2016 Page 6 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Sharon Rainwater 2017 will be filled with more awesome trips, so if you have any ideas of locations or areas of the country that you ve always wanted to go to just let one of the N2 Staff Members know about it and we ll see if we can get-r-done in Impromptu weekday rides will continue and we always need more destinations for those rides. Let s finish 2016 on a strong note and prepare for a great Remember BEE SEEN IN Wow, we ve had some really large turnouts for August and September events, including Wing Ding in Billings, MT. We even had about 25 people at the Impromptu Ride to Farmhouse on the Lake on Wednesday, September 28, with 14 of those from N2 and the others from Chapter C. It was a nice day to ride, with the first day of cooler temperatures. Can you believe that October is already here and we ll be riding to Arkansas for the Region H Fall Foliage Ride, camping after Thanksgiving Day, and celebrating Christmas before we know it. It has been a great year already and I m sure we ll wrap it up in the normal N2 style. I m not sure we can top the awesome motorcycle trip that we took to Wing Ding in 2016 and visited 12 of the western states, but we ll surely try our best. Now is the time to be putting on those thinking caps for new places to ride to in With your help, it will be another fun-filled year. We have a few trips left on our 2016 future rides list: Vicksburg, MS, Painted Churches, Newman s Castle, and a picnic ride to the Huntsville Prison Museum. We have also discussed a Big Bend trip a few times along with more camping trips for Words of Wisdom Submitted by Linda Stich Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it. Greg Anderson

2016 Page 7 FIRST FALL IMPROMTU RIDE By Linda Stich What a great day for a lunch ride to the Farmhouse on the Lake near Livingston and Onalaska Wednesday, September 28th. Twelve of us embarked on our journey from the Valero on Northpark and went north on Hwy. 59 to Cleveland, through Coldspring to our ultimate destination. We were met by the Uphoffs who had been patiently waiting for our arrival. Chapter C also joined us for a spectacular lunch. We opted to eat outside where there was a very pleasant breeze and beautiful views of Lake Livingston. They offer a daily Blue Plate Special. Wednesday was Chicken & Dumplings; however, you could also choose from Oven Fried Pork Chop, Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken, or Grilled Chicken. You had your choice of 2 numerous side dishes. They also offered an assortment of desserts. Hollywood and California chose a dessert of Banana Pudding Pie and John enjoyed a piece of Millionaire Pie. Sharon was salivating and contemplating snitching a bite! The food was great and worth another trip. We all parted going our separate ways after we had a grand time of visiting and having FUN as we usually do. Randy always does an awesome job of providing different routes for us to travel to and from our destinations. The weather was very cooperative, but by the late afternoon it began to get hot. This was my first ride in a while and a much needed break. I had to find out if I could still function on a motorcycle/trike. Had a little issue with the CB; however, Bubba Tice discovered it was a loose connection not the loose nut behind the handle bars! Or maybe it was, who knows? Steve Seligman helped me with the radio and gas cap on the extra tank that was too tight. Thanks guys! By the end of the day, I was ready to get off the trike and out of the heat. I just need to get some more rides in before I attempt the Fall Foliage Ride in Arkansas from October 21 st to the 23 rd. Looking forward to going to Lake Ouachita State Park, the Fruitcake ride, and Wolf Creek Park Camping Thanksgiving weekend. I also found out there is a Farmhouse Café in Huntsville. They offer the same Blue Plate Specials. One Choice of the following meats: Daily Choice of Meat (see list below) Chicken Fried Steak Chicken Fried Chicken Grilled Chicken Two Choices of the following vegetables: Two daily choices of vegetables (see list below) Mashed Potatoes Turnip Greens Macaroni & Cheese Fried Okra Corn Coleslaw Macaroni Salad Pies (by the slice): Lemon Ice Box Pie Chocolate Mousse Pie Strawberry Pie (seasonal) Banana Pudding Pie Millionaire Pie (seasonal) Pecan Chocolate Chip Pie Peanut Butter Pie Apple Pie Coconut Creme Pie Pecan Pie (seasonal) Pinto Beans Peaches Bananas & Strawberries Italian green beans Sweet Potatoes Carrot Slaw Tomato Cucumber Salad

2016 Page 8 Camping during Wing Ding 2016 NEWS FROM THE CAMPING COORDINATORS Rex & Ann Nix This year, we had several folks going to Wing Ding in Billings, Montana. I believe we had 7 different groups, taking 7 different routes. Some were hoteling during their travels and others were camping. It seems most of the states due north from Texas to Canada and all the way to the west coast saw one or more of our group camping while traveling through. Group 1 spent three weeks on the road and had campers traveling west to California, north along the coast to Washington, east to Glacier NP and back down to Colorado, and back home. Group 2 had two weeks to use and was also camping going west to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, then north stopping at every National Park, Monument and Museum to Yellowstone, a stay at Billings, then over to the Devils Tower, and south again stopping at as much as they could manage time to see. Group 3 headed north from Houston and primarily traveled north and west to Billings, then worked their way east and south, also camping. They also had three weeks to hang out visiting various places. Group 4 had 2 weeks on the road and stayed at hotels during their travels. Group 5 were off traveling and we think they were on the road 4 weeks, we still haven t heard how their vacation went, but knowing them, they had a blast. Group 6 traveled on their two trikes and, from what I hear, they had a safe and memorable trip. We happened to cross their paths a few times and I always saw big smiles. Then we had another Group 7, the mystery group. I heard they were going to go to Niagara Falls and swing across Canada to Billings, then work their way back home. For the sake of guessing, I want to say they were on the road three weeks. In all, we had at last tally, 9 couples, each traveling about 5500 miles each on 8 bikes and two cars traveling about miles. Even though we all had different places we wanted to see and different things to do, we all accomplished our goals of traveling around America, enjoying beautiful places with friends, and all having a safe trip. I understand some had challenges with illness, wind, rain, fog, snow, flies, assorted animals in the road, electrical wiring on trailers, bikes that wanted to just stop running without notice, and other drivers not paying attention to what they were doing, The camper was flawless, and we had no issues during the trip. Ann actually did well driving the rig, and with a bit more coaching, she will be pretty good at parking it in a back in camping spot. We learned that it is ok to not bring everything, and no matter what happens, we can adapt if needed. We also learned that there is more to camping than what we have been doing. We met some boondockers who have been on the road for months living on BLM land and really seeing the back country. This had me thinking about how we always make sure we have an organized place to stay, but what about staying on a mountain overlooking large valleys with no people, no electricity, and the only comforts you have are what you bring with you. This may not be for everybody, heck it might not even be for me, but how do you know without checking it out. Well, thinking can be a dangerous thing. Back to reality, don t forget the Thanksgiving campout at Wolf Creek Park north of Cold Springs. If you plan to go and don t have a site yet, you may have a bit of a challenge getting one now. If so, call me and we will see if there is a way to get you in...no promises. The Thanksgiving campout is a time of spending with friends, getting away from the mainstay life of all the hustle and bustle that comes during the holiday rush. It is a few short days of calm and relaxation with family, friends, and even strangers that seem to find their way into our lives, even if only for a few minutes. One thing Ann and I both agree on, we want to go back to Utah and spend several weeks there seeing all the National Parks in the lower half of the state. I can see how that would keep us busy for a couple of years to come. Not a bad way to spend our days. So everything said, it seems we as a chapter had a successful trip. I have not heard of anyone on their travels to Wing Ding having any major issues, so let s hope that stays true. Ann and I had an opportunity to pull our teardrop on this trip. This camper is too heavy to pull with the bike, so we used her car. The biggest challenge we seemed to have is where to put your shoes when you get in to go to sleep.

2016 Page 10 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER EDUCATOR Kenny Shults beside large bodies of water. We found several states with signs warning you of high wind areas. When you have assessed the conditions, you can set up your riding position for the oncoming blast. Give yourself margin for error. Ride in the middle of the lane and don t aim for apexes as a sudden gust may blow you into oncoming traffic or off the side of the road. Also when group riding, leave extra room for your fellow riders to negotiate the winds. Hello my friends, Don t Get Blown Away! One of the trickiest conditions to ride in is high wind, especially if the road is also wet. High winds can be dangerous as they can blow your bike off course. They can also be tiring on a rider and just plain annoying. You wouldn t go riding in galeforce winds on purpose. However, sometimes you simply get caught out by high winds, so you need to be prepared. While attending wing ding this year, Diane and I took the time to ride Bear Tooth Pass. Steve Fleming planed a great ride and his son-in-law joined us. We had a great adventure, but was very surprised at the high winds when we reached the top. There were times when I had to lean heavily to stay in my lane. Also in the open planes of New Mexico, we had a constant cross wind to deal with. So I thought I would look for some tip to help you deal with the winds and these are a few I found. Be alert for tell-tale signs of the wind, so you can judge which way it is blowing. Look at grass, the tops of trees, flags, windmills, and birds. If they are blowing in one direction, you can set up for the blast, but if they are blustering back and forth, you are in for a battering. Places of high winds are typically open plains, valleys, mountain tops, and Look out for protection from crosswinds, such as buildings, bushes, lines of trees, culverts, and moving protection such as vans and trucks. If the wind is blowing from the side, you will be leaning the bike into the wind and when you enter the protection zone, the bike will suddenly tip further. Likewise, as you leave the protection, you will be blown the opposite way. In small protection zones, this can blow you one way and the other very quickly. Take more frequent rests. Looking for the prevailing wind, setting up your riding position and reacting to being blown around takes it out of a rider, physically and mentally. You ll need to take more breaks. High wind is not a good condition to plan to ride in; however it would be a good idea to practice riding on a windy day. You need to know how your bike will react to wind, as all bike are different. Trikes and bikes react very differently to wind gust but it is easy to over react in both cases so practicing and knowing your bike will make you much safer when you get supervised but the winds.

2016 Page 11 MEC SPOTLIGHT Steve & Linda Seligman, (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) Master Tour Riders 6748 & 6747 Just a reminder of some upcoming FUN events: August and September were a little quiet at home for Chapter N2. A large amount of our members were off having fun on their way to and from Wing Ding 38 in Billings, Montana. Chapter N2 had 6 groups with 6 different routes!!! This was different than in 2007, when there was one large group from Chapter N2 who road to Wing Ding together. But the main goal for these 6 groups was to enjoy all or a part of Wing Ding. Which happened!!! Steve and I rode with Randy and Sharon Rainwater through 12 states and about 6800 miles. We rode through Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. It was a great 25 days and a heck of a lot of fun!!! October 21-22, 2016 Region H Fall Foliage Ride to Hot Springs, Arkansas and then the Hub in Marble Falls, Arkansas April 27-29, 2017 Region H Rally in Marshall, Texas. The theme is Boogie Woogie Down to Marshall. May 18-20, 2017 Texas District Rally, theme and hotels coming soon August 27 - September 2, 2017 Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas at the Gaylord Texan Hotel Remember to look at our website, read the monthly newsletter, and watch For Randy Rainwater s weekly reminder s for all of the FUN events going on in our chapter. Come out and play with us!!! (Shared by our own Jim Hartley)

2016 Page 12 My Labor of Love By Karen Frazier, Region H Educator From the time we began riding with Chapter N2 and GWRRA, our passion has always been in the Rider Ed that GWRRA provides to its members. As many of you know, our very first ride with Chapter N2 was a Road Captain course and from that first ride we were hooked. Because of our LOVE for GWRRA, I decided I wanted to donate something for Wing Ding to help raise funds for the Rider Ed program. As I began planning, I wanted it to represent what GWRRA members LOVE, riding. When I saw these embroidery patterns of all the states, I knew this was exactly what I wanted the quilt to represent. For three months I drew and redrew the design and chose the colors; then I began buying the materials I would use. We started the sewing of the quilt on July 1, 2015, and finished it June 30, It was 11 months of a labor of LOVE. Each state took 6 to 8 hours to complete the embroidery and used 24 to 30 different colors of thread. I also designed each of the embroidered motorcycles. We used two machines to complete the embroidery. As we worked on each state, we would remember the rides we had taken through the states, what rally or event we attended, and all the friends we meet. We would laugh as I reminded Ricky of all the fun we had and all the new friends we made. That is when I realized the quilt was more than a donation; it was a Labor of LOVE. For Ricky it was as if he was on the ride again as he has Alzheimer s which has advanced a lot in the past year. So for me this donation became a Labor of LOVE for three reasons. First for our LOVE of GWRRA and the Rider Ed program, second so the winner could LOVE the quilt and third for my LOVE of my husband and the memories I can give him before he loses these wonderful memories. As we began our trip to Wing Ding, Ricky told me he thought this would be his last long trip he would remember, so we did everything we could and took a lot of pictures. To help him remember, I bought puzzles of the places we went. We plan to put them together and hang them in our sewing shop for him to see each day. The winner of the raffle was Mary Rowlet, the Oklahoma District Educator s wife, but I feel I was the real winner because of all the memories and LOVE I received. We are very fortunate to have such a talented and generous couple among our N2 family!!! Thanks Ricky & Karen

2016 Page 13 NEWS FROM THE 2016 COUPLE OF THE YEAR Steve & Linda Seligman Wing Ding is always very exciting for the members in regards to the Couple of the Year Program. This is where the International Couple of the Year is named. Through the year, each chapter has named their current year Chapter Couple of the Year. Then each District has held their selection process and so has each Region. Now it is time for the prior year Region Couple of the Year to participate in the International Couple of the Year selection process. Well, at Wing Ding 38 in Billings, Montana the International Couple of the Year were announced. It is our own Region H Couple of the Year, Steve and Carolyn Cotton. The Cottons joined GWRRA in The Cottons are members of Oklahoma Chapter X in Stillwater, OK. Congratulations to the Cottons!

2016 Page 14 Steve & Billie Fleming Our Wing Ding West Coast Swing Trip How can you put 30 days of wonderful motorcycle riding into a short article for a newsletter? I m not sure it can be done but I ll give it a shot. We left home on August 11th and headed to Sweetwater as our first stop for the night. On the way we made a lunch stop at the Rancher s Steak House. The temps were good in the morning but started to rise after lunch. By the time we got to Sweetwater the bike said it was 105. We took a dip in the pool after getting checked in. The next morning we were heading to Tucumcari, NM and it looked like we would be in by about 1:30pm so we cancelled the hotel and went on to Albuquerque instead. We spent 4 nights there before heading on West. We had breakfast in Gallup at the El Rancho Hotel and Restaurant. Many movies stars have stayed in this hotel while making westerns and other movies in the area. Breakfast was a little pricey but very tasty. Leaving there we headed on and came across a sign for the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Parks. We took the detour and rode through the parks. From there we got back on I-40 and headed to Winslow, AZ to stand on the corner. That was a refreshing stop. Then on into Kingman to our hotel. We took another unscheduled trip since it was still early and went to Hackberry, AZ to their General Store on old Route 66. Interesting place to say the least. Then back to the hotel for the night. The next morning we were on our way to Las Vegas but had to make a planned stop at the World Famous Coffee Cup that we had visited with the group on our first Wing Ding trip in Same great food as before. We checked into our Holiday Inn Desert Resort in Vegas and spent the next 3 nights there taking in 3 shows and I rode the High Roller Ferris Wheel. The highlight of the Vegas stay for us was The Jersey Boys show. Awesome performance! We made a visit to Fremont Street also and found that they have added a Zip Line attraction under the awning. Didn t do it but took some pictures. Looked like fun to me but not in the budget this trip. From Vegas we made the trek across the desert into the High Sierras of Northern California coming in by Mono Lake (pictured below) and on to Walker where we stayed at the very quaint Toiyabe Motel. The owners were so friendly that we felt like we had friends when we left. From Walker we went into Willits, CA in preparations for our run through the Avenue of the Giants and Pacific Coast Highway. We stopped in Placerville at a Mexican Restaurant called Tortilla Flats for a great lunch before heading on to Willits. Northern California riding is really great. From Willits we meandered over to Fort Bragg and up the coast through the Redwoods and into Grants Pass, OR for the night. The next morning we were off early to Crater Lake which is a must see if you are within a hundred miles. Beautiful lake but leaving we had to traverse 2 miles of loose gravel road due to construction. It was worth it to see the lake.

2016 Page 16 Back by Popular Demand...It s Dirty Bingo By Lynn Flournoy It ll be here before you know it Halloween has zipped right by, Thanksgiving and Christmas. And along with Christmas comes our very special N2 Christmas party. A fun part of that is Dirty Bingo. It s a great warm up to the gift swap and we all can sharpen our thievery skills. So as you pull out those decorations and outfits for the annual cool down, be sure to keep in mind things items that are new or gently used but not for some time and wrap them up for our game. Wrapping follows the Keep it Simple Rule: use gift wrap of any kind (Christmas, birthday, Easter, etc.); use the Sunday funnies or any other part of the newspaper. Please don t use ribbon or bows or other added decoration. Be sure to tape it securely as there will be some activity that could cause a less secure wrap to come lose. Box them if they are fragile or particularly small. It can get rough. One can use gift bags or even paper lunch bags but staple/tape them securely closed. Things get crazy for all of us this time of year but just keeping Dirty Bingo in the back of your mind will make this really pretty simple. I challenge everyone to participate by bringing a few goodies.

2016 Page 20 By Donita Nardi A Chilling Story This is a story to chill your bones. So pay close attention and put down your phones. A story that takes place deep in the night. The kind that can give you an awful fright. It was stormy and raining at a terrible rate. The lightning and wind made my heart race. And there in the fog, I saw it quite clear, A ghost ship float by, with no one to steer! The sails were all billowed because of the storm And I could tell by the holes that this wasn t the norm. As the ship floated by I could see through the hull That gerbil power fueled it that s far from dull! Behind the ship there were farm beasts afloat I saw 4 cows, a horse, 2 sheep and a goat! They were mooing and baying and made quite a racket As they floated right by me on a red leather jacket! I thought to myself that seems rather strange But then in the distance something else came in range. It s the size of three mountains and covered in sauces And I watch in amazement as it rocks and tosses The sugary goodness of a huge banana split Sprinkled with Goldwings and covered with whip! And just when I thought I d seen it all A clown rolls by balanced on a ball. In the sky was a blimp, and this made me weep As the sign on the side read, Have you seen my sheep? I yelled and I screamed but no one could hear To help them find the sheep they held so dear. From the clouds came a roar and it gave me a scare But some Harley s rode by as I tried not to stare. I waved as they passed and to my delight Some waved back! My what a sight! A small island washed by with palm trees and such With monkeys dressed in tutu s dancing too much! The lightning gave a clap and I woke with a start I was sweating and flush from the beat of my heart. What could cause these odd visions in my head? That s it! No more Ice cream before I go to bed!
