As you travel, if you do any rockhounding (and who wouldn t?), pick up a handful of small pieces for our grab bags for the 2015 show, we will need a lot of specimens. This year our annual dinner and installation of officers will be held at Harold Seltzer s, 3500 Tyrone Blvd., St. Petersburg, Thursday, May 15. I do hope you will attend. Have a safe and relaxing summer. As the song says, See you in September. Julia Larson President
3 May, 2014 Rock-A-Gram Page 3 A Note From Bill Schmidt: As usual during our Show we sold our excess Lapidary Journals. To find the extras I did an inventory of what we had and ordered for the Library. We took in two donations of quite a few boxes of magazines, which helped out quite a bit. Also some others were found through the Tampa club. The newer magazines are in the main room of the clubhouse and the oldest ones are boxed up in the office. Please put the back when you are done so we don't loose any; we were down about 8 magazines since last year. So where we stand now is the Journal started bi-monthly in 1947 and went monthly in In this span we have just a few in '60, '61, and '62. In the rest of the decade '63, '68, & '69 are complete while the remainder of the years have just a few. The '70's and '80's are 20 years of complete with the slight exception of November, 85. The '90's are over half with 6 years complete and just 5 issues are missing out of the other 4 years. Years 2000 and 2001 are complete but, we need 20 issues between 2002 and From 2007 on we do not have any. If you have issues that could help fill the empty spots, please get them to me and I will get them into the system. A full sized list in hanging on the shelves with the Journals in the main room. PLEASE HELP US WITH THE SHOW GRAB BAGS: Looking ahead for our next Show we need to restock the grab bag closet. So during your summer travels, and rock hounding, would you please consider looking for some small pieces of whatever you are collecting to donate to the club We need small examples of typical rocks and minerals or larger ones that we can break up. Next fall we'll get volunteers together, put a piece in a small plastic bag, add a paper with the identification and then group them into Grab Bags. Any quantity, small or large, would be greatly appreciated. Sue Hazelden has been spearheading this project for over 18 years and is retiring----so we are looking for volunteers to get together one morning (usually a Saturday morning) sometime in September or October to fill bags. We will supply all the materials. The more volunteers we have, the quicker and more fun it is, so PLEASE give Sue a quick call or her to sign up. Contact Sue Hazelden at or her at sujagems1@aol.com. This is an easy, cheap, quick, and fun way to help support your club. Thank You, Bill Schmidt WELCOME NEW MEMBER Gail Thayer Who wouldn't want to see the Rolling Stones? Well, come to the clubhouse on May 16th, 2014 and you will be able to experience them 1st hand!!! (Well, sort of) Actually, our back deck on the clubhouse is full of buckets and buckets of stones that need to be sorted thru and removed. The ones that are not valuable will go into a rock garden. You don't need to know much about rocks because Sue Hazelden will be there to help decide what to keep and what to put in the garden. These buckets of rocks are adding a lot of weight to the deck which is already in bad shape, so we need lots of help. Please come to the clubhouse on the 16th at 8:30 a.m., if you can help for a couple hours. This project will take more than one day, so if you can't make it for this time, there will be additional work days and times. Thanks so much!!! Donna Sapp Membership/Corresponding Secretary
4 Page 4 Rock-A-Gram May, 2014 Monthly Bench Tips By: Brad Smith Canaveral Moonstone, May, 2014 Brad Smith is moderator of LAROCKS and teaches jewelry making in Santa Monica, California. REVOLVING SOLDER PAD: Often when we're soldering we have multiple pieces on the pad or a single piece and would like to work on several sides of it during the same heat. One of the ways to deal with this is to put your solder pad onto a turntable. That way you can rotate each piece into position when you need to or can rotate the pad to reach another side of a larger piece. All you need to make one of these is a piece of aluminum sheet and an inexpensive turn table assembly. A good hardware store will have both, although you can usually find the aluminum in the scrap pile of a local sheet metal shop. In building a turntable for my 6 inch solder pad, I used a seven inch square piece of aluminum and cut out 1/2 inch notches from each corner. Then I used a bench vice to bend the sides along the dotted lines to form a tray that cradles the solder pad. I attached the tray to the turntable assembly with a couple small machine screws and nuts. QUENCHING: Some jewelers drop the hot piece from soldering directly into the pickle. Do you hear that little hiss? The hot piece sends small drop-lets of acid into the air. This can rust nearby tools and can't be all that good to breathe either. To avoid this I quench in water. A coffee cup of water at the solder station lets me cool a soldered piece before dumping it into the pickle. It's also useful for annealing metals and for cooling off tweezers. Also we should save some of the material for the annual show. Someone will need to identify the material and get pricing for them. The following people have been suggested for this Pat Davis, Jerri Heer, Sue Hazelden, and possibly Shamus Walker, and Dave Schwebel. Motion by Jerri Heer, to purchase and install a keyless entry system, on the outside doors of the club house. This is being requested for the new silver class that wants to get started.
