Bill & Susan Trask DECEMBER 2017 The Wonderful Year in R We had an amazing year at Chapter AZ-R. I ll start with some statistics: Our average monthly gathering attendance was over 58 people, the best was 90 (November). We had 23 new members this year. We lost 41 old members this year (moved, died, or dropped out). We had 34 chapter rides this year, with an average of 10 bikes per ride. Our monthly dinner averaged 23 people; ice cream average was 14 people. Practice Field Day had an average attendance of 48 bikes; with an average of 10 AZR members there. We held 8 education seminars at our chapter in 2017; average attendance of 22 people. 26 AZR members took a First Aid/CPR class this year (that we know of). 12 AZR members took an Advanced Rider Course this year (that we know of). 3 AZR members became Advanced Rider Course instructors this year. And we still have a month to go..! I am convinced that the many possibilities we offer R members are the reason for our success. When we get together it is not just a meeting, but a friendship and family adventure. It is our camaraderie that makes Chapter R the strongest in Arizona; and a place people like to be. Each member is respected and asked to be part of the family. If you have felt a slight at any of our gatherings, let me know. One of my many jobs is to be sure we are empathetic to each other and make everyone feel a part of the group. We cannot prevent disagreements, but we can lessen the outcome by talking to each other. It has been a year of change for GWRRA, as we have seen dramatic changes come at the Home Office and new directions planned for I admit I was unsure, at first, but have come to see the benefits these changes will make for all our members. If you have questions or ideas of what is happening, talk to me. I want to hear you; and hopefully can give you a positive view of what is happening. For AZR the future looks bright. We have many talented and experienced people in our chapter. I expect even more will be joining us as the next few years pass. This makes us creative, ongoing and interesting to be part of. YOU are the reason we succeed and we hope YOU will take time to enjoy our many components. Thank You At Chapter AZ-R we have a lot of new people and new ideas. I am looking for volunteers who would like to step up and be part of the leadership at AZR. We are always looking for new staff to give some who have sat here forever a break, and to bring fresh ideas into our midst. This is a dynamic organization, so we cannot be stagnant. Let me know if you are interested. I want to talk to you R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 3 DECEMBER 2017

Frank Knight, ACD Holiday Season That Most Glorious Time of Year The Holiday Season starts for me personally with Thanksgiving and being able to sit down to a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends. A time to get together with family and friends and share the past years experiences both good and bad. I know everyone has times in their life that are very difficult and trying, but just sit back, reflect and give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us which far outweigh the negative times and we all have family and friends to help us with our trying times so I wish to you a Happy Thanksgiving to your family and friends and do remember we do live in the best country in the world. We have been busy riding with our Holiday Good Times as in, I d Rather Ride Than Shop the Friday after Thanksgiving with our many GWRRA friends and family for a nice breakfast ride to the T & A truck stop and then a fantastic ride through the back roads on Vulture Mine Road to Wickenburg and home. Next came D & D s open house (December 2), another event not to miss in the future with our motorcycle friends. There was coffee and donuts in the morning, lunch served in the afternoon, and raffle prizes to be given away. This is an annual event I never miss. Then in just a few days, (December 16) is our annual chapter Christmas party which is always full of friendship, laughter and good times to be had by all. Great food, friendship and Holiday Spirit to all. Next I want to wish one and all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah as this is a very blessed time of year with peace, kindness and fellowship to our fellow man. May you all have a wonderful time with family and friends and remember and reflect what Christmas and Hanukkah truly mean. I give you this wish from my family to yours which is Love, Peace and Joy. Lastly, I want to wish you and your family a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. May the New Year enrich your lives and give you and your family love and togetherness R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 4 DECEMBER 2017

Dave and Cheryl Fowler Has it been a year already? What a great year, it s been, but I must confess, it s bittersweet for us. We are not only ending our year as COY, but we are also ending our time as your Chapter Educators. Both experiences have been rewarding, but none more than the Educator role. We will continue to be active in chapter life and look forward to new opportunities in the year ahead. Chapter life is never dull, Chapter/District/Region events, short day rides, overnight rides and longer road trips, monthly breakfast, dinners and ice cream socials. But what made our year, was sharing it with you! The support we have for one another in good times and bad makes me proud to be a Chapter R member. Do we have disagreements, oh you bet we do! After all is said and done, we pull together and find ways to overlook our human flaws and appreciate & care for one another. That s what families do, and we re thankful to be part of the GWRRA family. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 7 DECEMBER 2017

Cliff and Char Simpson, Region F MAP Coordinators Motorcyclists are out there. If you expect them, you'll see them! You ve probably heard many times that personal contact is the most effective way to spread the message of motorcycle awareness. Here are four points that you can share. Motorcyclists are most at risk from car drivers turning across their path. When you're behind the wheel of a car, please look twice before you turn left at an intersection or into a driveway. When a motorcycle is in motion, don t think of it as a motorcycle; think of it as a person. Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. Predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks Photo by Gayle Elizabeth R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 8 DECEMBER 2017

COY & Chapter Educators Dave & Cheryl Fowler Cold Weather Riding It was bound to happen, finally some cooler weather. It s time to start thinking about riding a motorcycle in the cold weather. I know we live in Phoenix but take it from me; it can get downright cold in the early morning hours. Riding 60MPH in 45 degrees will make it feel like it is in the teens, if not prepared for the wind chill factor it will not take long before Hypothermia sets in. Riding a motorcycle in cold weather comes down to one simple concept: insulation. Since most of us are not very active while riding on a motorcycle, our body isn t doing much to produce heat on its own to counteract the cold. That means we have to do everything we can to insulate the body in order to keep what precious heat that we do have in our body and not letting it just float off in the cold air. Insulation boils down to two things: layers (to slow the rate at which our body loses heat), and wind proofing (to keep the wind from stealing our heat). Let s talk about layers first. Layers are critical for riding a motorcycle in the cold weather. The number of layers you will need is based both on personal preference and the temperature outside. The key is to have enough layers on that you feel comfortable when you are outside and just standing in place before you get on the motorcycle. The bottom layer should be some type of snug fitting thermal or fleece underwear. This will create a warm layer of air between your body and the material. Some types of underwear (like Armor Wear) will wick away the moisture, should you start to sweat. Don t wear so many layers that you lose mobility. If you can t hold your arms at your side because of all your clothing, then maybe you want to invest in some heated clothing. Now let s talk about wind proofing. The biggest issue that you will have when riding a motorcycle in the cold is keeping the wind out. Wind, specifically wind chill, is your worst enemy on a motorcycle in the cold weather. Doing everything you can to stop this enemy is going to go a long way to helping you ride comfortably in the cold. Wind-proofing also takes the most trial and error to perfect. It can take a while before you finally plug all of the air leaks. A leather jacket and chaps or leather pants is by far the most popular choice for keeping out the wind. Also a rain suit over the leather is very effective as well. You will also be surprised how well a newspaper between you and a leather jacket will keep you warm. Wearing a full face helmet with a ski mask or a balaclava underneath will keep your head warm. Most of your heat that is lost is through your head so do the best you can to keep it warm. Now let s keep those hands and feet warm. Start with a good pair of gloves. This may be a trial and error process, as you want a pair that is going to keep your hands warm and still allow good movement to operate the controls of the motorcycle. You will want high efficiency stuff like Thinsulate, not just a lot of fluff. Electric heated gloves and grips can solve this as well. A good pair of over the ankle boots will go a long way to keeping your feet warm and the wind out. Electric socks can also help with keeping the feet warm. Baker wings on the side of the bike also help to deflect the wind off of the hands and feet. Most Goldwing s have vents on the bike to help keep the toes and shins of your legs warm as well. Let us also talk Safety. We have now done things to keep us warm. We have added extra clothing, thicker gloves than what we wear in the summer months, this will make the controls feel different and can be cumbersome to move our arms in the turns. The colder weather can cause mild confusion, sluggish behavior, poor muscle coordination and incoherent behavior. If you are cold and shivering stop riding and get warm. 10 The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level are increased rider knowledge, increased safety skills, and the prevention of accidents. 12 Things are really popping at R chapter. I have been busy sailing pirate ships, baking dozens of treats and getting ready for the holidays! And I m just the mascot! Can you imagine how busy everyone else is? The Christmas party is just around the corner and I ve got appetizers in the oven and a new top hat ready to wear. I m hoping Spirit or one of my other friends shows up to help celebrate. Either way, R can always use YOU as a new volunteer. There are so many ways to help. How about an article for the newsletter? I know you all LOVE your big Goldwings and you take lots of rides. Take me along and then send our editor a short story. What was the best part of the ride? Did you meet any one new? Maybe someone used diesel instead of gas??? Just a short story. Our new MECs will need a hand with ideas and plans and just getting things done. How about a New Year s Resolution to step up and help out? Maybe your gift is leading a ride or planning an overnight trip for us. Check in with R awesome Chapter Directors, Bill & Susan Trask, and I bet there is spot just for you! R Volunteers R AWESOME. Be One in 2018!!! Beep Beep R ARIZONA ROADWAYS 12 DECEMBER 2017
