2015 Page 6 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Sharon Rainwater Duncan Finlayson visited our July Gathering and told us about the 2015 Nun Run schedule. If you have never participated with this event, I highly recommend giving it a try. It s a wonderful police escorted ride to Galveston with breakfast and lunch provided and all the funds go to providing medical services to children that probably wouldn t receive these medical services, if not for this charity event. Their kick-off party is August 12 at Stubbs Harley-Davidson and the ride is October 17. I hope it s been hot enough for you in July and that August is our cool down month for 2015, but I m not going to hold my breath. July was a great month for N2 and we had a lot of fun. Breakfast with N2 at Skeeter s, movie night Jumangi, Black Walnut Café breakfast ride to Conroe, Social Dinner at Black-eyed Pea hosted by the Rabalais, Straight Off The Road BBQ dinner ride, Chapter Gathering, Kountry Kitchen breakfast ride to Dayton, and a Blue Moon Ride. As Kenny Shults discussed in his Rider Ed presentation at the July Gathering on hypothermia was that you need to properly plan your rides. At this time of the year we normally try to schedule only morning or evening rides to miss the hottest time of the days. August will probably be very similar. I m looking forward to cooler days when we can plan to take longer rides. We have several suggested fullday rides that I m looking forward to scheduling when the temperatures allow us to safely ride all day. Currently we are working on the Fruitcake Overnight Ride on November 13. Just to change the scenery, I m looking at different routes for this ride to Corsicana and back. If you have any suggestions just let me know. There are a few more rallies scheduled this year, so let s ride and support them when possible. We are happy to announce that Steve and Billie Fleming have accepted the challenge and responsibilities of Assistant Region H Directors and we are excited to have them in this position! The appointment is effective 7/15/2015. As you know, Steve and Billie currently serve as Region H MEC s where they do a bang up job, and also as the Assistant Directors of Membership Enhancement for Gold Wing University. Please welcome Billie and Steve into this new adventure and please pass this along to your team members. Reba & Jim Berry Region H Director

2015 Page 7 NEWS FROM THE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS George & Linda Stich Gazpacho. A summertime favorite that's typically rich in tomatoes, cucumber, onion, bell pepper and garlic. Vichyssoise. This creamy French classic is made with pureed potatoes and leeks. To keep it on the healthful side, use low-fat, low-sodium chicken broth. For an even creamier soup, stir in a little plain low-fat yogurt or lowfat sour cream. Fruit soups. Strawberries, raspberries and cantaloupe puree nicely. See "Chilled melon soup" for a recipe to try. Frozen nibbles. Freeze grapes or berries. Grab them for a quick and cold snack. Hydration Tips and Ideas On behalf of United Healthcare (Shared by Linda Stich) Think hydration and you probably think water, the body's essential fluid. But did you know you can eat your H2O too? That's when you choose foods that are high in water content. For example, some varieties of fruit and veggies are more than 85 percent water. On hot days, these foods along with other fluids can help you stay hydrated. And there's a bonus: Water-rich fruits and veggies can also help replace key minerals (electrolytes) which your body sheds when you sweat. Enjoy a thirst-quenching menu. When the temperature rises, make a splash in your daily diet with these tasty ideas: Super salads. Watermelon, oranges, tomatoes, cantaloupe, berries, celery and cucumbers are all flush with fluid. These water-rich foods make great low-calorie snacks too! More hints on hydration: Perhaps you're wondering, How much water do I need? Maybe you've heard it should be eight glasses a day. Actually, there's no set amount that's right for everyone. Staying hydrated is important, though. So carry a refillable water bottle with you and sip from it throughout the day. Don't wait until you're thirsty. Bored with the same old water supply? Give it a twist with a wedge of lemon or lime or a splash of 100 percent fruit juice. Be sure to wash your water bottle daily. Remember, heat can be a hazard. To learn more about safety in hot weather, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov. You can also check the weather and heat index in your area and see heat advisories at weather.gov. In hot weather, do keep an especially close eye on older people, people with health conditions and young children and make sure they stay hydrated. They're at the highest risk of heat-related illness. Berry-delicious smoothies. Add berries fresh or frozen to low-fat or fat-free yogurt or milk. Puree in a blender. Summer salsas. These can be made from vegetables, fruits or a combination of both. Enjoy your favorite variety as a snack dip into it with cut-up veggies or wholegrain pita chips. Or top grilled fish or chicken with it. Have a sweet tooth? Give orange or pineapple salsa a try. Chilled soups. You can serve these as a light meal or as an appetizer or dessert. Here are three cool and soothing options: Healthy Mind Healthy Body provided by United Healthcare s Complimentary Newsletter 2015 United HealthCare Services, Inc., All rights reserved. 8 2015 Page 8 Chilled Melon Soup (submitted by Linda Stich) 1 large cantaloupe (or other melon or fruit) cut into small cubes (4-6 cups) 2 T. honey or to taste sliced fresh strawberries for garnish (optional) Juice of 3 limes or to taste ¼ c. whole fresh mint leaves Pinch of cardamon Fill a wide, shallow container with cantaloupe and place in microwave. Cook at 50% power for 2 minutes until melon softens slightly. Transfer cantaloupe to a blender or food processor. Add honey, lime juice, and cardamon and blend until smooth. Refrigerate until cold. Before serving, taste and adjust seasoning if necessary with more honey, cardamom, and/or lime juice. Garnish with strawberries and mint leaves. 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 8 oz. tub Cool Whip 1/2 gallon chocolate milk Easy Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream (recipe found on Pinterest.com and similar to a Wendy s frosty) First mix the sweetened condensed milk with the cool whip and about half of the chocolate milk (or whatever will fit into your bowl). Next, pour the mixture into your ice cream freezer, and fill the remaining chocolate milk to the fill line. (Ours fits 1/2 gallon just perfectly). Follow your ice cream freezer directions to finish the ice cream. Ours involves adding ice and rock salt every now and then while the ice melts down, and stops on its own. And when it s done Perfection. 9 2015 Page 9 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER EDUCATOR Kenny Shults Why is 10% a good target weight to be found on the tongue of your trailer? Well, let s assume that the fully loaded trailer weighs 300 pounds. That only puts 30 pounds of weight on the ball of your hitch if it is loaded as recommended. That does not change the dynamics of the bike enough to become unsafe. Any more then this and it could affect your ability to steer the bike. So with Wing Ding around the corner and great rides ahead, most of us will be pulling a trailer and we want to be as safe as possible. Please keep these ideas in mind as you load that trailer and head out into the great unknown. Hi everyone, It s already August and time for another newsletter article. This year seems to be flying by way to fast. We only have a few rallies left this year. So as we get ready for Wing Ding, there is one thing we often overlook and it is very important...how we pack our trailers. On long trips we very often pull a trailer and how that trailer is loaded makes a big difference on how your bike handles. Too much tongue weight takes the weight off the front wheel and giver you less steering ability. Too much weight to the rear of the trailer and the weight shifts off the rear wheel causing a skidding affect. A good rule of thumb is 10% of the weight of the loaded trailer should be on the tongue and the weight should be spread evenly from side to side. Don t stack too high on the top of the trailer because the higher the CG, the greater the weight transfer will be. Since we already know that your hitch is part of your motorcycle overhang, aft of the rear-wheel hub, that weight transfer is leveraged into greater weight on the rear tire and less weight on the front. That leverage can be PRO- FOUND! Load your trailer with as close to 10% of the total weight of the trailer and cargo on the tongue as you can estimate (Obviously, it does not have to be exact.) Place your heaviest cargo at the bottom of the trailer, as close to directly over your wheels as possible. If you are going to place anything on top of your trailer make sure it is LIGHT! Determine the weight distribution of your trailer while the tongue of the trailer is at the height it will be when connected to your bike. The longer the tongue, the less will be the weight transfer, all else being equal. If you are pulling a trailer, use it to store your cargo - empty your bike s luggage (saddlebags) as much as possible. Always take it easy for the first several miles of pulling a trailer so that you can learn the new handling characteristics of the bike.

2015 Page 10 MEC SPOTLIGHT Steve & Linda Seligman, (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) Master Tour Riders 6748 & 6747 I was rereading our chapter July newsletter again this morning. When I first receive the newsletter, I glance through it - sometimes too quickly - but eventually go back and take my time over a good cup of coffee. Well, that is what I did this morning. I reread Steve Fleming s article titled If You Bring It. They Will Come. I was thinking about the MECs responsibility and one of the biggest responsibilities to assist you with having FUN!!! Steve and I are working with the rest of your Chapter Staff to come up with new and different events. We are looking at rides to different places, new social events, and places to have fun. We are trying to concentrate more on rides as riding is what brought us together as a family. We are also planning those events that have become a Tradition for TX-N2 and we all look forward to each year. Sometimes it is hard for us in Texas to be able to ride during July and August because it is so hot. When your staff plans the monthly events, we are taking the weather conditions in consideration we plan those early morning rides so we are back before the heat of the day along with evening rides after the sun has set a little bit so it is cooler. But we need your help! YOU are the center of having FUN! Get it? Please do us a favor think about those rides you did years ago that you would like to revisit or borrow a ride from one of our sister chapters. Then, talk to any of your staff and we will work hard to get them on the calendar and done. Or if you see another chapter going on a ride that you think would be fun, let us know we always like a good Beevasion. Our chapter always has new members who have not been to places you have but would like to visit. Memories are great things, but sharing those memories is so much more FUN!!! See you next month for more FUN!!! MECs Rock!!!! ATGATT

2015 Page 11 NEWS FROM THE CAMPING COORDINATORS Rex & Ann Nix Our Granddaughter s First Ride with Grandpa One of the few things we get to do for our children is make memories. Not all memories are wonderful, but we do the best we can. When it comes to grandchildren, we have had lots of practice. So, last Father s Day, my daughter came to visit, and along with her were two granddaughters and a greatgranddaughter and a great-grandson. All were excited to come and play, but when we started looking at who was big enough and to fit on the back seat of the bike, one fit just right. Zoey is our daughter s third child and currently 9 years old. Her older brother and sister have already been riding with us until their lives started getting busy with life. Sunday, we took her out shopping at Cycle Gear for a helmet, riding jacket, gloves, goggles, and boots. We could not find boots and goggles to fit, so we got everything else. And, of course, a little 9 year old wanted to Pink Out, so why not. This was a special event. All fitted up, we showed her how to properly wear the helmet, what the jacket was about, and how it would help to keep her cooler in the summer and protect her if needed. After getting dressed to ride, she went to Grandma and ask which bike is the safest? I thought that was a special moment. She is already thinking of safety. Probably a good thing, hanging out with Grandpa. Grandma said they were both the same safe and she felt a lot better. After a few pictures, we took off for a short ride to take her home, about 12 miles. At first she seemed a little tense, but I could feel her getting more comfortable. About 4 miles from her home, I ask if she was ready to go home of if she wanted more. She enthusiastically said More. We got on the highway and rolled along at 55 to 60 for about 8 miles and I took an overpass going from the north Beltway 8 east bound to 59 north bound. That is a tall overpass and with no one behind us, I slowed down to about 40. That is when I brought her attention to the sunset. The sun had settled just above the horizon and with a heavy cloud bank it looked like the sky was on fire. That was cool. We made a U-turn, and I then took her home. So our little girl got her first ride in. When we arrived at her home, she ran in to show her mom the new outfit. As she took the helmet and jacket off, her mom said she would put it up and Zoey said no Momma, Grandpa has to keep that so when I go riding he will have it ready for me. Good girl. She is already asking when the next ride will be. Sometimes, it is just tough being a grandparent, but hey, those little hugs sure are special! Happy riding folks! Think about who you can make a special memory for. It might end up being for you, too. Rex & Ann

2015 Page 12 Spring Cleaning for Dirty Bingo By Lynn Flournoy For those who missed the chance to play Dirty Bingo at our last Christmas party; it s a fun game we all enjoyed. Some of us got some great treasures and some of us passed along items that others think are treasures. And some of the items will find their way back to the game this year I have no doubt. One thing for sure is, this bunch knows how to steal and those with the most experience showed the rest of us how. I mention all this now because as you do your Spring Cleaning, set aside a box or a bag to collect those things you were gifted in the past or was acquired as a door prize or bonus somewhere and never really used. These can be large or small, expensive or cheap, useful or not. If you decide to donate them to the party, wrap them in gift wrap of any kind (Christmas, birthday, Easter, etc.) without ribbon or bows or other added decoration. If one doesn't have gift wrap, use the Sunday funnies or any other part of the newspaper. Be sure to tape it securely as there will be some activity that could cause a less secure wrap to come lose. Box them if they are fragile or particularly small. It can get rough. One can use gift bags or even paper lunch bags but staple/tape them securely closed. We all get caught up in the busy-ness of the holiday season and some things just don t get done the way we would like so get a jump on this little project right now. 13 2015 Page 13 Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer Winger pals! So it s August and it s hot! In a few months it will be cold and you will be dreaming of warmer temperatures, but right now it s HOT! How hot is it you ask? Dog Days of Summer (Submitted by Donita Nardi) It s so hot I saw a dog chasing a cat the other day and they were both walking. It s so hot that hot water now comes out of both taps! It s so hot the chickens are laying hard boiled eggs! I bought some bread at the store the other day and by the time I got it home it was toast! You know it s hot out when your bike overheats before you start it up, and you discover that asphalt has a liquid state! Even though it s hot out, I still ride my bike to work every day, though I have to admit that I m more afraid of cooking to death on the pavement from a fall than I am of road rash. It s so hot I saw the squirrels in the back yard fanning their nuts! Last weekend we went to a hot air balloon festival at a park down the road, but the festival turned out to be a flop when the balloons wouldn t fly because the air outside the balloons was hotter than the air inside! The day wasn t a total loss though. It was a beautiful park with a lake in the center and that is where we found out that swans come in two varieties: original recipe and extra crispy! On the walk back to the car we saw three people spontaneously combust on the sidewalk! We walked past a fire hydrant and heard it whistling for a dog! That was weird When we got to the car we found out that seat belts can double as branding irons! My right thigh now belongs to Saturn. We stopped at a restaurant on the way home and they charged us a $20 upcharge for the air conditioning. You know it s hot when you re getting hot flashes and you re a man, when a scalding hot shower cools you down, and when a 95 degree day actually feels a little chilly. But there is an up-side to the heat. At least the politicians take their hands out of your pockets long enough to fan themselves. Here in Texas we have four seasons: tolerable, hot, really hot, and Are You Kidding Me?!?! Have a safe and wonderful August my winger pals!

2015 Page 16 Don t Be Afraid to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone. Sometimes we get comfortable with living in mediocrity and we don t want anything to change or be different in our little world. By challenging ourselves to go beyond that boundary of our comfort zone we find that there is a whole new world to explore and greater accomplishments to be had than we ever thought we could handle. In fact, we just might find that we have not only the capacity to learn new and exciting things but to excel in areas thought to be out of our reach. Have you tried to recruit a new member? Your next best friend could be around the corner or a new Chapter Director, Educator, Treasurer or MEC. Have you volunteered to help your Chapter in some way? Helped plan an event? How about participating in a talent show or other activity? These are often some of the things that hold people back from experiencing all the FUN that is available to the membership in GWRRA. Get out and get to a Rally and participate. There is fun to be had, especially when you pack your own and share! GWRRA is led by people just like you. Our leaders are members just like you too. They probably had to step out of their comfort zone to take on a new and challenging position. We can live above a life of mediocrity. We find our wings and fly just out side that comfort zone.
