2016 Page 6 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Sharon Rainwater You had a sink with a mirror, shower, bench, and a toilet all in one room. The bathrooms were also heated and air conditioned. November is here and the holiday season is upon us, again. October was another great month with the Nun Run, breakfast at Simply Kountry, lunch at Burger Fresh, N2 30 th birthday party, Social Dinner at El Ranchero, the Region H Fall Foliage ride in Arkansas, camping at Lake Ouachita State Park, and monthly Gathering with Halloween snacks afterwards. When motorcycle camping, we always seem to draw attention and questions from a lot of people about the bikes, trikes, and campers. We always seem to spend some time discussing the pros and cons of different types of motorcycles and trikes, but we spend more time showing off our campers. We had three Aspen Classic campers on this trip and again we had a lot of questions and looky-loos. After a lot of discussion with the state park ranger, we now know that we need to be describing our campers as motorcycle tents when reserving spaces, especially in Arkansas, to be able to put two campers on one site. This saves us half the price, by putting two campers on one spot and senior rates (over 62) save us another 25%, again in Arkansas State Parks. We are hoping, that before long, with all the discounts that the state of Arkansas will be paying us to camp at their parks. The Lake Ouachita State Park had recently added new bathrooms, which were very nice. These new bathrooms can be used by either sex and have everything in one room, with a lock on the door that locks from the inside. Meals are always interesting and you never know what our ladies will come up with next. On this trip, we had Mummy Dogs (hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls and cooked over an open fire) and mac & cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, and tomato soup. Of course, s mores were made during movie intermission. Speaking of movies, we received a visit from the state park ranger one evening just after 10:00 p.m., reminding us of the 10:00 p.m. quiet time. He also stated that it was too bad as he really liked the movie that we were watching The Bucket List. As we were headed home, we drove by several more Arkansas state parks that everyone said we needed to try that one next. Arkansas does have a lot of state parks along with Corp of Engineers facilities that are awaiting our arrival. Who wants to go on our next adventure? We are already planning other camping trips which will include other camping options, for those non-campers. Happy Holidays to you and yours and we hope to see you at one or all of our November events. Remember BEE SEEN IN Words of Wisdom Submitted by Linda Stich Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. By Ralph Waldo Emerson

2016 Page 8 EXPERIENCE ARKANSAS By Linda Stich The Arkansas Fall Foliage Ride was awesome thanks to the Region H organizers, Steve and Billing Flemming and their team. We appreciate the time and effort everyone contributed to make this a great ride. All of the fall colors had not appeared as of yet, but that did not deter us from having a good time. I was very non-committal when it came to deciding whether I would go on the ride to see the foliage and whether I would extend the ride to camping with other N2 members. In the end, I decided to do both. Randy graciously checked my trike out to make sure it was road worthy. I also had to check out my tent to see if it was suitable. I hadn t ever pulled a trailer so that is where I had my apprehension. I decided to take the cargo trailer and tent camp. The camping at Lake Ouachita State Park was awesome too. It was hard to sleep some nights, when all I could hear were the night noises. I would lay there for 2-3 hours just listening. You could see the stars so clearly. The park was great and the lake amazing. It was so peaceful there. There were seven of us camping and I m sure they had a marvelous time also. The four ladies...linda, Sharon, Donna and myself, explored some cabins in anticipation of another trip to that area. One funny incident was when we were going to our camp and there was a steep hill to get there. I started up the hill, stopped, and told Steve and Linda as they pulled up beside me that I couldn t make it up the hill and laughing while I said it. They encouraged me and I did make it up to the top. Randy was leading our adventurous group of 9 from Kingwood to the Baymont Inn overlooking Lake Hamilton in Arkansas. The same group headed out the next morning on the route suggested by Region H. I was looking to expand my experience of driving a trike and I believe this week exceeded my expectations. Not only was this the longest trip I had ever driven, approx miles, but it was by far the most audacious trip I had ever attempted. The curves, twists, sharp turns, steep hills, etc. were all challenging. I appreciate our amazing chapter and how they take care of a novice in view of the breathtaking routes that we rode for five days. Everyone was patient with me and I rode my own ride even if I was a little slow at times. Thanks Steve Seligman for being the drag and tolerant of my nervousness. I can t say I won t have any anxiety on the next trip, but I will be better prepared for the journey! Thanks guys and gals! You were fantastic and I am grateful for the encouragement you gave me! NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE RIDE DAY By Linda Stich Did you know that October 8 th was National Motorcycle Ride Day? I didn t. It s the second Saturday in October. I found out through an Advance Auto Parts ad. On their Facebook page, they asked riders about their favorite routes and pictures. Some of the routes were Black Hills, Million Dollar Hwy, Tail of the Dragon, Moonshiner 28, Natchez Trace and the route from the 1969 Easy Rider movie. For those who shared photos they picked four entries to receive a $25 gift card. Most, if not all, of the pictures submitted were from Harley Riders. Maybe next year some of our GWRRA members can submit their best routes and pictures. I m sure we could come up with some awesome pictures. Chapter N-2 did take advantage of this day and had breakfast at Moss Hill. There were six of us in attendance. Breakfast was good as always. The day was great and Randy lead us through back roads leading back to Cleveland. Robin Smith was a good sport and took me up on my offer to ride as a passenger on the trike with me driving. We made it back with all body parts intact. Thanks Robin! Overall it was a great day and pleasant ride.

2016 Page 9 NEWS FROM THE CHAPTER EDUCATOR Kenny Shults face is cold, it makes it hard to think about anything else. Get good quality winter gloves and wear warm wool socks to keep your fingers and toes from going numb. There are several products out there for your head and face; but make sure they fit properly and don t block your view. Hello my friends, It s November already and the cold weather is about to set in. So, I thought I would give you some food for thought. Cold weather means some of us just don t ride i.e., Diane, while others are ok with it. Now we all know a warm rider is far safer than one who is frozen solid in the winter chill. Wind chill factors are hard to calculate, but we need to think about this when we chose to ride. Being too cold can lead to shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness, low energy, slow reaction times, and stiff and sore joints. None of these are good for a rider to stay safe. There s cold and then there is bitterly cold with black ice and other dangers. A little bit of cold can be invigorating, but prolonged bitter cold is dangerous and could even lead to frost bite. So here are a few things to think about before the cold gets here. GEAR UP - Today s riding gear features materials that keep you warm without having to be extra bulky. Good quality gear is usually warmer then leather but remember you get what you pay for. A nice leather jacket may cut the wind, but the leather can gets cold and stiff. Make sure the sleeves, neck, and ankles can be closed tightly to stop the wind. A neck warmer is a good addition to stop that sneaky breeze down your back. HANDS, FEET and FACE - You could wear the warmest jacket and pants to keep your body warm but if your extremities are cold you will still feel like you are freezing. Cold hands and feet mean it is harder to use your controls and this make you dangerous. Also when your BIKE MODS - If you want to invest a little money, heated grips, heated seats, and foot warmers are an option. Goldwings come well equipped to block the wind but other bikes might need to add a wind shield. There are a lot of wind guards for all kinds of bike so look for what works for you. STOP OFTEN - We can all brave a quick ride home in near freezing temperatures, but a long ride in finger and toe numbing weather is very dangerous to you and others. Stop frequently out of the cold and let your body warm up. You could find a public toilet with hand blow dryers which will quickly thaw out your fingers. Maybe just pull over and move around to get your blood pumping. HYDRATE - When we are cold, we don t feel as thirsty as when we are hot, so there is a tendency to not drink enough. Just like in hot weather it is important to hydrate. The more we stay hydrated, the clearer we think and less fatigue we experience. ALCOHOL and COFFEE - We may think they go down nice and warm and make you feel all warm inside; but in reality they will increase blood flow to the skin causing us to lose body heat. It is a sort term effect of warmth that makes you even colder in the end. Most GWRRA members wouldn t drink alcohol and ride anyway but it should be avoided in cold weather. I did read however spicy foods do warm the body or spicy wives. Stay safe my friends.

2016 Page 10 MEC SPOTLIGHT Steve & Linda Seligman, (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) Master Tour Riders 6748 & 6747 I have noticed that some members join GWRRA, then for some reason (financial or health) drop out of GWRRA but then some of them come back!!! Life is funny we can never tell what is coming at us down the road. When we join GWRRA, we expect and hope that the membership will be for life; then unfortunately life happens. People get ill, have financial issues, or find something else they enjoy more than their motorcycles (I know it is unbelievable) but it happens. So, they have to let their GWRRA membership lapse. Then, sometimes down the road the circumstances change their health improves, finances improve, or they realize they cannot live without their motorcycles (Yeah!!!). So, they joins GWRRA again. I have seen this happen during the 11 years Steve and I have been GWRRA members. What is impressive is that even those members that have let their GWRRA membership lapse, we still treat them as friends and family. We are still there for each other, help them through the tough times, and continue to support them. Then one day they become members again!!! This is so exciting. This exemplifies the GWRRA motto - Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Always friends no matter what the circumstances members or not members. NEWS FROM THE 2016 COUPLE OF THE YEAR Steve & Linda Seligman Steve and I just returned from a week in Arkansas. We began the week by participating in the first Annual Region H Fall Foliage Ride. On Friday, October 21, Steve and I along with Randy and Sharon Rainwater, Linda Stich, Rex and Ann Nix, and Guyland and Missy Roberts headed to Hot Spring, AR. The N2 group stopped in Livingston for breakfast at The Whistle Stop. Once our tummies were full, we continued the ride to Hot Springs the beginning point of the Fall Foliage ride. We arrived to many bikes in the parking lot of the Baymont Inn. The weather was cool and it had been a great ride. You could feel and hear the excitement of the Region H members. After checking into our rooms, all of the Region H members gathered into the conference room for some instructions for the following day, a 50/50, and of course Door Prizes!!! Saturday morning everyone got ready for the day s ride to The Hub in Marble Falls. This morning was a little cooler than Friday, so everyone was bundled up and looking forward to the great Arkansas roads, beautiful scenery, and, even better, fellowship. Randy led the N2 family from Hot Springs to Marble Falls. Again, another beautiful day of riding. The Hub is a small hotel geared to motorcyclists. It also has a restaurant famous for its steaks. The food was good and a good time was had by all. Then Randy and Sharon Rainwater, Linda Stich, Marty and Donna Uphoff, and Steve and I headed back to Hot Springs for four nights of camping at Lake Ouachita State Park. Again, the weather was awesome cool in the morning and evenings and very enjoyable during the day. Lake Ouachita is beautiful! We rode a little on Monday and Tuesday then on Wednesday decided to stay at camp to relax and enjoy the park. It was a very enjoyable few days of camping. Then, of course, we had to head home. All in all it was a great week. We are looking forward to our next adventure! Q: What is the difference between a chicken and a turkey? A: Chickens celebrate Thanksgiving!!! Read more at

2016 Page 15 AS YOU ARE DECORATING... By Lynn Flournoy As you are decorating for Thanksgiving and then Christmas, take a look at things you might not really want any more and prepare them for Dirty Bingo. It ll be here before you know it. I know you are all preparing for the thievery that is our traditional gift swap and Dirty Bingo is the best warm up for just that. Wrapping follows the Keep it Simple Rule: use gift wrap of any kind (Christmas, birthday, Easter, etc.); use the Sunday funnies or any other part of the newspaper. Please don t use ribbon or bows or other added decoration. Be sure to tape it securely as there will be some activity that could cause a less secure wrap to come lose. Box them if they are fragile or particularly small. It can get rough. One can use gift bags or even paper lunch bags but staple/tape them securely closed. Things get crazy for all of us this time of year but just keeping Dirty Bingo in the back of your mind will make this really pretty simple. I challenge everyone to participate by bringing a few goodies. I have a tub full already.
