President s Message Fall 2014 Tracy says she only needs a few paragraphs, and I m struggling with how to capture everything since August in only a few paragraphs. We had a few region members meet and venture down to a fun filled day at Rough and Tumble and then there was Hershey and the Hangover III. What can I say??? We had a lot of fun!!! The weather at Hershey was a lot drier this year and we got to see a lot of Horseless Carriages on the flea market field, the high wheeler run in and on the show field on Saturday. Then there was the Hangover. It started out chilly, but everyone had a great time visiting the Jack Rich Collection, Golden Age Museum and The Amish Experience. Of course everyone also enjoyed the Good Humor man that arrived at Golden Age to give us our much anticipated ice cream stop. Almost all the cars completed a challenging but enjoyable two days. Thanks to Bob Ladd and John McAnlis for pulling this together. We had a nice little November business meeting in our garage on Sunday the second, a venue move due to the sudden death of Richard Reinhold Sr. We had a very nice parade of antique cars for his funeral procession. We will be back at Reinholds Restorations for the March meeting and to plan out the 2015 activities. Don t forget to vote for national HCCA board members and pay your national dues. One thing that was decided in a brief SVR Board meeting after the business meeting was to reduce the 2015 dues as a result of our profits from the Reliability and Hangover. Tracy, the boys and I want to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year and don t forget to check your antifreeze as they are already talking about the polar vortex!!! Happy Cranking, Jeff From your Editor... I would like to thank Clay Green and Bob Ladd for contributing to this newsletter. Their articles are greatly appreciated! Any member is more than welcome to submit technical information and articles. Since the next newsletter will be late winter, I am looking for a technical article related to prepping your brass vehicle for the spring touring the season. -Tracy 4

HCCA National News HCCA IRS Tax Status It s official On August 18, 2014, the Horseless Carriage Club of America received a letter from the IRS officially stating that our tax exempt status is 501(c)(7). Years of planning and effort have come to closure. For the full definition of the tax exempt status 501(c)(7), you should go to IRS.gov. HCCA Web Site Changes - Have you noticed the changes on the HCCA web site HCCA Tour Library (New) - In order to promote, assist and honor the work that goes into putting on tour events, a decision was made to create a location where members can view past tours (who and where they were put on) and find guides to help people on how to plan an event Though the new resource is initially just a hand full of tours (30+), there will be a continued effort to add additional tours and establish a procedure for submission of new tours. Web Site Menus The old menus on the HCCA site would occasionally bounce up and down when a mouse was moved over them. The issue has been fixed. There will be a continued effort to make the site more compatible to new display media (phones, pads and tablets). Live Preview of Ad Pictures An advertiser now can see a live preview of the image going into their advertisement. Video in Advertisements Advertisers now have the ability to embed a You Tube video in their advertisement and preview it before posting. Election of 2015 Board Members Inserted in with the Sept / October issue of the HCCA Gazette magazine, voting HCCA members will receive the form to vote for their choice for the new 2015 class of National directors. Your vote will make a difference. Get involved and participate, it s your club HCCA Roster / Production Status With the 2014 summer tour season over, the focus will now change to the final details and production of a new 2014 HCCA Roster. The plan is to have it distributed to the members sometime after Hershey but before the end of this year. Though member data is all set, advertisements are being collected and laid out in the final format Just think, another present for your holiday When we know the exact distribution time, you will be advised. 6 November Meeting Minutes Minutes from Susquehanna Valley Region, HCCA November Business Meeting Sunday, November 2 nd, 2014 Home of Jeff and Tracy Lesher Reinholds, PA Meeting was called to order at 3:18 PM by President Jeff. It was decided to dispense with the reading of the March meeting minutes since they were published in the newsletter. Don Barlup gave two treasurers reports covering final Reliability Tour numbers. Total profits from the tour were $4, (after a $100 refund to all cars that participated) and Don sent a check to Hershey Region for $2, with a note saying the funds were to be put towards Youth Activities. Our region netted $2, In addition, Don reported that final numbers for the Hangover III showed an ending profit of $ Jeff reported that we had no new region members but that we would continue to offer a free first year for any new members to the region. He has sent information to a few prospects that contacted the National HCCA office regarding local regions. He included copies of the newsletter with the application for these people to see what we do. Under Old Business, Jeff gave Bob Ladd s report on the Hangover III. It was agreed that we will make a formal decision on Hangover IV at the March meeting based on Bob s recommendation and willingness to do another one. Clay Green has offered to help do a day s tour and Jeff and Tracy Lesher are willing to serve as registration chairs. Jeff reported that the Old Tyme Car Club would be having a reorganizational meeting on November 8 th at the Boyertown Museum. Hopefully this will help reinvigorate the region and we will continue to include them on invitations for future tours. 6

November Meeting Minutes Continued Under New Business, Jeff reviewed the tentative 2015 Calendar of Events: March 2 nd Business Meeting at Reinholds Restorations May 2 nd Dust Off Tour Possible Covered Bridges Theme May 17 th Brass in Berks Flea Market May BBC Tour June Possible Mike Romano two or three day tour July 18 Strasburg Railroad Tour and Show August - Tour to Rough and Tumble October Hershey and Hershey Hangover IV November Business Meeting Mike Romano discussed possible tours he has laid out based in Quakertown, PA. He d be willing to do a two or three day tour that would include the Hellertown Museum, Martin Guitar and possibly the Nicola Bulgari Collection. Pollack Restorations and Eastwood in Pottstown and the Boyertown Museum and Oley Turnpike Dairy. Mike is willing to run this if we think we can get enough support and turn out. Discussion was had regarding promoting this and including the Old Tyme Car Club membership and stressing it would be open to any pre 1932 vehicles as it is a local tour. We will have further discussion regarding details. Clay Green reported on 2015 Brass in Berks and said that he has changed the Wednesday evening cruise to be to Shady Maple. In addition for Monday evening he is looking at doing a Question/Answer educational presentation with a group of moderators. Topics such as how to easily change tires/rims, how to use Totally Awesome to degrease your chassis and anything else that helps make keeping our old cars drivable. Everyone seemed to think this was good idea. Jeff also asked if they would be doing a Ladies Driving school again as it was very popular and there could be a larger turnout based on the positive press from last year. Clay would look into this. 7

November Meeting Minutes Continued Don Barlup invited anyone interested to come up to the Swigart Museum on Saturday, November 8 th for a tour and a visit to off sight storage facilities. There is a cost of $20 per person and the Pullman Registry would be our host. There was a lot of discussion about this opportunity. Being no other new business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:04 PM. A very warming Italian buffet and refreshments was served by Tracy Lesher with desserts supplied by Reinholds Restorations. Respectfully submitted by Jeff Lesher 8

15 Left and 14 ¾ Returned By Clay Green Bruce the Moose rides in style! On August 3 rd, 15 cars left Boxborough, Massachusetts attempting to hit all five New England states. Total mileage was over 1400 miles and we even visited New York State as a bonus! Obliviously, this is what they call a progressive tour where you move from one Bed and Breakfast to another with no trailer close by! Packing tools, parts, clothes, etc. for 14 days in an antique car is a challenge. No, we don t have room for that hair dryer! Some roadside repairs were necessary; fortunately none were ours. How about replacing a center main bearing on a Model T on day one? Yes, a knock, dropped the pan, dressed what was left of the bearing, took a short cut to the next Bed and Breakfast and ordered a used bearing with overnight delivery. Once it was installed and fitted life for the Model T was good. Continued 10

a roadster can be a challenge. Plus, if it rained Bruce to be dried out and fluffed up for the next day! A little extra horsepower? The routes kept us on back roads and we saw some beautiful country, visited multiple antique shops, found a lot of ice cream, and yes, had lots of fun! We had some heavy rain (five inches) and Buicks with overhead valves do not like rain. It comes through the hood hinges and I learned that cars don t run on water! A very nice lady at a country store donated her picnic table cover and some tape. Voila! We made a diaper and finished the day! Yes, it was a bad hair day something about rain in an open car. We had our usual share of issues. Issues included flat tires, magneto problems, loose nuts and bolts, etc. Bruce the Moose made the entire trip. He was awarded as passenger to whoever was the first person to check-in each night an incentive to explore and enjoy the ride. Carrying a moose plus two weeks of clothes in Oh, what about the ¼ car that didn t make it?? The next to the last day, 40 miles as the crow flies from Boxborough and the trailers or 120 miles via the tour route the car developed a joint issue. An executive decision was made, six hours in the hotel parking lot trying to rectify the issue or an adult beverage on the porch. The rocking chairs and beverges won. It would have been a different decision earlier in the trip. Will brake for antiques and ice cream All in all a great trip and an adventure. Can t wait to do it again in two years. Next time, it will be in New York and Canada. We can t wait! 11

Hershey Hangover III By Bob Ladd Once again the iconic Hershey Fall Meet and Flea Market was followed by a unique Brass Age tour called Hershey Hangover III. The tour started on Saturday afternoon immediately following the show at Hershey in Myerstown, PA about twenty miles away. Twenty seven cars showed up and they were an impressive collection. We had the expected assortment of Buicks and Model T Fords punctuated by an occasional Franklin, Cadillac, Oakland, Hudson, Chalmers-Detroit, Overland, Packard and Marmon. The most unusual thing was the participation of two Locomobiles, three Pierce Arrows and two Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts. The origin of the participants was equally impressive with guests from Ireland, England and Australia as well as 15 states. Sunday s tour was challenging in 100 year old cars with substantial hills on our way to the mining village of Frackville. The scenery was gorgeous and we had good weather with fall colors that were spectacular. Our first stop was the fantastic JWR collection. 13

The latest acquisition is the famous Henry Austin Clark Mercer Speedster but the extent and quality of this collection is hard to describe. There are probably close to 100 cars including the original Oldsmobile Limited sold at RM Hershey five years ago and the largest National Touring Car I have ever seen. The collection includes many other brass cars and lines of Delage, Bugatti, Mercedes, Duesenberg, Rolls Royce, etc. Golden Age Air Museum. Everyone enjoyed the vintage aircraft and many took rides. After our return to the host hotel we had a great dinner in the evening with a talk by Horseless Carriage Gazette editor John Meyer III. Getting prepped for take-off. Mike Romano s 1914 Model T looking quite smart in the sunshine. After a luscious Italian buffet we proceeded downhill for a very special ice cream stop with a restored Good Humor truck at the Clay and Rene Green s 14

Sassy Brass a publication of the Susquehanna Valley Region HCCA Monday morning we left early for a scenic journey from Lebanon County south into Lancaster County through Amish country crossing through scenic Middle Creek Wildlife Preserve to The Amish Experience in Bird-InHand, PA. After viewing an informative film about the Amish and touring an Amish house we all went to the Plain and Fancy Restaurant for an amazing PA Dutch Buffet. After lunch we took a beautiful drive back to our host hotel and bade farewell for another year. This is a very unique boutique tour that is becoming a favorite year end touring experience in the Northeast. 15

Just for Fun Lancaster That Was: Lancaster's Trout family made the trip to see Gettysburg in 1907 Lancaster Intelligencer Sunday, November 9, 2014 Once upon a time, going to visit Gettysburg and its historic Civil War battlefield was more of an effort than it is today. Here, Dr. Will Trout of Lancaster and his family are shown in their traveling dusters during a day trip to Gettysburg in The man on the far right was a guide who was hired in Gettysburg for the tour. The Trouts vehicle, and cars were still a rarity in 1907, was an early-model Buick, most likely either a 1907 or 1908 touring model. Shown in the photo are Alice Trout (later Diehl), Louella Trout (Heidig), Betty Trout (Scott), George Trout and their father, Dr. Will Trout, a well-known Lancaster dentist of the time. His wife, and the kids mother, Kathryn Trout, is in the car holding the youngest child, also named Kathryn (later Anderson). The Trout family lived at 427 W. Orange St. in Lancaster, according to J. Andrew Heidig Jr., son of Louella Heidig. It was a difficult trip from what I understand. My grandfather was very big on automobiles he was a member of the auto club here from the very beginning, Heidig recalls now. His late grandfather, who Heidig remembers seeing as a boy in the 1930s and 1940s, had an office on South Duke Street that s now a law office. His mother, his aunts and his uncle, shown here in the picture, have all died over the years, so this photo is a nice memory, says Heidig, who will be 82 in February. Born and raised in Lancaster, he now lives in Homestead Village in East Hempfield Township, just west of the city. 17
