5 GWRRA Arizona Chapter K Kachina Chapter March/April Director s Corner By: Becky Sangster Chapter Director May is just around the corner and it is still great riding weather. We missed a few rides this month, but hope some of you were able to go. If you would like to share your ride experiences with us via our newsletter, please send the article to Nancy our newsletter editor at nancyhrigora@hotmail.com. On April 5 th, Ron Norris, Neil Hejny, Mike & I went to the Home Plate in Pagonia for breakfast. Home Plate restaurant has changed their name to Wild Horses. The breakfast menu is still Home Plate but the décor, tables, & chairs are new. We had an uneventful trip thru Sonoita and homeward bound via Green Valley. Neil was breaking in his new white 2012 Goldwing. I want to say goodbye and will miss all our winter GWRRA friends and hope they have a great summer. We will be looking for you all again in the fall or winter. Mike and I will not be at April s meeting. We will be in Vegas again but this time to watch our grandson play basketball. We will be back in time for the overnighter to New Mexico on April 30 th. Maryann Jordan has graciously accepted my request to cover me on Saturday. Some pointers concerning the Arizona District Convention starting October 31 st, 2014: 1. On the Early Registration Form there is a $5.00 discount per GWRRA member who register before July 17 th After that, there were be a new registration form and the price is $20.00 per GWRRA member. If mailing the paper form to be accepted, it must be post marked prior to July 17 th. 2. El Conquistador wants to know if any of our attendees have any dietary restrictions, such as gluten free, vegan instead of vegetarian, sugar free desert, and etc. for the Saturday night dinner. Please note that on your registration form. 3. I will let you know when the online registration is available. For members who use Pay Pal, it is still available for online users. RIDE OFTEN, RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!! Chapter Educator s Corner The Numbers Game By Bob Berry Private and recreational airplane pilots can benefit from the incidents/crashes of their fellow enthusiasts because every incident/crash is thoroughly investigated, reported and published for all to read and learn. Motorcyclists have no such system. But the state of Arizona does compile motorcycle crash statistics. Here are just a few from 2012 (the most recent available) that may provide a teachable moment as we apply them to our riding skills and habits. Motorcycle crashes accounted for just over 3% of total vehicle crashes.

6 80% of that 3% resulted in injury no surprise there. We are vulnerable. 75% were in an urban environment. In 2010 there were 158,000 registered motorcycles and 85 fatalities. By 2012 there was a 7% increase in registered motorcycles but a 60% increase in fatalities. What may we infer from this? Those involved in crashes were largely in the age group. That s us folks. 88% of riders injured were under no influence of alcohol, drugs, etc. But 46% of the fatalities were under the influence. and occurred on dry pavement. Most of the crashes occurred on dry pavement with the two most common causes being speed, and failure to keep the bike in the rider s lane. Not in this report but, from previous statistics we know that almost 70% of the single vehicle motorcycle crashes in AZ are riders failing to control their bikes in a curve. I leave it up to you to decide what to glean from these numbers. For me, it s to not become one of those statistics. How can we do that? Skill training and constant practice of the skills we learned. Riding for fun is great, but remember, you (we) will do in an emergency, what we have practiced doing. In too many cases, riders make the list above by doing nothing in an emergency. Which is exactly what they have practiced Be smart. Be safe. Have fun. 7 WHERE S JONATHAN??? Here is the first update received from Haiti, as Jon spends a week doing missionary work. Greetings from Port Au Prince, Haiti! It's been a very fast paced 3 days... sorry I haven't taken the time to update sooner - but here you go! Our flights were all full,so sleeping was quite challenge - We planned to zonk-out the 4+ hours overnight to Miami, but instead endured a turbulent flight with 'keep your seat belt fastened' lite on the entire leg. Unusual the pilot said, but coffee en route to Port Au Prince after the Miami stop, helped. Customs was the biggest hurdle - without the address where we were staying, they required one of us (me) to go out of the airport WITHOUT any passport, ID or bags... and find our contact, get the address, and return to the customs office upstairs. Thank God Liz was easy to spot in the 100+ people lining the fence just outside the airport front doors. She filled in the address on my form and a kind porter "Paul" guided me back inside upstairs to the Customs office where we were able get cleared and bring everything through.welcome to Haiti! Liz Schandorff picked us up in a 4 door 4 x 4 pick-up that can handle the very rough roads. Crazy traffic, lots of motor bikes, honking & more honking, and people lining the streets - Liz commented this was a slow traffic day - Good Friday - and most businesses were closed. Hmmm... we arrived 20 minutes later at "Chateau MAF" for a quick breakfast before heading to Hope Home Orphanage to plan our time here. Even running on fumes, we were able to get several things done Friday: Liz, Kathy, Dora (director) & Anne organized the storeroom into boxes & crates. Then they moved everything to a spare small room to prep for paint. Bill & I dove into repairs - starting with a request from Yolanda- another compassionate alien from Canada- who was leaving Saturday am. She needed some help with a child's custom port-a-potty (all the kids at Hope Home are physically disabled) adding a safety strap and lowering the headrest.we modified a child's bed for safety, cut boards and reattached a wheelchair seat. A rewarding day! B-)... and that was day the end of day two for the AZ team. Back to the compound for pizza & stories before crashing into bed. With no AC, the windows must be open. Cool breezes feel great, but strange new noises keep us alert. Day three came quick! We had a bacon & eggs breakfast before starting our day at Hope Home Orphanage. The tasks were laid out: paint the new Boutique and the furnishings, complete the shelving projects in all the rooms, and build the Rehab Ladder. The kids were more at ease and this was such fun! We were able to interact more - an Easter Eggs hunt was one activity - and get some play time in. Dora has 8 staff members and 27 residents to supervise - a job she does well and makes it look easy! After a productive day, we returned home and for burgers & avocado w/chips for dinner, with apple pie & ice cream for desert! Tomorrow is Easter and we will celebrate with other Haitians at the Calvary Chapel here. Yes, they have one here! Should be interesting in creole with a translator... Jonathan hard at work.. THOUGHTS from MIKE Submitted by Mike Hrigora Young riders pick a destination and go Old riders pick a direction and go. A good mechanic will let you watch without charging you for it. The best alarm clock is sunshine on chrome. E-Z Out Bolt & Stud Extractor a tool that snaps off in bolt holes and is 10 times harder than any drill bit.
