Iceland Trip Monday April 16, 2018 My parents picked us up and we went to the airport. We stopped in Seattle for a few hours and ate McDonalds and killed time before flying to Iceland. On the way to Iceland, over Greenland about here: I could faintly see the northern lights outside the plane window. After landing, we got driven to Hotel Holt in Reykjavik. The drive to Reykjavik seemed very similar to Idaho. The mountains were the same color of brown and there was lava rock on the ground. After we checked in, I was starving, so we had breakfast in the fancy dining room. It was perfect. Eggs, meat, and cheese really hit the spot. We were super tired at this point, but went out wandering around because we couldn t go to sleep yet. We went to Hallgrímskirkja, the huge church at the top of the city. We went to the top and got great views of Reykjavik. Then we wandered around the city some more like zombies, and went to a museum where they had found an original viking settlement from 1200 years ago. After this we were super tired, and went back to the hotel and took a nap. A few hours later, we woke up and went to eat dinner at the weird Pizza and Middle Eastern restaurant. It
was incredibly expensive, and we sat by the window and watched a tuxedo cat strolling through downtown, getting his picture taken and people petting him as they passed. After dinner, we wandered down to the ocean and walked around some of the boats docked in Reykjavik. Wednesday, April 18 We woke up pretty early and went on the South Coast tour. The first part of the tour was just driving south, and it poured rain the whole time. But as soon as we got out of the van, it stopped! The weather said we would get rained on the whole trip, but we barely got rained on at all. We stopped at a huge waterfall that I climbed to the top of with Dad. He didn t think he was going to make it but he did. Next, we went to the black sand beach at Vik. The waves were crashing so hard, and occasionally people not paying attention to the waves will get killed there by a sneaker wave. The Iceland legend is that the huge pillars of rock near the shore are goblins that turned to stone. We saw a guy get pelted by a wave, and we went out past a cliff. It was super cool past the cliff, but I was scared we would be trapped on the other side of it as the big waves came in and blocked us! We had to run for it to get back across! We ate super expensive sandwiches at the restaurant near the beach. Next we went to see some arches, Mom talked to a professional gambler the whole time about what to see in Las Vegas. There was a large, Bri arch, and a much smaller Phil arch in the distance.
Next, we went to a glacier at the base of Katla, the volcano. If Katla erupts, it will be extremely bad, as ice mixed with ash and lava will fill the sky. This happened with Eyjafjallajokull on a small scale, grounding airplanes across the northern hemisphere for a while. My mom said the word Eyjafjallajokull about a thousand times during the trip, very proud that she can pronounce it correctly. I was worried Kaylynn would have a hard time at the glacier since she hates ice so much, but it was surprisingly one of her favorite parts of the trip. Even though we walked on ice, it was covered in a layer of black rocks, I m guessing it came out of the volcano thousands of years ago. When we got up close to the ice, it was amazingly clear, we could see so far through the ice. My favorite part of the glacier was seeing the icebergs floating in a lake at the base. We ended the tour with another huge waterfall that we could walk behind. I read a rumor that there is viking treasure hidden behind
one waterfall in Iceland somewhere. Everyone who went all the way around the waterfall got pretty soaked. That night we went to a fancy Italian restaurant at the Hotel Borg. It was good, and super expensive like everything else in Iceland. Thursday April 19 The next day I was feeling sick with a sore throat, I m very thankful we didn t have another tour that day. Dad had to work, so we went with my mom to the Blue Lagoon. I was expecting something super hot like Lava Hot Springs, where I can only stay in the water for ten or fifteen minutes before I get too hot, but the Blue Lagoon wasn t nearly as hot. I stayed in for about an hour. Our tickets included a free drink, my mom chose a smoothie called Krap. For lunch we ate burgers accidentally covered in honey mustard sauce, it was not good. Friday April 20 I started to feel better the next day, and we went on another tour with the same company, this time our tour guide was named Baldwin. Baldwin turned out to be one of the best tour guides ever. He was interesting, nice, and kept vaping each time we would get out of the van. Our first stop was to look at some steam in the distance.
The landscape totally looks like southern Idaho with all the lava rock everywhere, except it rains so much in Iceland that it was all covered by a thick layer of moss. The wet Iceland look is better in my opinion, I think the dry Idaho lava-rock seems spidery. We kept going, and made another stop at an old volcano that collapsed, forming a small lake that we walked around. Next, we stopped at a short, wide waterfall. It was cool and there were no other tourists around which was cool too. Next, we went to Gulfoss, a massive waterfall. I was worried we would get soaked if we went too close, but it wasn t bad at all. The waterfall itself was huge, more like two waterfalls right in a row. There was no snow around, but the mist from the waterfall was freezing into a strange icy/snow substance around the falls. Next, we went to see Geysir, the original geyser that all other geysers were named from. It was at a small geyser basin. We quickly walked around it. The only real erupting geyser any more is called Strokkur. It goes off explosively every few minutes. There were some hot pools as well. Compared to a Yellowstone geyser basin, Iceland s is very small, but I m sure
the people were very excited to be there. We kind of felt like geyser snobs being there while having Yellowstone so close at home. We ate lunch at the restaurant near the geyser basin. I had a good minestrone soup. After lunch, we went to Thingvellir, home of Iceland s original viking parliament. It was kind of in the middle of nowhere, beyond a big lake, surrounded by walls of lava rock. We walked all around this, and stopped at one of our favorite waterfalls of the trip, made by the original vikings to get water close by to their parliament location. We went home and walked around downtown a little and went to a fancy Indian restaurant for dinner. After dinner, we wandered around downtown and went into a convenience store. They had a drink with the flavors Cherry and Blue.
Saturday April 21 We had nothing official planned for Saturday. We woke up and decided to go to Iceland s history museum, on the campus of the University of Iceland. We walked there, walking through a cemetery on the way there. We met a very friendly cemetery cat who let us pet him as we passed through. At the museum, we learned about the first people to come to Iceland. It was pretty interesting. Then we stopped for a snack at the university bookstore. Then we decided to walk to the Whale Museum. It was a pretty big walk through Reykjavik, and we stopped at a few Icelandic stores, just to see what they had for sale. We finally got to the Whale Museum, which was totally awesome. I thought there would be skeletons of whales on display, but it was almost entirely life-size replica whales. An audio guide told all about each one. My favorite fact was learning that some right whales live to be 200 years old, and they still find them swimming with 19th century harpoons stuck in their sides. The life-size whales were amazing, especially the sperm whale. I had no idea how huge they could be. The blue whale was impressive too.
After the Whale Museum, we walked to a ramen restaurant and had lunch. We were the only ones in there, and the interesting ramen chef explained that he was from Tibet, and escaped Tibet by climbing through Mt. Everest a long time ago. He was an interesting guy. That night, we walked around Reykjavik again. We ate a packed soup restaurant with bread bowls. Then we wandered around downtown. We took pictures near a modern-art viking ship statue. Then we went to the fancy performing arts center, before heading back to the hotel that night. Sunset was really late each night, after 9:00, and even around 11:00 PM it was still pretty bright outside.
Sunday April 22 We ate breakfast and walked around Reykjavik one more time before going to the airport. We flew to Seattle and had to run through the airport to get past customs and to our connecting flight. The flight home to Salt Lake had us fly directly over Mt. Rainier at sunset. It was incredible. I never realized how tall Mt. Rainier really was until flying over it, and all the small mountains surrounding it. It was a great trip.
