Weather wise this trip was completely different from the one we took in the spring to Key West. That trip we started the first day with rain but from then on no rain for the rest of the trip. This one we started with a clear sunny day but that was the only completely dry day for the rest of the trip. It rained at least some every other day of the trip. Some days it rained all day long. I wore my rain suit more these last three weeks than I did the last three years. A couple of us bought new rain suits at Wing Ding because we wore the old ones out. When we weren t contending with the rain it was fog that was giving us trouble. We did have some nice weather thrown in so it was not all bad. Come to our meeting on Saturday and hear about the trip and see some pictures. The meeting will be on July13 at 1:00 PM at Logan s Roadhouse. Come around noon for lunch. This will be a short newsletter since I do not have a lot of time to prepare it before the meeting and nobody has sent me any articles (hint, hint). 2 Volume Ride Safe, Ride Often Bruce MacMaster Rider Education Tips for Riding Motorcycles in the Heat By Jason Quigley Summer days are upon us and the triple digits aren t far away. When riding in the hot weather, it is essential to protect yourself from heat exhaustion. Our tips may not keep you cool, but they will keep heat exhaustion at bay. Insulate Wait, what? Yeah it s hot and the natural instinct is to peel the layers off, but that would be the wrong move. When riding a motorcycle, it s always important to consider protection and believe it or not, those layers will protect your body from the heat. If the temperature outside is under your body temp, it makes sense to open the jacket vents or wear a mesh jacket. If the temperature is higher, keep the layers on and the vents shut. This will keep out the heat billowing off the roadways and engine. So insulated boots, a jacket, riding gloves and a helmet, preferably with visor, are a must. Bandannas do dry out quickly, so keep a water bottle nearby to douse the bandanna regularly. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate We cannot emphasize this enough. In extreme weather it is essential to drink large amounts of water. Consider carrying a water bladder with drinking tube for easy consumption while riding. If caught unprepared, stop off at any grocery store or convenience store; almost all carry chilled filtered bottled water. Sports drinks and sodas will do in a pinch, but we encourage plain water for best hydration. Avoid alcohol, it encourages dehydration as well as impairs judgment. Rest Often If you feel too hot or feel light headed, pull over and rest. Just a few minutes in the shade with a cool drink will do wonders for your body. Consider stopping every hour, especially if you aren t carrying water. Heat exhaustion will sneak up on you and it s easy to think you can go a few more miles, but in this instance it s better to err on the side of caution. Adjust Your Schedule Consider leaving earlier and returning later to miss the heat of the day. If you re not confidant riding in the heat, don t do so. Evaporative Cooling This tip doesn t work so well in humid climates, but for dryer areas, it can mean a world of difference. Wearing a bandanna around your neck soaked in water helps cool the body.

3 Volume 32-3 IN MEMORIAL: FELIPE AND ROSE MARTINEZ Felipe and Rose Martinez, 19-year members of GWRRA and participants of Texas Chapter H, died in a one-vehicle accident on the way back from Nova Scotia and Wing Ding on July 5, They were traveling alone so the exact cause of the accident is not known at this time. They were on IH20 in Georgia about 5 miles from the Alabama State line. They died doing something they loved, riding their trike and visiting different parts of the country. Rose was very brave on this trip as she went on a whale watching tour and rode to the top of Mt. Washington even though she was afraid of water and heights. They were a wonderful fun loving couple who will be missed by all who knew them. Please keep their family in you thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Any written thoughts, memories, pictures etc. can be sent to: The Felipe and Rose Family 511 Barbuda St. San Antonio, TX 78227

4 Volume By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: Page 21 Raise Your Right Hand and Repeat After Me This month will be devoted to the Oath of Office. The Oath of Office should be administered to all incoming officers at the Chapter Gathering or other official Chapter event. In the case of District/Region Officers, it should be done during the annual convention (rally) or other major District/Region event. It should be done with great ceremony and its importance not minimized. The Oath of Office serves to formalize what the Officer has agreed to in signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Standing in front of the Chapter and verbalizing their commitment helps to solidify and seal that commitment as well as instill pride in the Officer. Following is the entire Oath of Office. To serve the Members, for whom I am responsible, in a manner befitting the Office; To assist my Senior Officers in the execution of their duties and responsibilities; To promote and support my Peers in a team atmosphere, working together for the benefit of the whole; To support all Divisions of the Association; To be positive in attitude and spirit; To lead by example while promoting an atmosphere of fun, safety and knowledge To provide a succession of leadership for my office; I further pledge, during my term of office, to serve with pride and devotion, while upholding the highest traditions and core values of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. The more you know and the more you do, the better it gets. Jack Wagner Region H Trainer GWRRA Oath of Office As an Officer and Volunteer Leader of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, I will do my best: To serve the Association by providing for its Members, in accordance with the Officer Handbook;

If there is a discrepancy between the newsletter and what is published on the web site, the web site will take precedence. Confusing Thoughts If a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong? If a deaf person swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap? LETTER FROM THE EDITOR We are looking for the right person to fill this position. If you are interested please see me. Bruce MacMaster - Interim Newsletter Editor If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation? Is there another word for synonym? Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice?" When you open a bag of cotton balls, is the top one meant to be removed? Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?"

9 Volume Government Pipe Specifications 1. All pipe is to be made of a long hole, surrounded by metal or plastic centered around the hole. 2. All pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire length - do not use holes of different length than the pipe. 3. The I.D. (Inside diameter) of all pipe must not exceed the O.D. (Outside diameter) - otherwise the hole will be on the outside. 4. All pipe is to be supplied with nothing in the hole so that water, steam or other stuff can be put inside at a later date. 5. All pipe should be supplied without rust - this can be more readily applied at the job site. N.B. Some Vendors are now able to supply pre-rusted pipe. If available in your area, this product is recommended, as it will save a lot of time on the job site. 6. All pipe over 500 ft (153m) in length should have the words "long pipe" clearly painted on each end, so the Contractor will know it is a long pipe. 7. Pipe over 2 miles (3.2 km) in length must have the words "very long pipe" painted in the middle, so the Contractor will not have to walk the entire length of the pipe to determine whether or not it is a long pipe or a very long pipe. 8. All pipe over 6" (152 mm) in diameter must have the words "large pipe" painted on it, so the Contractor will not mistake it for small pipe. 9. Flanges must be used on all pipe. Flanges must have holes for bolts quite separate from the big hole in the middle. 10. When ordering 90 degrees, 45 degrees or 30 degrees elbow, be sure to specify right hand or left hand; otherwise you will end up going the wrong way. 11. Be sure to specify to your vendor whether you want level, uphill or downhill pipe. If you use downhill pipe for going uphill, the water will flow the wrong way. 12. All couplings should have either right hand or left hand thread, but do not mix the threads - otherwise, as the coupling is being screwed on one pipe, it is unscrewed from the other.
