This month is the club picnic, we hope you can make it out to enjoy the outdoors and good company. Speaking of outdoors our next field trip will be held at red top mountain on the 28th of July at 1pm. The Yakima rock club will be meeting us at the top at that time in the parking area which dead ends. Some general info in regards to the last board meeting: a quorum was held and bylaws were discussed; article 5 section 5 states " Three officers and a minimum of four members at large shall constitute a quorum for board meetings". The reason for the change is because of instances prohibited in article 5 section 4. The board has simply not been getting enough attendance from members at large to constitute a forum until this last meeting. I propose that the minimum of members at large go from 4 to 2. I am hoping to hear from the club on this concern at the next board meeting which will be held the Thursday after the picnic up stairs in the main lobby of Chico Alliance Church. No vote has been held in this regard. My other heartfelt concern is for our volunteer base. These volunteers give a lot; and have given a lot over a number of years, some taking on more than one role because they care deeply for the youth and general membership growth and enjoyment. Some show up early to meetings to set up and others stay late breaking down. I am asking please do your part and if you are willing please come talk to me and I will tell you what you can do to help. The club is always needing rock donation for silent auctions and November show, so keep the tumblers moving. But in addition to the spot price, there is also a cost to fabricate the metal into wire or sheet, so the price of the item you buy is the cost of the metal plus the cost to make it.

Also, different companies will have different fabrication charges because of local labor rates and their desired profit margin. You can save money by finding a company with a lower fabrication charge.

But for casting purposes, there's an even better way to save. Buy your silver at a coin store. They sell bars and rounds in pure and Sterling for the spot price plus about a dollar per ounce.

But in addition to the spot price, there is also a cost to fabricate the metal into wire or sheet, so the price of the item you buy is the cost of the metal plus the cost to make it. Find a friend to place a joint order and split the shipping charges. But for casting purposes, there's an even better way to save. Buy your silver at a coin store. So I save about $3 per ounce, pay no shipping charges, don't have to wait for mail order, and support a local business SAWING JUMP RINGS The difficult part of making jump rings for me has always been holding the coil while cutting off the individual rings. I use a saw to get the best fit when closing the rings later. I've seen all sorts of suggestions for ways to hold the coil, but the one that works best for me is this little jig made from scrap wood. It's about 2 inches wide and 4-5 inches long with a groove cut down its length to cradle the coil of wire and a thin stop attached to the front end. To cut the rings, thread your saw blade through the coil, hold the coil down in the groove and against the front stop, and saw through the bottom of the coil at about a 40 degree angle. Don't forget to use some wax or cutting lube. It really does make a difference. If you don't believe me, do an experiment while you're cutting a lot of rings. Count how many rings can be cut before the blade breaks. First, do the test without lube, and then do it again while adding some lube to the blade after cutting every 8-10 rings. It's the best way I've ever found to hold the coils easily and securely. If the coil doesn't move, you break fewer blades. The Stone Forest National Park of Shilin-Lunan (Yunnan) is located in the Lunan Yu Autonomous County, 126 km (79 mi) southeast of Kunming, at altitudes of 1,700-2,000 m. It has an area of over 340 square km (135 square mi) but, together with the forests and localities, the surface of the National Park goes to 400 square km (160 square mi). 200 square km are reservation of first degree. The local minorities living around the park are Miao and Yi. PAGE 4 Similar phenomena can be encountered in France, Spain, Australia, Papua-New Guinea, Mexico, Brazil and Sarawak, but at a much smaller scale, the sum of all being less than one quarter of the surface of the Stone Forest of Yunnan. The stones in the rock labyrinth got various shapes, from columns to posts, moving stones, mushrooms, towers, pyramids, corridors, antropomorph and zoomorph shapes, isolated or in groups. Many of the rocks pop up from lake beds. Many stones received local names: "Phoenix bird adjusting its feathers", "rhinoceroses watching the moon", "Ashma" (the name of a legendary hero of the local ethnic group, Yi), "monkey on the elephant back", "mother and son", "the teeth of the dragon", "the Great Mogul" and others. Many columns are collapsed due to the earthquakes. The columns can be up to m ( ft) tall. The Stone Forest is a typical karst formation, carved in a vast stretch of limestone sediment formed on a seafloor, 270 million years ago. The limestone going out of the sea was cracked on large surfaces. The web of rectangular cracks eased the advance of surface waters, coming from abundant rainfall, to exert a vast action of dissolving and washing along them, forming first grooves whose dimensions, in time, grew up to meters. In time, the grooves formed a lapis field. The lapis stones deepened, forming prismatic columns which detached from the calcareous mass. About 200 million years ago, various fantastic stone forms emerged, such as peaks, pillars, corridors, towers, pyramids and stalagmites, like a vast forest of stone. Then, 250 Ma ago, volcanic eruptions covered the calcareous formations, protecting them against the action of rains, rivers and vegetation. When, in time, erosion carved the volcanic rocks, revealing again the limestone columns, the new columns were thinner and cracked in some places. In Eocene, 55 Ma ago, the columns were covered by the waters of a deep lake, which deposed red sediments. In Quaternary, the lake was filled by sediments and the surface waters revealed the rocks with the aspect of prismatic columns. In places where erosion started earlier, the columns got sharper and thinner, with the pyramid shape. The formation of the Stone Forest is very humid, but the shadow allows relatively few plants, especially large ferns and vines, to grow there shtml

This is a fun event for all. We will have some yummy food and some games for those who wish to participate. Do not forget about the Kitsap County Fair coming up in August.
