Roger has requested that people should bring their own lawn chairs due to the minimum number at the cottage, and also bring their own drinks although some soft drinks will be provided. Roger & Ruth Deacon 1785 W. 570N Howe, IN [Call if you get lost!] There are 3 ways to get to the Deacon s lake cottage: 1) East on the Toll Road east to the Sturgis/Lagrange exit. Leaving the Toll Road, turn right at the stop light onto Hwy 9, go approximately 2 miles to the next stop light and turn right onto Hwy 120. You are at the south edge of Howe, IN. Go 2 miles until you are about 1000 feet past the Twin Lakes Resort & Campground, and turn right onto road 185 West. Go straight in, up the hill, until it dead ends and turn right, go down the hill until you come to a cul-de-sac, keep going onto a white gravel drive bearing left around a tree. You have arrived. 2) East on McKinley Hwy go to Elkhart, turn right at the Chevy dealer when you go across the river, turn left at the next stop light and follow this road through town. At the edge of Elkhart, you will come to the R.R. tracks and a stop light, keep going straight until the next light and go straight. Do not take the right fork to the right. You will now be on the south side of the St. Joe River and eventually Hwy 20. Follow this through the town of Bristol past Hwy 13 and past Hwy 5 which goes to Shipshewana. You will go about 5 miles, and across the Pigeon River about ½ mile and the first road you come to on your left will be Road 185 West. Turn left and go straight in, up the hill, until it dead ends and turn right, go down the hill until you come to a cul-de-sac, keep going onto a white gravel drive bearing left around a tree. You have arrived. 3) East on Hwy 20 go until you come to the town of Lagrange. At the light, turn left onto Hwy 9 and go about 6 miles to the town of Howe. At the intersection/light of Hwy 120 on the south side of Howe, turn left and go 2 miles until you are about 1000 feet past the Twin Lakes Resort & Campground, and turn right onto road 185 West. Go straight in, up the hill, until it dead ends and turn right, go down the hill until you come to a cul-de-sac, keep going onto a white gravel drive bearing left around a tree. You have arrived. Fall Tour 2013 On Thursday September 12th, the Michiana Brits will embark on their annual 4-day Fall Tour, this year traveling to Traverse City, MI. We will meet 7:30 AM for breakfast at JD's Truck Stop, NW corner of the intersection of the South Bend bypass and US 12, leaving at 8:30 AM to travel Red Bud Trail and northward. The travel route has already been checked out, including a Thursday stop for lunch at the Old Iron Bar & Grill in Grant, MI. Friday at 10 AM we will visit the Hagerty Insurance Company's great car collection with light refreshments, and there is also shopping and sight seeing, potentially a Saturday drive and lunch/dinner destination with the local LBC club (Twin Bay British Auto Club), our hotel by the lake, dining, and did I mention, more shopping for those so disposed. 5 of 14

During the Annual Meeting on September 18th at the Deacon's lake cottage, Tom Shumaker will discuss activities options such as : the Sept th "Taste of Traverse City" festival, local restaurants for dining, Renee's House of Quilts in Williamsburg, etc., etc. Of course, attendees are always able to select their own activities. Those who have made hotel reservations, please send an to Tom at ets8@comcast.net so he will have a list of attendees. The Fall Tour dates are Sept. 12th - 15th. We are staying at the AmericInn Traverse City, 1614 US Highway 31 North, Traverse City, MI Call and make your room reservation at We have had reports that they are full but that they will refer you to a hotel across the street. Mechanic's Reminder - as usual, we will cover about 900 miles on this Fall Tour. Make sure your car is capable of driving that much in four days. Check out your car and be ready to go - that includes back up spare parts, particularly if your car doesn't use spare parts that are readily available. 6 of 14 MAD DOGS 2013 by Larry Palguta Each year a number of Michiana Brits attend the Mad Dogs & Englishmen car show at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI. Deb and I have not attended in a couple of years, so this year we decided to go to the show, but it would be myself and our son Will. And this time we would travel with a different group the St. Joseph, MI group that leaves at the crack of dawn on Sunday. So I arranged to meet Dave Terhune and Bob Danielson at 6:30 AM by the True Value Hardware Store. I punched the address into Google, printed out a couple of maps, and was ready to go (assuming I could get myself and Will up and out the door at 5:30 AM). Another group was meeting at Roger Deacon's house at a more civilized time of 7:30 AM, but I figured being early was an advantage and couldn't go wrong. Bad assumption.

On Sunday July 14 th, Will and I managed to get out the driveway in our 1972 MGB at about 5:40 AM. Not a lot of light or people at that hour. Even the cats in the garage didn't want to be disturbed from their sleep. But it was a pleasant top-down drive up Orange Road west of South Bend, onto Red Bud Trail past the Motocross Race Track where 27,000 people attended the prior weekend's races, and through sleepy and deserted Buchanan, MI. Will said he liked the always-open vents above the transmission tunnel because this morning they provided heat and kept him warm. We followed Red Bud Trail to M139 and on to St. Joseph, where I actually remembered a shortcut across the southwest side of the intersection of M139 with M63, taking the shortcut at 6:25 AM and avoiding the stop light (and more, unbeknownst to me!). I could see we would arrive right at 6:30 AM as planned, and followed the map into St. Joseph where it got a bit confusing as we neared the downtown district. After turning around twice, and driving though the heart of St. Joseph which was all set up for the big Krasl Art Fair going on that weekend, we decided the map was totally wrong, headed south and stopped at McDonalds to have some breakfast. So my back up plan was to drive to the south edge of town, get on I-94 and get to Kalamazoo as quickly as possible. I did not know then that if I hadn't taken the small short cut and would have gone to the stoplight at M139 and M63, I probably would have seen Dave and Bob's cars in the parking lot of the hardware store by the intersection! My opinion of Google has taken a downward trend. We did make good time on I-94 as our MGB just hummed along at about mph and at least kept us out of the way of trucks and cars going well over 70. Will zonked out and slept. We skirted around the south and east sides of Kalamazoo, and headed up Gull Road toward Richland and Hickory Corners, MI. Will woke up well before we pulled into the Gilmore Museum at 8:20 AM, and at the entrance I said Good Morning to Bruce Buxton in his British Bobby uniform. We were so early that we were the first chrome bumper MGB to arrive, and I accidentally parked next to some rubber bumper MGBs (huge faupaux of etiquette!). We moved (as ordered) and got parked right at the road, always a desirable front row spot at Mad Dogs. Our camp chairs were set up on the southeast corner of one of the large barns and the roadway, where there is 7 of 14

always shade under a large poplar tree and cool breezes. A morning nap then ensued. Back row of Rubber Bumper MGBs Since this was Will's first visit to the Gilmore Museum, we went through all of the barns and buildings so he could see all of the car exhibits. Will had never seen a Duesenberg, and he got to see two of them up close. He said the museum was awesome, and the 1938 Mercedes Benz 540K Sport Tourer that survived the Dresden fire bombing was unbelievable. It had approximately a $10,000 sales price in 1938 and just two were manufactured (only this one survives!!!). 8 of Mercedes Benz 540K Sport Tourer

We went into the new Ford building to see the first Model A built by Ford and given to Thomas Edison, and saw the numerous top examples of early Ford cars. Across from where we had our chairs set up is the beginnings of a Lincoln building to house vintage models. It was easy to see that the Gilmore Museum is just growing by leaps and bounds, and obviously doing very well. It is a must see automotive museum. And onto the Mad Dogs car show. A nice day, not hot but warm, and the turnout was good but a little light compared to prior years. We saw a barn find MGA about as beat up as a driver can be, with rag for gas cap, no bonnet, wooden board bumper, duct taped on head light, chicken cage with fake chickens on the back, moonshine jug, and the driver dressed in overalls like one of the Clampetts. 9 We checked out two Morris Minors - a red convertible and a white hardtop. Some club members know that Deb and I are working on obtaining a Morris Minor convertible from the west coast, so Will and I had to look over the Moggies at the show and send her texts, photos and comments. Will considers the red 1967 Morris Minor Shortly after our morning snooze, we ran into Bob Danielson and David Terhune, and swapped stories of the morning's drive so we could figure out what happened. We ran into Jim Betz (sans LBC) and the young man he is mentoring, had lunch with them, and also saw Randy and Stan Glanders, Dale and Judy Zinn, Roger Deacon, Bob and Wendy Kerstetter, Bob and Mary Petersen, and Tom and Debbie Shumaker. Judy Zinn lifted the top cover on their MGTD and showed me their ½ gold & black (Purdue) and ½ blue & gold (ND) valve cover named A Car Divided. She and Dale were going to the GOF in St. Louis the next weekend where they did win the valve cover races! 10 of 14

Bob Danielson's 1 st Place Award blue Jaguar 150 About 12 Michiana Brits cars were in attendance of which five won awards. Our club's award winners were: Bob & Wendy Kerstetter MGB, Dale & Judy Zinn MGTD, Bob Danielson Jaguar 150, Dave Terhune MGA, and Wyn Laidig MG Midget. Having arrived at Mad Dogs early in the morning, Will and I called it a day around 2:20 PM and headed home. It turned out to be the hottest part of the day, and a hot drive home. We stopped at Appleby's in Three Rivers for dinner and a chance to cool down, and got home before 5:30 PM. All in all, a good day for lots of LBC driving, another good Mad Dogs show and visit to a great automotive museum. FOLLOW-UP : DINNER AT LINDY'S by Larry Palguta On July 17 th, the Brits met for their monthly meeting and dinner at Lindy's located on M62 between Cassopolis and Dowagiac. Many of those in attendance were looking for a better dining experience than the fiasco at Pats in Lapaz the previous month. The two dining events couldn't have been at more opposite ends of the dining spectrum. Twenty-four Brits seated at two 11 of 14

long tables in a large room, two waitresses, good service and food, and fun atmosphere, made an enjoyable dinner for everyone. The meeting started when Larry stood to address the members and Roger blew the British police whistle to get everyone's attention. The British police whistle was used at our car show by Dan Craft and Wendy Kerstetter while selling 50/50 raffle tickets, and was returned to Larry who brought it home many years earlier from Hong Kong. David reported we had lots of money in the account, everyone was reminded about the Annual Meeting at the Deacon's lake cottage on August 18 th, and a wrap-up of of car show items was covered. A number of Brits who won awards at Mad Dogs were recognized. Other items were the Fall Tour's scheduled visit to the Hagerty Car Collection, Membership Appreciation dinner, possible change in British Marque subscriptions, and the Niles Cruise- In car shows on July 24 th (German, British & Italian cars) and August 28 th (Import Night). Lindy's continues to be a very reliable and good restaurant for our meetings, and will certainly be visited again. Sad News Some of our long-time members know Phil and Diane Campbell of Sturgis, MI. They were Michiana Brits members from the late 90's through the mid-2000's, and were members of Mad Dogs. On July 29, 2013 Phil passed away after a bout with cancer. 2 Cars for Sale Member Dan Pishkur is selling his 1971 TR-6. Here are the details:1971 TR-6 for sale. Good condition, no rust. $8750. 12 Greetings~ I am Keith Gronquist, a retired U.S. Air Force Officer and longstanding member of the British Auto Club of Las Vegas. I would be most grateful if you would pass along the following narrative, and attachments, to your members and/or anyone else who may be interested in owning a nice classic car: Regretfully, after 26 years together, the past 22 in the sunny, dry southwest, we must now sell our much-loved 1962 Austin-Healey. The sole reason for the sale is that recently, after many years of contemplation, I finally succumbed to the urge to have another vintage car I've always wanted...an early Corvette. The problem is that we now have four cars but only a three-car garage. I have set the sale price at $29,500...which I believe to be a very reasonable number given what I've seen of Healey sales, and from what I've been advised by people who have knowledge of the value of these great classic cars. This is not a desperation sale, but rather than ask for a higher amount that I could probably get in time, we chose to set the price low for an early sale rather than run the potential risk of still having the car after a prolonged period of monthly rental expenses for enclosed storage. We have never offered the car for sale since we purchased it 26 years ago. I have many details about the car, as well as numerous receipts and several photos. I can also make available the contact information for our British Auto Club's resident expert on all matters Austin Healey...a retired United Airlines 747 Captain who has two Austin-Healeys himself, and who knows a lot about these cars. He knows our car well and is a straight-shooter. For anyone who may be interested, I can be reached at: kgronquist@cox.net (H) (C) Thank you~ Keith Gronquist 13 of 14
