3 President s Message Being my first President s message to this group, I need to start with a great big thank you! Thanks to Bob Ladd (and Nancy) for having the drive and motivation to resurrect our humble little group of antique car lovers. Thanks to Don Barlup, Paul and Cheryl Vaughn, and many of the other previous members of the Susquehanna Valley Region for bringing back the history of this fairly old club. And of course thank you to all our members for your support. The last two years have been a lot of fun for my family (Tracy, Augie and Jack) and from what I ve seen, for many of you. We ve had some terrific tours, seen amazing scenery and collections with a very diverse group. The club has taken on co-hosting the Hershey Hangover Tour with AACA s Snappers; and through Cheryl Vaughn s diligence, we ve taken on the co-hosting of next year s Reliability Tour. This is a terrific group, with new members continuously joining and we have great plans. We just completed an adventurous Spring Dust Off Tour in Lebanon County, and many will participate in this year s Brass in Berks week of fun in May. In July, one of our newer members (Jared Cohen) will host what looks to be an amazing tour to Auburn Heights and the Marshall Steam Museum. Bob is once again planning for a terrific Hershey Hangover on the Sunday and Monday after Hershey and we ll schedule a location for the November meeting as we move into Summer. I want to again thank our Board of Directors: Bob (Tour Director) and Nancy (Secretary), Ernie Spittler for being willing to serve as our Vice President, Don Barlup to continue on as our club Treasurer, Russ Martin our new Membership Chairperson and of course my wife Tracy who has taken on the Newsletter Editor and Webmaster s position with a lot of zeal. All the best- Jeff May

6 Third Annual Lebanon County Dust-off Tour By Tracy Lesher You could not have asked for more amazing weather to break -in our cars for touring season. Nineteen cars participated in the Third Annual Dust-off Tour. We had several new to the SV Region riders joining us for Saturday, including two of Darren Harsh s children Caitlyn and Nathan, Barbara Snyder significant other of Mike Romano s, Ian s lovely wife Julie, and new members Jeff and Lisa Garlick. Our first stop of the morning brought us to the historic Isaac Meier House in Myerstown. The property for the house was secured by Mr. Valentine Herclerode, a German immigrant in the early 1730 s. Construction of the house began during this period. Later, Isaac Meier married Herclerode s daughter Catherine and bought the land and home. We learned that Mr. Meier was the powerbroker of Eastern Lebanon County during his short life. He was both banker and sheriff. Amongst, many of the artifacts was Meier s ledger containing his financial dealings. It was relief that none of our ancestors were indebted to him! Apparently, Baron Stiegel had to rely on Meier s loans from time to time. Not everyone liked Mr. Meier; and in July of 1770, he was murdered in a local Tavern after being shot in the back of his head. The reward for his murderer s capture was never cashed in. Continued on next page 6
7 From the Meier House, we traversed through Eastern Lebanon County to the quaint village of Cornwall to enjoy a delicious barbeque lunch at Cornwall United Methodist Church. While little Jack Lesher continued his nap, the final stop of the day travelled to Light s Fort in Lebanon. Our cars attracted a lot of attention from the neighborhood. No doubt there are pictures on Facebook not posted by our club members. John and Joyce Rendemonti s amazing Franklin The route brought the tour to the home of Jonathan Griggs, former AACA Museum President. Not only did we enjoy his stunning collection, but his railroad platform and arcade games captivated as well. It s hard to believe that this was Mr. Grigg s first attempt at building a train platform. Jack Lesher Bob and Nancy Ladd graciously opened their home for post-tour refreshments. Thank-you to the Ladd s for this year s Dust-off Tour route. And, a huge thankyou to Dan Albright for his assistance throughout the day! It is the all the little things that add up to make our events so much fun knowing there is less worry about! Continued on next page Augie Lesher 7

9 Brandywine Valley Tour Hosted by Jared and Amy Cohen Join us on Sunday, July 7 th, 2013, for a fun filled day for the entire family. Enjoy the surrounding views from your Horseless Carriage while touring the gorgeous Brandywine area. We will start our day with a tour of Higgins Restorations in Kennett Square. Walter Higgins, proprietor, restorer, and master machinist has graciously offered us the use of the facilities which includes 3 acres of pavement, ideal for trailer parking. This will be our home base from which we will never be more than 10 miles away in radius. From there, we will stop off at Last Chance Garage in Unionville where Lou Mandich will share tales of how he came to specialize in reviving old, long forgotten relics, many of which are HPOF winners today. After motoring along some more country roads, the next stop is Mushrooms Café and Antiques for lunch. Enjoy farm fresh homemade delights and tasty sandwiches while browsing through a marvelous banked barn from the mid 1800 s full of interesting pieces. From there we will tour along the Brandywine River, making our way south into DE towards our flagship stop, Auburn Heights. Our visit to Auburn Heights is a way to experience life during the Industrial Era and the dawn of the automobile. Also available, a tour the Marshall family s Victorian home and museum consisting of the largest collection of operating Stanley Steamers in the world. You will have the opportunity to take a ride on their 1/8 scale steam train or one of several Stanley Steamers circling the property. If you haven t been, this is a rare opportunity to experience one of the historic gems listed on the National Registry. Continued on next page 9
