The musement Park 1 erek was turning eight on Saturday, and his parents had promised to take him to the amusement park. erek had heard about the amusement park rides from the other kids at school. His friend, Nicholas, had told everyone that he rode every ride at the park and was never afraid. Salvatore said the roller coaster scared him, but he rode it anyway. Even Isabella, the quietest girl in erek s class, had been to the amusement park and rode some of the rides. Everyone talked about how much fun they had at the park. erek was the last one in the class to go. He was so excited. He could not wait for Saturday to arrive! 2 erek had a hard time sleeping on Friday night. Normally his parents had to wake him up each morning. ut this Saturday, he was dressed and ready to go when his dad opened the bedroom door. erek grabbed his dad s hand and pulled him to the front door. Let s go, ad, he said. 3 Slow down, we have to wait on your mom. She is cooking breakfast, his dad said chuckling. 4 o we have to eat at home? an we eat at the park? erek asked. 5 ad laughed and said that the tickets into the park cost a lot of money. They would save some money by eating at home. erek was too excited to eat much. He played with his eggs and nibbled his toast. Finally, his parents were ready to go. opyright 2006 Region IV ES 03 Reading FM 2 Oct 09 Page 1
2 Form 6 s soon as they got to the park, erek began to feel nervous. He began to worry that he was not tall enough to get on some of the rides. fter all, he was the shortest one in his class. Even Isabella was taller than he was. erek began to make excuses not to go on the rides. He asked, an we go look at the things in the gift shop? ad laughed and said, I have been listening to you talk about the rides all week. We did not come here to look at gifts. 7 erek thought of another way he might avoid going on the rides. Mom, I m hungry. an we get something to eat? he whined. Mom just shook her head and said that he should have eaten his breakfast at home. 8 erek was so nervous that his stomach began to hurt. The closer his parents and he got to the roller coaster ride, the harder he squeezed his dad s hand. ad just squeezed his hand back and smiled. Finally, erek told his dad that he needed to talk to him. ad knelt down by erek and said, What s wrong, son? 9 I m afraid I m too short to ride on the roller coaster. What if I can t get on it? Everyone at school will make fun of me, erek explained. 10 ad grinned and grabbed erek by the hand. They walked over to the gift shop, and ad bought a tall baseball cap for erek. Here, put this on your head but do not pull it down all the way. It will make you look taller, ad said as he winked at erek. opyright 2006 Region IV ES 03 Reading FM 2 Oct 09 Page 2
3 Form 11 erek and his parents walked to the roller coaster. They stood in a long line. erek was still very nervous, but he felt ad s hand on his shoulder and saw Mom smile at him. Everything was going to be all right! s they walked up to the ride, the man at the gate looked at erek and smiled. erek slowly walked past the sign that had an arrow on it. The sign said, You have to be this TLL to ride this ride. With each step erek expected someone to stop him, but no one did. He began to get excited. He had made it! s erek climbed into the roller coaster s car, he began to wish he had not been tall enough to ride on it. Now, he was really scared! Oh, no. The ride was starting! opyright 2006 Region IV ES 03 Reading FM 2 Oct 09 Page 3
