2 Chapter Director s Corner John Read, AZ-S Chapter Director used bike market and graduated from MMI so can give you guidance and advice if desired. You meet the nicest people on a Honda was the slogan American Honda used in 1964 for an advertising campaign promoting their Honda 50cc motorcycles. Fifty-two years later the slogan still rings true, whether I m riding solo or with a group of friends, random folks will stop and chat when we take a rest stop. Many times they will tell me about the Honda Gold Wing they once owned and you can tell they wish it was still in their garage. It is never too late to get back in the saddle and there are plenty of clean used bikes out there just begging to be ridden. Most likely the previous owner invested a lot of money in chrome and accessories so it becomes one heck of a deal. I just got a call from a gentleman in his 80s who just picked up a 78 Gold Wing with a Vetter fairing and I could hear the excitement in his voice. Spring is in the air and the touring season is beginning, plan a vacation ride to the beach or mountains as we are only a day away from some really scenic highways in neighboring states. If you find a used bike and aren t sure if it is a good deal or not, give me a call and I can go with you to test ride it. I keep an eye on the GWRRA is the premier motorcycle touring association founded in 1977 right here in Phoenix and is your ticket to instant comradery with motorcycle enthusiasts world wide. Check out all of the benefits offered at gwrra.org and you will see why we love the organization and all the folks who belong to it. Whether you join for the Wing World magazine, the great road service plan called Rescue Plus, or want to meet other touring riders your GWRRA membership is the ticket. Come out on one of the Chapter S events or rides and meet us, you ll be hooked. We are probably some of the most down to earth folks you would ever want to hang around and come from all backgrounds in life. Our common love for motorcycles unite us in what is much more than just a hobby. Our Meetup website is free to join and is a great way to keep up to date with Chapter S whether on your computer or smart phone. The link is Gold-Wing-Road-Riders/ Ride safe! 2

5 Connie Jo Richtmyre Miscellaneous Thoughts The next few weeks have my husband Michael and me traveling to and from Minnesota for personal business. When our flight landed in Minneapolis last Wednesday, it was snowing quite heavily. After we picked up the rental car, it really got me thinking how many Arizona residents tend to take the beautiful weather and the good driving conditions for granted. So, given that Wingers tend to have a good bit of wanderlust in their DNA, it seems seasonal regional weather and road conditions would be a good topic. March, April, May and even June, depending on the locale and the elevation can give traveling Wingers a gamut of weather and riding conditions. While heavy March snow in Minnesota is not entirely unusual, it did give me pause to pay particular attention to how our rental car handled, and to make sure the mirrors, seat, steering wheel, etc. were adjusted for maximum visibility and responsiveness. Fortunately the further north we headed the snow tapered off, with no snow at all in the northern suburbs. Many of us have spring road trips planned. Whether those trips will be taken by plane, bike or car, the same care is needed to remain wheel side up. Let s go over some basics to help us in our travels. Pay attention to weather forecasts. Even though the accuracy of extended forecasts is dubious, it never hurts to be prepared for possible bad weather. Hopefully this time of year you wouldn t limit your clothing selection to flip-flops, shorts and tank tops if you were heading to the mountains any more than you would leave your warm coat and gloves in Arizona if you are traveling to the upper Midwestern United States. If we use that mindset for bike travel, we would find ourselves with only warm weather mesh jackets and summer weight gloves. It is reasonable and prudent to pack for a variety of conditions, even if it means using multiple layers to equal that warm fall weight jacket that just won t fit in the saddlebags. 5

6 Connie Jo Richtmyre Miscellaneous Thoughts, continued... If you are planning on layering to keep warm, do a trial dressing to make sure all of the layers you might wear in cold weather fit underneath each other. You may find you need to switch up or replace several of those articles of bike gear or clothes you would typically wear to still provide the warmth you ll need without overflowing your saddlebags or trailer. Don t forget your riding boots in this equation. Make sure if you are planning on only wearing your summer mesh boots that you have waterproof socks or one with thinsulate in them to give you the warmth you may need. I speak from experience that wet feet in cold spring weather is not fun, particularly for a 200 mile trek. Remember though dehydration is more common in warm weather, it can also be an issue this time of year, even in colder climates. Stay hydrated. When you stop to warm up / fuel up, take time to also consume water, sports drinks or even juice. Tire pressure, as we are often reminded affectionately by Stu, is particularly important when you are traveling diverse weather extremes. If you start out in Arizona, and your next wakeup is in the hills or New Mexico or Colorado, there is a very good chance that both elevation and outside air temperature have reduced that perfectly pressurized Arizona tire a few precious pounds. Check the pressure each day, while you are checking for abnormal wear, before you go to your next destination. Rely on a good analog gauge, not just a fancy electronic tire monitoring system. You complacency could affect your personal safety, your co-rider s and any others in your group riding with you. Another topic, a quick one I promise Allergy season is in high gear. If you are an allergy sufferer, make sure to try out your medications before you travel to see if they make you drossy. Travel can be tiring enough, but adding a medication that makes you sleepy could be hazardous to your health. Have an Awesome April! Connie Jo Richtmyre AZ-S Educator 6

These multichapter field days give riders an opportunity to ride a variety of maneuvers at their own skill level, to ask questions and to have fun riding. Have trouble getting your Wing on it s center stand? Not sure how to pick it up? This is the place to learn! All riders, all levels are welcome. In keeping with the GWRRA tradition of SAFETY, all riders must wear helmets, long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots and full-finger gloves. See you there! April AM Turf Paradise A special thank you to TURF PARADISE, located at 1501 W Bell Road in Phoenix, for allowing us to hold our Practice Field Day ( PFD ) in their parking lot. PFD gives motorcycle riders of all skill levels an opportunity to practice and improve their slowriding, maneuvering skills in a no-pressure, safe environment. 17
