2 A Memo from Michael SWD Governor Michael Iafrato & First Lady Melody Jordahl-Iafrato Hello Southwest District, I and First Lady Melody have recently attended two 100th anniversary celebrations, El Paso Club and Phoenix and welcomed the very first bell ring of the newest club in our District, Weaver Mountains. It was amazing to witness two beginning of the second hundred years and the very fist moments of a club. They were both so different and so similar at the same time. The one thing that was exactly the same is their desire to support the children in their community. Please enjoy the pictures of El Paso and Phoenix two strong proud clubs celebrating their 100th anniversary and the beginning of Weaver Mountains, welcome to the Kiwanis family. Congratulations also go out to the El Desayuno Kiwanis Club of Clovis, New Mexico who celebrated 50 years on May 13, 2017 having been formed in At their celebration they had two of their Charter Members in attendance. Congratulation on your first 50. We look forward to your celebration and the next 50 years serving the children of the world.

Ruby Bridges to speak during Opening Session In 1960, when Ruby Bridges was only six years old, she became one of the first black children to integrate New Orleans all-white public school system. Greeted by an angry mob and escorted by federal marshals, Ruby bravely crossed the threshold of this school and into history, initiating the desegregation of New Orleans public schools. She held her head high every day, never missing a school day that whole year. Her walk to the front door of William Frantz Elementary School was immortalized in Norman Rockwell s famous painting, The Problem We All Live With, Robert Coles The Story of Ruby Bridges and in the Disney movie Ruby Bridges. In addition, she published Through My Eyes, her own awardwinning version of her story.

We believe this partnership with Protect America will provide a great benefit at a great price to our members. The partner benefit will be available to Kiwanis members in the United States and North America. More information is at protectamerica.com/ kiwanis.
21 Governor Michael and Governor Elect Ed, I had to share this information (Article with photos attached). Being a part of our International President's efforts in regards to the Eliminate Project and bringing back the Mother's Day Zeller - this was a response I did not expect. I was blown away by this response from one of our members and a leader in the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club in Los Alamos, New Mexico. As you all know they are a fulfilled Model Club. However, Don Casperson a Past Lt. Governor during the Eliminate Project - sent this Newspaper Article from the 26th of April in regards to an initiative by a K-Kids at Aspen School which is located in Los Alamos. My question to all members of Kiwanis - Why is it a K-Kids Club gets it - "TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A BABY TO DAY - ESPECIALLY FROM A PREVENTABLE DISEASE LIKE TETANUS." And then they are able to activate the entire school to get involved with a Penny Collection initiative - ultimately raising $1,000. And we (individual Kiwanians) are reluctant to ask family members or our neighbors to help us achieve our goal - which will save Tens of Millions of babies around the world - from the tortuous Death of Tetanus. I would like to have this prepared as an article for our next SWD Newsletter. Thought this would be of interest to all of you since we are all still engaged in achieving our goal for the Southwest which was proposed by and agreed to by the House of Delegates in Maybe K-Kids can energize us again - we are over 2/3rds of the way towards our goal. I cannot thank each of you enough for your continued support. I don't know about you - but it is events like this by members of our family, right here in the Southwest that keeps me engaged and gives me BE- LIEF - Anything is possible. God Bless all of you, Ron "Making Time to Make a Difference"
