2 A word from our President, Carl Overmyer.. Carl s Comments It is finally summer time, which means it is the season for 4-H fairs, tractor pulls, antique tractor shows, parades, and watching the crops grow! In our area the corn and soybeans look to be off to a great start. Unfortunately, not too far away from us farmers have been dealing with both areas too dry to the southwest and far too wet to our north. They have had a tough time finishing planting but mostly everything seems to be in the ground now, with the exception of the coming wheat harvest and double crops. The next major project on our farm is putting up a new wet grain leg at one of our drying set-ups. So far we have removed a couple trees for the guide wires and built forms for all the new cement. Next, we will be updating the electrical service to handle the new phase converter and relocating the pit once the new leg is installed. This is all planned to be done, (fingers crossed), before the beginning of harvest. My latest shop project is an older ditch witch machine that I bought with the plans of burying the new electrical lines at the new grain leg. It had been sitting for close to ten years so the engine had seized. So far we have it turning over and all the valves free so it should be running and operating shortly! I would like to remind everyone that the Red Power Review is August 31 st through September 2 nd in Hesston, Indiana. I am looking forward to all your show items and seeing you all at the member meeting! And one last reminder is the National IH auction at Polk s auction site at the junction of US 6 and US will be here before we know it so plan to start advertising your auction items early. Chapter #33 Summer Picnic The IH Chapter 33 summer picnic and membership meeting will be Saturday, August 4 th at 11:30EST meeting/12:30 EST. lunch, at the Tom and Karen McCormick residence and new shop (Tom s Doghouse), located at Sycamore Rd., North Liberty, IN Bring a chair and a dish or two to share. Pulled Pork, table service, and drinks will be provided. They hope to have all their IH tractors and implements on display. The event is come rain or shine as the event will be under cover in the shop. There will be kid s activities as well. Directions: Take State Rd 4 west off of 31 approx 9 miles to Sycamore Rd., and go South 1/2 mi. Chapter #33 Red Power Review The Chapter #33 Red Power Review for 2018 will take place at the LaPorte County Historical Steam Society Annual Show, located in Hesston, IN. Contact Jerry Smoker if you plan to exhibit at the summer show in Hesston. We need a number of people with families attending the exhibitor s meal on Saturday, September 1st at the show. You need to bring an exhibit to attend this free event. Please call Jerry Smoker at and leave message before August 25th to make your reservation. 6 Recipe of the Month: Tennessee Fire Crackers (Derrick Foreman) 1 lb. box saltine crackers 1 ½ C. canola oil (use only canola oil) 4 tsp. crushed red pepper 1 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 pouch Hidden Valley Ranch dressing Stand crackers up in a sealable container. Mix all ingredients together well. Pour the mixture over the crackers and seal the container. Let stand for two hours, turning the container every 30 minutes. Something Different At Red Power -- By Donna Hoover This year at Red Power, there was something different for the ladies to do. They made blankets for a battered women s shelter in Montgomery. We took fleece fabric and made a blanket. Up here in the snow belt, you take two layers of fleece and cut fringe and tie them both together. Down there, because it does not get that cold, you just make a single layer blanket. We cut the fringe and tied a knot on each fringe. The next day, we made care packages for the shelter. Each packaged contained a towel, socks, nightgown, washcloth, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary napkins and Chap-Stick. I felt it was a worthwhile project and the few women who helped said the same thing. These items were presented to a representative from the shelter at the National Meeting on Saturday. I did not stay for the meeting but knowing that I helped some battered women get the basic necessities they need when leaving an abusive home made me feel good.
