I guess, as it gets closer to the end of the year the days become shorter so the months go by faster. Just two short months to our Christmas party. We combine our December meeting with the party so people do not have to reserve another day during the busy holiday season. We will have our usual white elephant gift exchange. More about the party and the rules for the exchange next month. This month s meeting will be on Oct 2 nd at 7:30 PM at Logan s Roadhouse. Come early for dinner. We had 10 people come out for our last lunch ride. We took the round about way to Camp Verde and a more direct route back to Len s house to do some minor work on a couple of bikes. The weather was beautiful (cool in the morning and warmer but not hot in the afternoon). The first day of fall did see the end of summer but I m not sure if we are though will all the hot weather yet. 2 Volume say that even motorcyclists who have been riding for most of their adult lives will encounter curves the likes as they have never seen on the Blue Ridge Parkway and other national park roads. That is why even the slightest distraction or looking off at the scenery at the wrong time can result in disaster. Rider Education Fall Motorcycle Safety Tips The Park Rangers on the Blue Ridge Parkway conducted analysis of motorcycle wrecks and identified specific areas where accidents were regularly occurring. An example would be south bound at milepost 36 in Virginia where eight motorcycle crashes occurred in one year. At these locations large and more "aggressive" warning signs were placed directed toward motorcycles. Following the placement of the signs there were no motorcycle crashes at milepost 36 for two years. Due to the fall color season October is the month of highest visitation on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is also the month with the highest number of motor vehicle crashes. Every year a large proportion of those crashes involve motorcycles. Research has shown that most of these crashes involve large touring type bikes and experienced riders. So what is it about the Blue Ridge Parkway that results in significant motorcycle wrecks? The Blue Ridge Parkway was designed in the 1930s and 40s by engineers and landscape architects for slow moving scenic travel by motorcar. One of the elements incorporated into the design were descending radius curves. These were utilized to maximize the beauty of the land while hugging the contour of the mountains. These types of curves are not used in modern highway construction. It is safe to One theory behind the number of crashes involving large touring style motorcycles is their design with a wide bottom or base of the frame. As motorcyclists enter these deceiving curves they tend to over correct and catch their foot pegs on the pavement. This common factor in many wrecks then causes the motorcycle to spin out of control. Despite the new signs and an aggressive education program, motorcycle wrecks are still occurring in the park at an alarming level. The Blue Ridge Parkway is often referred to as one of the best roads in the world to tour by motorcycle. I do not doubt that is true. Motorcyclists need to be aware that they are traveling on a road surface that may include challenges they have not seen before. They need to watch both their speed and full attention to controlling their bikes down the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway so they can return home safely.

3 Volume By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: Hard to believe that everything we do can be distilled into one paragraph from the Officer Handbook. Put-ting that paragraph into actions is where all of the FUN happens. The more you know, the better it gets! Jack Wagner Region H Trainer Statement of Purpose or Why Are We Here? Every organization or business should have a mission statement as well as a statement of purpose. While being similar, they are different. A mission statement should answer the question 'what do we do and who do we do it for? The statement of purpose answers the question 'why do we do what we do? The statement of purpose contained in the Officer Handbook includes pieces of the mission and sums it up very succinctly to answer the questions of 'what do we do and for whom' as well as 'why we do it'. GWRRA is an informal educational, social organization of proud, unique and special people Gold Wing Owners. It was formed for people to exchange ideas, share safety information relating to motorcycling and motorcyclists, educate the non-motorcycling public concerning motorcycling problems and participate in impromptu rides. In addition, it supports the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and assists all motorcyclists in achieving and/or improving public acceptance of motorcyclists. GWRRA is a family-oriented organization, without political or religious affiliations or influence and supports civic, local, police, charity, and government organizations. GWRRA publishes and distributes Wing World and other media that will inform, educate, entertain and enlighten our Members and Officers. A duck walks into a bar and asks, "Got any grapes?" The bartender, confused, tells the duck no. The duck thanks him and leaves. The next day, the duck returns and asks, "Got any grapes?" Again, the bartender tells him, "No -- the bar does not serve grapes, has never served grapes and, furthermore, will never serve grapes." The duck thanks him and leaves. The next day, the duck returns, but before he can say anything, the bartender yells, "Listen, duck! This is a bar! We do not serve grapes! If you ask for grapes again, I will nail your stupid duck beak to the bar!" The duck is silent for a moment, and then asks, "Got any nails?" Confused, the bartender says no. "Good!" says the duck. "Got any grapes?"

She went back to find out what was going on. He was quite embarrassed and whispered that he had just recently been circumcised and he was quite itchy. The teacher told him to go down to the principal's office. He was to telephone his mother and ask her what he should do about it. He did and returned to his class. Suddenly, there was a commotion at the back of the room. She went back to investigate only to find him sitting at his desk with his "private part" hanging out. "I thought I told you to call your mom!" she said. "I did," he said, "And she told me that if I could stick it out till noon, she'd come and pick me up from school.

7 Volume REGION H NEWS Website: Bill & Dea Ann Gray cell Region H Director, GWRRA Operation H - No Winger Left Behind! GOLD WING RESTAURANT REVIEW ASSOCIATION We ve all heard it! We laugh about it! As I look at chapter calendars around the Region, we seem to live it! It s been said that some groups ride from bar to bar, while Gold Wingers ride from Braum s to Braum s. Most chapters plan dinner rides weekly. After a while, members start to pick and choose their rides based on the restaurant. Does that sound familiar? How many of you have planned a dinner ride to a restaurant thirty minutes from your gathering place? Let s think about this Is your priority the restaurant or the ride? Some old timers told me a while back that it was nothing to jump on the bike in Tulsa and have lunch in Amarillo, TX. They would have dinner in Wichita, Kansas and be home by 10pm. Now THAT was a dinner ride!! NO, IT WAS A RIDE THAT INCLUDED DINNER! We have members drop out of chapters and GWRRA altogether because the chapter does not ride enough! Maybe we need more rides that include dinner! I suggest that during your next planning meeting, think about roads to ride and places to see rather than what restaurant to eat in. Put some food in a cooler and have a picnic somewhere along the way. GOLD WING RESTAURANT REVIEW ASSOCIATION? No, it s GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION!! Let s Ride!! Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road? Isaac Newton: Chickens at rest tend to stay at rest, chickens in motion tend to cross roads. Darwin: Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally selected in such a way that they are now genetically dispositioned to cross roads. Albert Einstein: Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road moved beneath the chicken depends upon your frame of reference. Oliver Stone: The question is not "Why did the chicken cross the road? But is rather, "Who was crossing the road at the same time, whom we overlooked in our haste to observe the chicken crossing?" Freud: The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity. Heisenberg: Because the chicken is moving very fast, you can either observe the chicken or you can measure its speed, but you cannot do both. Jean Foucault: It didn t. The rotation of the earth made it appear to cross. Galileo: To get a better look at the stars. Ohm: There was more resistance on this side of the road. Pascal: It was pressured to cross the road. Volta: The other side had more potential.
