1 A non-profit organization whose goal is to foster the knowledge and appreciation of general geology, minerals, fossils, archaeology and lapidary arts. An affiliate of the Eastern Federation of Mineral and Societies and the American Federation of Mineral Societies. JANUARY 2017 VOLUME 57 An Award-Winning Publication ISSUE 1 The President s Message - by Carl Miller January Program Our January program will be Scott Duresky giving his final presentation of The Historic Rutherford MinePegmatite #2 When: Tuesday, January 10, :30 pm Where: Ridge Baptist Church 1515 Eastridge Road Richmond, Virginia Welcome to Year 61! What a wonderful holiday party that we had in December. There was so much food it was hard to know where to start (so several of us started three or more times!) I saw a lot of nice minerals around at the tables, and some cut stones and jewelry as well. A wonderful surprise was a display of some of Suzanne Hedderly s fungus collection. Nature s beauty is often in such unexpected places. We also celebrated our 60th anniversary as a club with a big cake (proud to say December was also my 20th anniversary in the club!). The highlight of the night for me was being able to present Barbara Hadley with so many EFMLS and AFMS newsletter awards. Among other awards, Barbara received the 2nd place award for Small Bulletin in both the Eastern Federation and American Federation, and 1st Place and Trophy Award, and 2nd place, for Drawn Features submissions in Eastern Federation. Each of these awards are outstanding achievements, and we are very proud to have Barbara as our Editor. Please thank Barbara for her great work the next time you see her. Barbara exemplifies quiet, faithful service. Some people can be splashy and stand up front, but others lead by deed, and are the heart of our great hobby and avocation. Get out there! 3 December Board Meeting Minutes For the Richmond Gem & Mineral Society December 20, 2016 President Carl Miller opened the December board meeting at 7:05 p.m. In attendance were Carl Miller, Dave Hutchison, Perry Wells, Richard Starr, Frank Toth and Andy Dietz. Attendance: Richard noted that he has observed a slowdown in attendance over the past few months. Carl suggested that we create a survey to see if there is something else the membership would be interested in seeing or doing. : Richard said that he and Pete McCrery were considering a day-long lapidary class to help new folks become familiar with the equipment and be able to enjoy the art. Museum Trip: Carl would like to charter a bus to the Smithsonian Museum in the future. He hasn t checked the costs for a while and is willing to check around if there is interest. Treasury: Dave noted that he is in the process of paying the EFMLS dues for All other bills are paid and 2017 dues are coming in. He also noted that the University of Richmond has verbally given us a go for the July 2017 meeting and that we should see something in writing soon. Equipment for sale: Andy is going to bring the long-wave and short-wave florescent light fixtures to the March meeting to sell as surplus. The cost is $20.00 per fixture. The condition is AS IS, WHERE IS with no guarantee as to condition or serviceability. Idea for Swap: A question came up pertaining to the availability of the kitchen in the fellowship hall of Ridge Baptist Church. It seems that folks were looking for food and snacks at the November Rock Swap. The last time someone asked, the church said no. Carl will ask if the Church youth group would like to take on a small menu as a fund raiser Officers: Perry announced that he was ready for another 3-year term as a House Committee member. Carl said that Pamm Bryant would continue on as the field trip coordinator. He noted that there are fewer and fewer places to go. Perry told us that Martin Marietta had commenced mining operations on the Moorefield Property in Amelia County. There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm. 5 Jewelry Bench Tips courtesy of Brad Smith SANDING/POLISHING IN TIGHT PLACES Often you'll need to sand or polish an area that's impossible to reach with even a small wheel on a flexshaft. Other times it might be the bottom of a pocket or inside bottom corner of a box that needs to be finished. One trick for these nit-picky jobs may be left over from your last Chinese dinner - a chopstick. Hospitality I've found quite a few uses for these in the shop. Prepare the tip by simply sawing it off at a 45 degree angle. Then apply whatever abrasive grit you will need for the job or hold a strip of sandpaper around the end. Loose grit can be held onto the tip with a bit of Vaseline or oil. Tripoli or rouge can be just rubbed onto the end of the chopstick. Thanks to Everyone who brought refreshments to the December meeting. OCHRE APPLICATOR Yellow ochre is used when you want to be sure the solder won't flow on an area of your piece while you're soldering another area. The only problem with ochre is coming up with a good way to store and apply it. I use recycled nail polish bottles. They seal well and have a built-in brush applicator. Just clean them out with a little acetone or nail polish remover, and they're ready to go. See all Brad's jewelry books at Amazon.com/author/BradfordSmith Thanks to Harry Clay for being our intrepid Photographer!
