1 Cruise News September, 2016 President s Message Hi Gang! Hope all you are staying cool! August started out like a Lion in the heat department. Lucky for those of us that went to the Big Bear Fun Run, the weather was great! Sitting in the shade with a light breeze was really nice. It was another great show. We had about 30 club members in attendance. I want to thank Bruce and Pam Gall for having the Gang & friends over to their house on Friday night for a wonderful Taco Cart Dinner and some fun entertainment. Doug Clark s 52 Henry J was selected as one of the Top 25 cars in attendance. For any new members this is a must attend show for you next year. Talk to John Peterson if you have any questions..he was a first timer. Jimmy Steiger and his family want to thank all the Over the Hill Gang Members that was able to make it to his house on Saturday for the Open House Celebration of Bonnie s Life. Jim & Bonnie joined the Gang in 1977 and are Life Members. Bonnie will be long remembered for her love of water skiing at the river and loved being a member of OTHGSD and all that went with being a gang member. Bonnie you will be dearly missed. Just a reminder that Joe P has another fantastic Tech Event planned for all of us on Sat. Sept. 10 th. Check your for more information and details or give him a call. 5 Doug Clark came home with a Top 20 Award The following article came from the San Diego Union on Tuesday August 23, 2016 and is a wonderful article about our Sue Chambers. For those that take the paper, you will note that her picture is on the front page. MAKING A DIFFERENCE A HEAD FOR NUMBERS, A HEART FOR HELPING As a long time accountant and former chief financial officer for the Otay Water District, Sue Chambers is a numbers person. As a volunteer, she is also a numbers person, with a string of giving back gigs that have paid rich dividends to everyone involved. Including Sue Chambers "I think I end up doing these things because of my background. A lot of people don't want to be the number cruncher," said Chambers, 68, who has volunteered with Friends of the Rancho San Diego Library, the Water Conservation Garden and the Over the Hill Gang car club. "But there is real fulfillment in knowing you are helping. You know these groups can't afford to hire people to do these things, and you want to see them succeed." It started in 1995, when Chambers Father-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer. He spent his last days in the care of the San Diego Hospice and Chambers was so impressed with the organization and its caregivers, she vowed to be a hospice volunteer. Someday. Once she retired. But Chambers couldn't wait that long. She started volunteering with San Diego Hospice in 1998, three years before she retired. Technically, she was a few years early. Personally, she was right on the money. "It was wonderful" Chambers said of her time at the organization, which ended in 2013 after San Diego Hospice closed in the wake of a Medicare Audit and bankruptcy. "You go in and you became part of the family. You were the person who got to talk to the patient about anything and everything they wanted to talk about. You were also someone who was very dependable for the family, and you became very close to them. I do miss it." She started out in the accounting department, but by the time San Diego Hospice closed, Chambers had become a patient-care volunteer. She also helped organize the annual charity art show and tended the rose garden. And while she was at it, she established a pattern for her volunteering. Chambers would start out helping an organization with their money, and she would end up contributing to so much more than just the bottom line. Take the San Diego County Library's Rancho San Diego Branch in El Cajon. Sometime in the late 1990's, while the Library was still under construction, a friend told Chambers that the Friends of the Rancho San Diego Library needed a Treasurer. As it turned out, the fledgling organization also needed someone who could file the paperwork needed to give it nonprofit status. And when the friends of the Rancho San Diego Library were about to open it's used book store, it needed someone to help fill the shelves. Chambers did all of the above, including drafting the Over the Hill Gang, a car club for fans of pre1959 autos, where Chambers and her husband are members and Chambers is the Treasurer-to Organize a car show and book drive. By the time the Studebaker dust cleared, 10,000 books had been collected, and the friends of the Library used bookstore were ready to roll. The bookstore is still there, and last year it raised $30,000 for the library. Chambers is still the group's treasurer. "With Sue, its not just one thing. It is the Library and the Over the Hill Gang and volunteering as the Friends' treasurer. I can't overstate how organized she is and how good she is at providing information you can use," said Brenna Ring, the Rancho San Diego Library's Branch Manager. "The Friends of the Library has been instrumental in supporting the mission of the Library to provide materials and free access to the entire community. We wouldn't be able to do a lot of what we do without their help." Chambers was also a longtime Docent at the Water Conservation Garden, where her duties somehow ended up including cleaning the Garden Pond and watching over its many frogs. And when the women of the Over the Hill Gang decided to do a fundraising calendar featuring photos of the ladies in their birthday suits (along with their cars and strategically placed accessories), Chambers was the one who took the photos. The calendar raised more than $2,000 for the San Diego Wounded Warriors Project. In the addition to friends of the library and the Over the Hill Gang, she keeps busy helping her daughters at the

6 Dream Dinners meal-assembly franchise they opened in La Mesa in Sue is also interested in taking on homelessness as her next cause. Chambers left the Water Conservation Garden a few years ago to spend time with her Grandchildren and whip her own garden to water wise shape, but like everything else in her volunteer life, her days in the garden remind her of a payoff that even the expert number cruncher could not have expected. "A lot of the kids who came to the garden didn't know what a tadpole was, and suddenly they had a tadpole they could look at and touch, and they were so happy and I was so happy", Chambers said. "It's true what they say about volunteering. You get back in abundance when you give. THANK YOU CARDS FROM FINAL HONOR FAMILY RECIPIENTS On June 6, 2016, the Staff of Final Honor provided a horse-drawn funeral carriage to 7 veterans who were eligible for a burial at Miramar National Cemetery. Their program is funded through grants and private donations and supporters. The OTHG had recently sent them a check for $1,000 to offset their costs. These are a few of the Thank You cards we received from families who received this burial service at no cost to them. Thank you so much for your generous donation to provide the carriage for my father s service. It was beautiful and a special tribute to him. It meant a lot to my whole family. With thanks, Carol Thank you for the donation of the horse and carriage for our father s service at Miramar. It was a beautiful way to pay a special tribute to him. Thanks, Bill Thank you for your wonderful contribution to George s service on Monday.
