trailer. As we gathered and food filled the tables for the late afternoon feast, Randy prepared us for the journey that was before us. Along the journey, buzzards flew overhead waiting for one of us to fall short of our destination, deer scampered at the site of our caravan of mighty little cars rolling down the road. Even though the map took us down the same roads we traveled last year, I saw it anew as sunshine blessed our drive. The roar of the fire at the restaurant could only be felt as talk of British cars and previous trips were discussed. After lunch many of us braved the lowering of our tops and enjoyed the fresh air and occasional smell of burning leaves. As the journey ended, we gathered up our forks, spoons, bowls and plates and settled down to a wonderful feast and conversation remembering the times before electronics had taken over our lives. A wonderful trip has been stored away as memories as well as our cars will be prepared for their winter's rest... Until next year!! On the next page is a collage of photos from the Fall Colors Drive. 5 Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car magazine The following has been received to alert members of an article in this magazine, so that folks can submit their articles to Hemmings: I am a subscriber to Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car magazine - In the new November 2011 issue they are asking for short stories 500 words or less on Triumph Spitfires in honor of the 50 th anniversary of the introduction in the 1962 London Motor Show. article and pictures to dlachance@hemmings.com with the words Spitfire Stories in the subject line. We have quite a few members with Spitfires bet there is a story in there somewhere. In another request they are looking for vintage sports cars that were bought new by the current owner - I am not sure we have any of these but as above with original owner in the subject line. In every month s Newsletter, I will submit a topic that I hope you will find useful in connection with the maintenance and enjoyment of our cars. This month the topic is How to Replace that Oil Pan Gasket. ( This article reproduced by permission of the VTR) Page 6 of 8

6 Some of the most common problems with a leaky oil pan gasket stem from not using sufficient care when re-attaching the pan and replacing the gasket. When an oil pan is over-tightened, it causes the holes to bend upward toward the block. A gasket will seldom fill in the "new" gaps so it leaks. Sealants will work and fill in these new spaces, but we are all guilty of being in too much of a hurry so we don't allow them to cure properly and when you put oil or any kind of pressure behind it, it blows out the sealants ability to seal. Two gaskets of the "rubberized" material variety may help by providing the cushion necessary to fill the uneven surface created by over-tightening. I have used everything from a 1x4 board to a 500 lb. anvil to straighten out oil pan holes. If you use a 1x4, place the even sawed, smooth end under the lip (outside bottom) of the pan and with a hammer, lightly tap the area of each oil pan hole until it is visibly even with the rest of the sealing surface of the pan. Spread a thin bead of sealant on the sealing surface of the pan, and apply the gasket, pressing down all the way around the pan and sort of wiggling the gasket a bit to spread the sealant. Turn the pan over and place it on a smooth even surface and press down in the center of the pan lightly and let it SIT OVERNIGHT. When you are ready to put the pan back on, clean each bolt hole in the bottom of the block with a good parts cleaner such as carburetor cleaner. Run a bead of sealant on top of yesterdays gasket and smear it as evenly as possible. Hold the pan close enough to the block to get the bolts started without actually touching the pan to the block until you have several bolts in to hold the pan up. Apply some sealant to the bolts before you thread them in. (This is why you cleaned the holes in the block) Once all the bolts are in place finger tight, snug them down in a criss-cross fashion until they are all just snug. When they are all snug, go back and torque them in the same criss-cross fashion to I would guess 7-10 ft.lbs. No more or you'll bend the holes out of shape again. Now, let it sit overnight again to let the sealant cure. Hopefully, we have stopped your leaky pan. I have found that LBCs are not too expensive to maintain, they just take a lot of TLC. Page 7 of 8

7 Recipe Corner The following recipe has been submitted by Herminne Marrese, and we thank her for it. CHICKEN TORTILLA SOUP Here is one of her favorite soup recipes that might be just in time for our cold/rainy/damp weather. It is a quick-fix dinner with most items on hand in the pantry. 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (about 2/3 lb) fresh or frozen; can use canned chicken (shred with fork from can). ½ tsp olive oil 1 cup chopped onions 1 Tbsp bottled lime juice (more or less to taste) ½ tsp minced garlic ½ tsp chili powder ½ tsp ground cumin 2 (14-1/2 oz. each) chicken broth 1 cup bottled salsa of your choice 1 cup frozen corn kernels 4 oz tortilla chips or more to your taste ¼ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese Heat the oil in large pot or Dutch oven soup pot. If using fresh chicken, cut into small bite-size chunks, adding them to the pot as you cut. Raise heat to high and cook 2 minutes. (if using canned chicken, just dump into pot.) Add onions, lime juice, garlic, chili powder and cumin. Continue cooking. Add broth, salsa and corn. Stir. Cover and bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium high and continue to boil 8 to 10 minutes to develop flavor. Meanwhile, crush tortilla chips slightly. Place chips in 6 soup bowls. Ladle the soup into the bowls. Sprinkle with cheese and serve. I hope to include a recipe in all future Club Newsletters, but of course this will depend on you, yes you!
