We meet at the Chico Alliance Church Daycare (entrance in the back). Address: 3670 Chico Way NW, Bremerton, Washington. Elected Officers for 2018 President: Shane Schackmann (360) Vice President: Bill Little (360) Secretary: Talena Webb-Klumper (360) October 2018 Greetings fellow rock hounds! Just a reminder elections are right around the corner and the club needs new volunteers, so if you have thought about it or even if you have not but are willing to lend a helping hand please consider putting your name in the running for any office. November show is next month and we need muscle to help set up and tear down. Please contact the show chairman Gordan Eslava for direction on when and where we need volunteers to help out. We need a field trip chair person willing to lead groups out to the dig cites. It could be as simple as following the mineral council fieldtrip calendar and promoting the location. We still need donated rock for silent auctions and for next years fair, members with tumblers please keep them turning, there are even other members who can donate the material to be tumbled if that is a concern. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as president. Very respectfully, Shane Schackmann Support our friends at West Coast Mining! Learn all about Gold! Check out Gold Rush Days! 5 Vangie s Wire Wrapping PAGE 5 Vangie's Wire wrap group meets the 4th Tuesday of October, 23rd and November 27th at 10 am, and will not meet in December, but wishes all a happy, safe, and blessed, holiday season. Vangie's wire wrap group meets in her home and is for KMGS members only. There is limited space but new members are welcome to come learn from highly skilled professional wire wrappers. For more wire wrap workshop information you can contact Vangie at: Rock Club Crafter review: by ViQ'Tree The Rock Club Crafters had a busy season of community outreach. Pat Fagan and ViQ'Tree Keefer did presentations at Mary Martha Rehabilitation Center in Poulsbo for the Red Hat Society. There was a lot of positive feed back from those that attended and Pat and ViQ'Tree sold a few pieces from their collection on display. AnnieLaurie Burke demonstrated 4 times at the Washington State Fair and ViQ'Tree did a 2 hour demonstration in the Hobby Hall area. It is a wonderful experience to demonstrate and promote our rock club activities. The demonstrator is given two free State Fair tickets plus a parking pass for volunteering two hours of demonstration and they are sent a certificate of gratitude of participation of making a positive difference as a volunteer. I hope more of our members might be willing to do a 2 hour demonstration, or display in the lapidary and jewelry displays at the State Fair. It would be nice to see our club members participate at the State Fair as exhibitors and demonstrators. Now is the time of creating goals and an action plan for next years activities. Bobby Sack was the star attraction at the September Rock Club Crafter meeting. She is modeling the outfit she wore when our rock club hosted the Federation show. Bobby brought in an example of a vast collection of display case favors from our Fall Festival of Gem Shows as well as the Federation Show display case favors. She also brought materials to make gem tree display case favors for this years display cases. She not only inspired us with the historical information on display case favors, she also brought in a bunch of homegrown tomatoes from her garden plus delicious zucchini bread and apple juice and attracted visitors that came in to see Bobby and what we were working on. It is volunteers like Bobby that help keep our club fun for the juniors. Bobby provided materials to make gem trees at our club picnics, and she does a lot of planning and preparations for junior activities throughout the year. When you see her let her know how much you appreciate her gift of service. An expression of appreciation nurtures and uplifts the spirits of those who serve. We had a club of over 200 members when we hosted the Northwest Federation Mineral Society. That year we had a show in July and our November Fall Festival of Gem Show. The rock ferry boat were the display case favors. They had embroidered patches made as well. Thanks to Michael's help in helping to edit images for the articles is send in.

6 A Tip From Our Own PAGE 6 Maybe you were at the meeting a little while back when Garry Mahan told us about his stacking boxes? Well here is his explanation of how to build them. This is a great idea! Thanks for the write-up Garry! The stacking boxes are made of 1/2 inch plywood (or OSB). They are made from 5 pieces of this material - 3 at 10" X 14"(sides and back), and 2 at 8" X 14"(sloping front and bottom). They are held together by wood glue and nails (or screws). Each box can hold the contents of a 5-gallon bucket (approx.). I have about 400 of them. You can use thicker plywood, but not thinner. I started making mine with drywall screws, but ended up using a nail gun with 2 inch galv. brads. The nails are only needed to hold them together until the glue dries. I used Titebond 2 wood glue, available at any hardware store. I recommend you stack the boxes no more than 6 high (stacked on concrete). You can see from the photo how he angled the bottom. Great photos, Garry, and great collection! I m jealous! These would be easy to label and organize as well. Kathy Cowsert adds: I have found that empty potato bags hold rocks/slabs very well and are see through. This might let you store multiple but distinct samples in the same bin each in a separate potato bag. Thanks for the tips, Kathy! If you have any tips that you would like to share with the club, please feel free to me at: kitsapmineralandgem@outlook.com. Newer club members can benefit from tried and true methods, new ideas, and the experience that you have! If you would like to run an ad in the Trading Post, please me the details at the above address as well. Post ISO ads, selling ads, or sales that you know of and want to spread the info. Anything lapidary, geology, or mineral related is great and always welcome.

7 PAGE 7 A rock that was used as a doorstop for the past 30 years turns out to be a meteorite valued at $100K By Amanda Jackson, CNN Fri October 5, 2018 (CNN)A 22-pound rock that has been propping open a door in Michigan for decades turns out to be a meteorite valued at $100,000, according to Central Michigan University. Mona Sirbescu, a CMU geology professor, gets asked all the time by people to examine the rocks they bring her -- but none ever turn out to be an official space rock. "For 18 years, the answer has been categorically 'no' -- meteor wrongs, not meteorites," Sibescu said in a statement from CMU on Thursday. But that all changed when she was asked to examine an oddly shaped large rock that a Michigan man, who didn't want to be named, had had in his possession for the last 30 years. "I could tell right away that this was something special," Sibescu said. After testing, she determined it was a meteorite, made of of 88.5% iron and 11.5% nickel. This isn't just any space rock, though. Weighing 22 pounds, it's the sixth-largest recorded find in Michigan -- and potentially worth $100,000, according to CMU. "It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically," Sibescu said. For double verification, a slice of it was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, which validated it was in fact a meteorite, according to the press release. Journey to Earth The rock arrived on Earth sometime in the 1930s, according its owner, who obtained it in 1988 when he bought a farm in Edmore, about 30 miles southwest of Mount Pleasant. While touring the property, the man spotted the rock propping open a door and asked the farmer what it was. The farmer told him it was a meteorite, that it was part of the property and he could have it. The farmer said that it had come down onto the property in the '30s -- "and it made a heck of a noise when it hit," the new owner recalled him saying, according to CMU's statement. In the morning, the farmer and his father found the crater and dug out the still-warm meteorite. The new owner lived on the farm a few years, and when he moved, he took the mystery rock with him. For the past thirty years, he has used it as a doorstop and sent it off to school with his children for show-and-tell. This year, the man was inspired by stories of Michigan residents finding and selling pieces of meteorites. "I said, 'Wait a minute. I wonder how much mine is worth.'" From doorstop to display Now, the space rock, dubbed Edmore meteorite, is waiting to find a permanent home. "What typically happens with these at this point is that meteorites can either be sold and shown in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to make a profit," Sirbescu said. The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in Maine are considering purchasing the meteorite for display, according to CMU. If a sale goes through, the man has agreed to give 10% of the sale value to the university for the study of earth and atmospheric sciences. CNN's Patrick Cornell contributed to this report.

9 Juniors Section PAGE 9 We will meet during the October meeting. Our topic will be different types of Volcanoes. We hope you can come! Sincerely, Kathy Reimers, Bobbie Sack and Jill Wetzel. Can you name some famous volcanoes? <<Do you know the different parts of a volcano? Here s a nice little graphic to get your curiosity going. I ll let the Junior Leaders tell you all about the different types and shapes of volcanoes at the meeting. I can think of two interesting volcanoes right off the top of my head! Mt. St. Helens is a famous volcano that is just south of us a couple of hours. Have you ever been there? It s well worth the visit. In addition to checking out the visitors center and seeing the mountain and eruption site, be sure to visit the Ape Caves. This may have to be a separate trip, but it s well worth it. The Ape Caves are large lava tubes that you can walk through! These tubes are from an older eruption on the mountain. Be sure to bring plenty of headlamps and good walking shoes as well as a warm jacket. The tubes stay a cool temperature throughout the year. Another famous volcano is Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae, as well as several other settlements. The eruption ejected a cloud of stones, ashes and volcanic gases to a height of 21 mi, spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of cu yds per second. More than 1,000 people died in the eruption, but exact numbers are unknown.
