5 GWRRA Arizona Chapter K Kachina Chapter October - November Nancy Hrigora Director s Corner The Chapter has had two rides this month, both of them well attended. Weather was great, roads were decent and the companionship was the best. We are in the process of planning rides for Dec Feb and would appreciate your input after the November meeting. Please plan on staying after the Chapter meeting for about 40 minutes. Sneaking up on us in October is the AZ District Rally at Lake Havasu. Put October 28-30,,2016 on your calendar. Our chapter is sponsoring the Bike Light Show on Friday and the Bike Show on Saturday, and volunteers are needed to make it happen. We have responsibilities on Friday and Saturday for the shows, that are not difficult but does require bodies. Please consider attending and being involved at the function by attending seminars, visiting the vendors and volunteering a few hours. Registration forms are online and also at the back of this newsletter. Day walk in Rally registration is available on-site. CHAPTER MEETING OCT 22 nd Come enjoy breakfast, friendly conversation, listen to informative updates, and bring all your suggestions for group rides for the upcoming months. Enjoy each ride, for even a humdrum day can have a breath-taking moment. How to have a Safe, Comfortable and FUN ride with your Co-Rider! Larry & Penny Anthony Membership Enhancement Program Directors The purpose of the Membership Enhancement Program, as stated on our web site home page, is to ensure that GWRRA members at every level in the organization have an enjoyable experience while participating in the many opportunities GWRRA provides. And what better way to accomplish that purpose than by helping those all-important Co- Riders achieve an enjoyable experience on every ride. We have a widely recognized Rider Education Program to help them focus on safety. So let s focus on, Comfort, Enjoyment, and Fun! And Riders, you are critical to the success of this experience, so pay attention. Sitting by the side of the road waiting for Rescue Plus is NOT ENJOYABLE. So, do you have adequate tools with you for roadside emergencies? Note that I said adequate the GoldWing does not come with tools to remove your rear wheel. If you have added a good lug nut wrench to your tool bag, you can re-move the rear wheel and have a fellow rider take the wheel to the shop. If not, you may be awaiting Rescue Plus (see above). Flashlight? Penny refuses to let me look at flashlights in stores
6 any more note that while LED flashlights are very nice, you cannot tell when the batteries are getting weak they simply stop working. Other things do you know how to lay the Wing down on its side to remove the rear wheel if necessary? Can you pick it back up? Do you know how your Wing should be tied down on a flatbed trailer? (I understand that the Rescue Plus Drivers are aware of the proper procedure) Training Has she taken a co-rider course? (And have you taken an ARC or TRC course two up?) Have you both taken a Medic/First Aid Course recently? Does she know what to do in the event the bike goes down? If you go down, with a possible heart attack? Where the Engine-Kill switch is? How to pinpoint your location with your GPS? Where the First Aid kit is? COMFORTABLE: This is the part that makes many riders wind up without anyone on the queen seat. Everything you can think of to make your Co- Rider feel not just comfy, but welcome. Someplace to put her stuff. Leave the rear pockets for her use, and consider getting a bag to hang from an armrest (or your backrest) for more stuff. (This is HER area; once she gets it stocked, don t mess with it!) Drink holders. Keep that mug full of ice and water on a hot day. Be sure they re filled with something cold to drink, on hot rides. And bring extra water if it s a long run between stops. Sun block. Cool vests or neckpieces for really hot days, appropriate clothing for cold weather chaps, heated clothing, whatever. You re concentrating on the road and piloting thebike; she has less to do and dwells more on how hot or cold she is! Stop every hour or so for a butt break and whenever requested to! Aside from the obvious necessity for bathroom breaks and fresh drinks, it s healthier for your circulatory system. Be careful about making overly long rides (know her limits) and allow extra time to rest up. Add some custom footrests for the back seat there are a number models available which will allow your Co-Rider to change her foot position, very important on long rides (as you doubt-less know from your highway pegs). And for heaven s sake, ask her before you buy accessories for the bike for her to use she will have her own preferences! Rain gear, extra gloves (for when the first pair gets wet, or when it starts get-ting nippy). A towel to dry off wet seats. Spare meds. Once you think you have everything you think she might need for comfort, leave some room in the trunk for the things she knows she needs. Warn her when rough spots are coming like railroad tracks, speed bumps, gravel, water, and animals. She would like to know ahead of time when the bike starts dancing around because the road morphed into a gravel cow path, or you re about to cross the Grand Canyon railroad tracks. (And thank her when she tells you about a hazard you may not see yet!) We all know we handle our bikes and trikes, um, differently when we re riding two-up instead of solo. Carry that thought a little farther avoid the racetrack starts, and double-check that she s ready to go before you roll off. Keep a good following distance in traffic, and stay in your comfort zone even if that means letting the rest of the riders go on ahead. Take good breaks, and don t saddle up again until she s ready to go. And when the weather goes to pot, pull over when you get to a safe spot or pull into a motel! FUN! Congratulations, you re outdoors! Pity the poor auto and truck drivers in their cages. You can see, hear and smell so much more than them! Wave at them; you re representing GWRRA, an awesome motorcycle association! Remember to take the time to pull over and check out interesting sights and scenic over-views. Hey, you re doing this for fun, not your weekday commute! Talk! We all understand the need for communications discipline in traffic and strange terrain keeping the chatter to a minimum, so the Road Captain can call out hazards. But chat a bit! C mon, you re on a Goldwing with your best buddies talk to them! (And be sure she has her own CB microphone Check out new places. Remember that making a wrong turn is just another way of finding something new. Have a sense of humor when everything doesn t work out perfectly. And remember to wave at the other bikers! Enjoy the ride!
7 Chapter Safe Miles Program Please remember to submit your miles each month at the chapter meeting on the sign in sheet or them to Nancy Hrigora by the end of each month. All you have to send is your name and the number of Safe miles you rode for what month. It is our Chapter Party but all Chapters are invited to join us. We made it less costly to attend, ($25 each), and early in the month, so it doesn't (hopefully) conflict with Christmas office parties and so on. We hope that you will join us and make it a great party. The Chapter D Staff is preparing a great meal of your
8 choice of Prime Rib or Ham, with vegetable and dessert choices too. We have a fun evening planned with a DJ providing music for dancing, and Mr and Mrs Santa Claus and an ornament exchange. We need all registrations and money by our next meeting day, November 12th. That leaves the staff only 3 weeks to determine how much food to buy to prepare, and make plans and needed arrangements. ***There are several ways you can handle the registration: You can do so by going online to the Chapter D website at: gwrraazd.org and clicking on the 2016 Chapter D Christmas Party about 1/2 way down the center of the page. You can pay online with the registration, OR you can choose to mail a check to me, made out to Superstition Mountain OR bring the money/check to the November Meeting, the last date to do so. **You can also register with a paper registration at our next meeting too, and not fill out the online registration online. ** In order to serve you, we need all reservations and monies paid by November 12th! ***Also, earlier on the same day, on December 3rd, is the D&D Open House. It starts about 8am and lasts to 2pm. They have all kinds of items on sale and will serve a delicious free lunch! So again, as in the past, we are having our BIG D DAY with our Chapter D Christmas Party on the same day! TOURING ARIZONA Information about the program can be found at the AZ District website (references are also included in newsletter) You will find a list of 125 places to visit and if you join the program you get the pin and can earn hangar bars for visiting at least 10 in each quadrant. This is fun, informative, and a great way to plan your rides. Enjoy the program..! GWRRA MEMBERSHIP REMINDER Need to renew/start your membership? GWRRA Membership Application is in flyer section of this newsletter. STILL need volunteers.. We are writing you today to enlist your assistance for your Arizona District Convention at Lake Havasu October 28 th October 30 th. We need two people from your chapter to work in the District Store for 1 ½ hours either Friday or Saturday. If you have a store person, that is an excellent person to help out. The more hands, the easier for everyone. They will have everything they need to run the store and they will learn what the store offers. We welcome any suggestions for things they would like to see in the store. Please let us know by October 10th the name, address, and cell phone number for two people from your chapter that will assist us with the District Store during your convention. We will contact them regarding the time slot we need their assistance. If you have any questions, please reach out to us. The best way to reach us is by at azdistrictstore@gmail.com. Thanks for your assistance in enlisting two people from your chapter to work in the District Store for 1 ½ hours during the Arizona District Convention. 9 CHAPTER PICS & RIDES Oct 14 th Ride to Basha Art Museum Oct 9 TH - Ride to Oracle Inn Off for a pleasant late afternoon ride to dinner, Jon & Liz, Bob & Althea, Rick & Mimi, Mike & Nancy, Craig & Cindy all met up at the Circle K ready for dinner. Heading north on Oracle, Bob & Carrie along with Jerry & Maryann joined the group. In a short time all were seated at a reserved table, looking over the German Fest items along with the standard fare. All were busy catching up with each other, after the long hot summer. Filled to the brim, the group headed home under an evening sky. Morning started off cool as Bob & Carrie, Mike & Nancy, Bob & Althea, Rick,Craig & Cindy and Jerry & Maryann started off for Chandler AZ. Chapter X from Casa Grande, had contacted Nancy and asked to join the group at a mid-point. Of course, the more the merrier ( thanks for joining us). The group ran I-10 until Eloy, then headed N on 87. Few miles north of Eloy, and after the required U turn, Mike Melby and Bob & Sherian Fagrenbruch joined the group. Before going to the museum, the group stopped at a shopping center for a light lunch. Decision had to be made.. what to eat since a number of eateries were available. A few miles down the road,at the Basha headquarters, the group entered the Gallery not quite sure of what awaited. There were no disappointments, all were amazed at the volume of paintings, sculptures, baskets, silversmith items, kachinas on display. A number of the artists were part of the Cowboy Artists of America, a very select group that used the Old West as their subject. Leaving the museum, with a art overload, the group headed home.
