4 GWRRA Arizona Chapter A Region F California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Hawaii Facebook page, GWRRA Tucson Chapter A Director s Corner Chapter Director, Mike Hagen Hi all, The trip to green valley to the Rodeo restaurant was a little wet as it kept raining almost all afternoon. Needless to say everyone showed up in cars. The dinner was very good and more than most of us could eat. We had a nice conversation and everyone agreed that we should do it again. We met Paul and Debbie at the Oracle Inn & Steakhouse for their farewell dinner. We had a nice time except when the waitress dumped about five drinks on Paul s back, he handled it well don t know if I could have stayed so calm. The breakfast ride to Nickel s diner was very enjoyable. Susan had made a goof when she sent out the blast so we checked to make sure no one was left hanging. We met the rest of the group at the diner. The food was good and we were able to listen too many of the stories from wing ding. We sure wish we could have attended but we are definitely planning to be there in Texas next year. This was the first ride in quite a while that the 2 wheeled bikes outnumbered the 3 wheeled ones. By popular request we are planning another movie night at the Roadhouse Cinemas. We are also planning another day at the gas light theater. I mentioned this at the august gathering and we almost filled all the seats Jeannie reserved which means that if you would like to join us let Susan or I know so Jeannie can make additional reservations. Be sure to check the ride calendar as our new ride coordinators have some nice ones planned including an overnighter to the White Mountains. If there is a ride, event or anything you think you would like to do as a group please let me know and I will find a way to get it on the calendar. If you would like to share your story, adventure, or ride with our chapter please feel free to submit them to Susan or I and we will get them into the newsletter, and if you have pictures please include some with your article. Till next month ride safe (all the gear all the time) and keep the shiny side up. Mike Chapter director AZ-A

5 From the RIDER ED Desk Of Randy Wasser, AZ-A C.E. While written for motorcyclist, here s a topic that really needs to go out to every driver of every vehicle imaginable. Many of us take our driving skills for granted to the point we have forgotten that when we are behind the wheel, driving should be our only job and thought process. It s a matter of attitude; so Do You Ride with the Right Attitude? When you decide to take your motorcycle out for a ride, what are you thinking about? Where is your attention? Are you thinking about the things you will be doing when you get to work? Is your mind playing with the words you could have said, or should have said, in the debate with your boss or your spouse earlier in the day? In short, where is your head at when you saddle up? Each and every time you throw a leg over your motorcycle it matters what you are thinking about. Whether you are simply commuting to work on your motorcycle to reduce fuel costs, or you are heading out on a week-long vacation on twowheels, your mental attitude plays a big role in how safe you will be on the road, and how much you will enjoy the ride. Riding a motorcycle is an activity that is 80% to 90% mental while the rest is physical. When you are thinking about the job on your way to work, or going over the list of errands you need to complete, or just letting your mind drift as you idle down to the end of your driveway, your level of safety is reduced. You need to shift your attitude and focus only on the ride to insure an incident free trip. So how do you make the shift from thinking about daily issues to the ride at hand? Establish a routine that you will go through before every ride. Start by evaluating the condition of your motorcycle as you walk up to it. Do a mental T-CLOCS. Look at the tires as you approach (inflated, tread, visible damage). Are there any oily or wet spots on the ground under your bike (where did it come from, is it safe to ride)? And try to be conservative when you answer these questions to yourself. Keep your eyes open for anything amiss. Then, if everything looks okay, gear up. (Of course, you should do a physical T-CLOCS regularly, too, especially before starting a long ride!) Next step, finish donning your protective outer layer. Most of us put on our gear in the same sequence every time. Long pants and boots are usually put on in the house. Out at the bike, your jacket, helmet, eye protection, and gloves complete the process. Consider the weather and make sure you have packed any other gear you may need before the ride is over. Put the key in the ignition and start the bike. While the engine warms, check the fuel level. Determine how far you will be able to go before you need to stop for a fill-up. Do you know the route you plan to take? Do you have all the necessary information with you to get you where you want to go? Good. With those aspects considered, you are ready to focus on the journey. Now, when you shift your bike into gear, shift your brain into active rider mode because nothing else matters now except your safety. All your thoughts should be about the ride you are beginning. Your eyes should be active and scanning your surroundings - aggressively! Look for potential hazards that might cause you to change your speed (by braking or accelerating), to change direction (by swerving or turning), or to communicate to other road users. A wave of the hand, a flash of your high beams, or a toot of your horn tells others that you are there. Make sure they are aware of you. All the while your mind should be translating the inputs from your eyes and ears into pictures of things that might happen next. Evaluate in your mind what your response would be to each of the possibilities. When a hazard comes up, keep your options open until you have to choose one the best one the one that lets you avoid the hazard safely and without any drama. This is riding with the right attitude - the attitude that your job is to ride safely until you park your bike and remove the key from the ignition. Develop a routine like this for yourself and every ride you take will be a safer and more pleasing ride. Ride Smart & Be Safe! Bruce & Melissa Thayer Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators

Marked as an XL but looks more like a Medium. Hi everyone. We have returned from our long trip. Garry and Kerry Woo met up with us in Denver and we traveled to Lander, WY.,then up to Jackson, WY. It was so smoky, could not see the mountains. Traveled Teton pass into Idaho and reached West Yellowstone, stayed there 5 days, saw Old faithful (90 minutes.), Buffalo some elk, coyote, huge YELLOWSTONE LAKE. Several rivers, beautiful waterfalls, lots of painted pots of gysers, rode on many roads. The last night we enjoyed the LIVE Grizzly and wolf compounds. The wolves howling at dusk was great. The last day in Yellowstone, Dave s drive shaft on the bike went out, Garry transported him on the trike to Bozeman to get a U-haul to carry our bike and trailer to Billings. Left it at Honda shop for 3 days and had it repaired. We were not far from our Wing Ding site, so we walked a lot. Had a great time, saw lots of old friends. Made it home in 3 days, despite the wind and rain with good friends. Won't be long before we will be on the road again to CA. District Rally. Thanks for keeping the home fires burning. Hugs Dee Only 42 more days to Meet You at the Beach Arizona District Rally in Lake Havasu Discounted Room rates end in September Have you got yours?

10 LEADERSHIP TRAINING Bill Trask, District Trainer October 2016 At Wing Ding 38 in Billings I was fortunate to receive the GWRRA Director's Award honoring my services as District Trainer. Like all tasks that I commit to, I have tried to put everything I can into the commitment. This year I was able to conduct 7 seminars, a Horizon Program (31 attendees), and attend training sessions at Home Office. I am currently working on setting up Instructor and Participant seminars for our District Rally. I guess someone recognized my efforts. This is not to blow by own trumpet, but to let you know that when you do a job with full commitment, you may be rewarded for your efforts. Don't do the job for the rewards; if you expect that you may be disappointed or provide inadequate tasks. Instead, give the 100% (or as close as you can) and the rewards will come to you. Each of us makes commitments to various tasks, but we do not always put our best efforts into them. That may be okay for daily tasks or routines: how many times have you put a less than stellar effort in with your spouse or friends, then thought later "I should have done better". But when you are committed to helping other people, including many you may not know personally, that is the time to put your best efforts forward. Whether teaching a seminar, leading a ride, conducting a meeting, talking to a group, or just listening, try as much as you can to be the best that you can be (the old US Army slogan). This may pay off, but even if it doesn t, people will know you are a responsible and reliable person. That is the biggest reward you can expect. Keep up the good work you can never stop learning. At this year's Arizona District Rally we will be training several new instructors and they will be conducting various seminars. Here is your opportunity to take some of the excellent new workshops that are being offered. Watch for details. EDUCATION is never-ending; make yours count.
