Chattin with Char September Hello Chapter X Friends Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and chapter members of Rocky Swope, Assistant Chapter Director of Chapter M in his loss. He was a very nice man who loved his family, motorcycle and his chapter family. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. August was a busy month for Chapter X. Jimmy s Roundup in Davenport, Oklahoma was a new eating place for the chapter and it was very good. We will plan another visit soon. Our monthly visit to Rib Crib was extra special as we shared Larry Cramton s birthday and his last day of work before retirement. Seventeen Chapter X members attended Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas. It was six days of perfect weather, good food, lots of entertainment, wonderful fellowship and many new things for our bikes and trikes. On Friday, Ken and Linda Frazier joined thirteen from Chapter X to make the trip to Fort Worth, to visit the mint where they make paper money. It was very interesting and informative. Lots of money was printed, cut and stacked as we walked around looking down into the working areas. No, they did not give any samples! Not one person was a big winner at Wing Ding but there were several from Oklahoma that did win. Region H did have a big winner the International Couple of the Year, Randy and Kathy Reese from Texas Chapter O, Austin, Texas. Congratulations to Randy and Kathy in a job well done. Now that Wing Ding has come and gone we move on to the Oklahoma District Rally in Muskogee. In just a few weeks, we will be getting ready to have a fun time there! Have a fabulous month! Char 3

Oklahoma District Directors John & Shawn Irons August 2017 Have Fun at Wing Ding It is with a sad heart that I start this newsletter article with a loss of a great GWRRA member and friend. That being Rocky Swope of Chapter-M who was their assistant chapter director. Rocky was a great lover of motorcycles and was a person who would go beyond what was expected to help anyone. We all need to remember Rocky and be with his spouse Kim. Our prayers go out to his entire family and all of the members of Chapter-M. Let us all say a prayer for all of our loved ones that have gone on to the great place in the sky. As we write this article, we now only have about 9 days before we head to Grapevine, Texas for Wing Ding39. If you never have been to a Wing Ding event you are missing some great things. If you have not noticed, we are seeing fewer and fewer Goldwing businesses coming to our local area events. With online benefits it just is not cost effective for them to travel and spend the amount of time and money to make it worthwhile. Now comes Wing Ding where you can get great items at a great price. All I can say is take time and head to Texas and be one of the 10,000 people who will be having fun for 5 days. I know that all Oklahoma Members will represent us well. We are asking that you please take some pictures at wing ding so we can show others the fun that we have at Wing Ding. If you at Wing Ding on Tuesday Aug 28 th please come and cheer on Region H Couple of the Year - Randy and Kathy Reese who are up for International Couple of the Year. And if you get a chance, please give a big hug to our very own Oklahoma District current International Couple of the year Steve and Carolyn Cotton who has done a great job of representing GWRRA and representing Oklahoma. 4

If you have not done so, please be sure and get your registration in for the Oklahoma District Rally being held September 28 th 30 th at the Muskogee Civic Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma. We are having lots of fun items and know that this is a good way to catch up with many of your friends from all over the state. We are planning to have a great flag parade on Saturday so you don t want to miss this parade. Also do you like money? Lots will be given away for free. Go to to pull down the registration form. It is fun to see all of the members having fun going to other chapter gatherings. We were able to make it up to Chapter-K in Ponca City on August 10 th. They had some great games and fun with all that were in attendance. CD Lee Headrick said that they will have 13 members who will be attending Wing Ding this year. Remember if any members of Chapter K visit your gathering please remember to acknowledge them being the 2016 International Chapter of the Year. Please remember to turn in your travel form if you visit another chapter gathering. The lead changes nearly every month so keep up the fun rides to other chapters and have fun at all of the dinner rides that are done at each chapter. John & Shawn Irons Oklahoma District Directors 5

Rider Education Oklahoma Chapter X Stillwater, OK Steve and Carolyn Cotton Senior Chapter Educators September, 2017 How s Your Attitude? When you decide to take your motorcycle out for a ride, what are you thinking about? Where is your attention? Are you thinking about the things you will be doing when you get to work? Is your mind playing with the words you could have said, or should have said, in the debate with your boss or your spouse earlier in the day? In short, where is your head at when you saddle up? Each and every time you throw a leg over your motorcycle it matters what you are thinking about. Whether you are simply commuting to work on your motorcycle to reduce fuel costs, or you are heading out on a week-long vacation, your mental attitude plays a big role in how safe you will be on the road, and how much you will enjoy the ride. Riding a motorcycle is an activity that is 80% to 90% mental while the rest is physical. When you are thinking about the job on your way to work, or going over the list of errands you need to complete, or just letting your mind drift as you idle down to the end of your driveway, your level of safety is reduced. You need to shift your attitude and focus only on the ride to insure an incident free trip. So how do you make the shift from thinking about daily issues to the ride at hand? Establish a routine that you will go through before every ride. Start by evaluating the condition of your motorcycle as you walk up to it. Do a T -CLOCS on the motorcycle. Look at the tires as you approach (inflated, tread, visible damage). Are there any oily or wet spots on the ground under your bike (where did it come from, is it safe to ride)? And try to be conservative when you answer these questions to yourself. Keep your eyes open for anything amiss. Then, if everything looks okay, gear up. (Of course, you should do a physical T-CLOCS regularly, too, especially before starting a long ride!) Next step, finish donning your protective outer layer (ATGATT). Most of us put on our gear in the same sequence every time. Long pants and boots are usually put on in the house. Out at the bike, your jacket, helmet, eye protection, and gloves complete the process. Consider the weather and make sure you have packed any other gear you may need before the ride is over. Put the key in the ignition and start the bike. While the engine warms, check the fuel level. Determine how far you will be able to go before you need to stop for a fill-up. Do you know the route you plan to take? Do you have all the necessary information with you to get you where you want to go? With those aspects considered, you are ready to focus on the journey. Now, when you shift your bike into gear, shift your brain into active rider mode because nothing else matters now except your safety. All your thoughts should be about the ride you are beginning. Your eyes should be active and scanning your surroundings - aggressively! Look for potential hazards that might cause you to change your speed (by braking or accelerating), to change direction (by swerving or turning), or to communicate to other road users. A wave of the hand, a flash of your high beams, or a toot of your horn tells others that you are there. Make sure they are aware of you, and make sure you watch them. Are they putting on make-up, or talking and playing with a cell phone? Are they using their turn signals to notify you of upcoming activities? Are they obeying the traffic laws like speed limits and stop signs? All the while your mind should be translating the inputs from your eyes and ears into pictures of things that might happen next. Evaluate in your mind what your response would be to each of the possibilities remember to play our What IF game. When a hazard comes up, keep your options open until you have to choose one the best one the one that lets you avoid the hazard safely and without any drama. This is riding with the right attitude - the attitude that your job is to ride safely until you park your bike and remove the key from the ignition. Develop a routine like this for yourself and every ride you take will be a safer and more pleasing ride. Aggressively Ride Safe! Steve and Carolyn Cotton Chapter X Senior Educators 6

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATORS Robert & Linda Oberholzer September, 2017 WING DING 39 REVIEW! What a great time in Grapevine. The Gaylord Texan Resort was beautiful and really BIG! And they are still building MORE rooms. Grapevine is wonderful. During the light parade, the locals really welcomed us. Hope you got to see it online. And the Grand Parade is always fun. This year there were 177 cycles. Children are always amazed at them and that there are so many. Most of us volunteered in some way or another and got to meet lots of friends from all over the world. The guys all spent a lot of time at the vendors, finding new things they couldn t live without. Be looking at their bikes, as you will see them coming! As always, we found a place to tour while in the area, the Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth. Thanks, Cindi, for suggesting this ride. It was very interesting to see how our paper money is made. And last but not least, I have to say that we did have a little excitement on Thursday because of a local gas shortage. Some of the guys waited 30 minutes at the gas station getting their tanks full. All because of a news report that there may be a shortage because of Harvey, the hurricane, causing delays from Houston. On the way home Sunday morning, there was still no gas on I-35 in Sanger, Texas. We had to go further north to get some. Some of us (me), were a little worried! But we found some, had some fried pies for our break and made it home with no problems. The weather was exceptionally cool for the last of August, it could have been so hot, we lucked out! Great fun with wonderful friends. Robert and Linda CHAPTER COUPLE 7

MOTORIST AWARENESS Robert Fritsche Chapter MA Coordinator September, 2017 DISTRACTED DRIVING According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash. What are the types of distraction? There are three main types of distraction: VISUAL taking your eyes off the road: MANUAL taking your hands off the controls; and COGNITIVE taking your mind off of driving. Distracted driving activities Anything that takes your attention away from driving can be a distraction. Sending a text message, talking on a cell phone, using a navigation system, and eating while driving are a few examples of distracted driving. Any of these distractions can endanger the driver and others. Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it combines all three types of distraction. Sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds, long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. Don t be a distracted driving statistic! Save those pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. It costs nothing to do this! 8

OUR LAST GATHERING August 12,2017 Celebrating birthdays & anniversaries! Cindi, Janis, Marilyn and Bob did a wonderful job as DO, Do, Singers! 11 Bill and Linda Stevens September 4, 2017 we celebrated our 47 7h wedding anniversary. We are parents to three grown children, Laurie, Carrie and Justin, plus grandparents to eleven. We live in Perry, Ok where Bill retired from Ditch Witch after 40 years. He was a buyer at the time of his retirement. After a year and a half of honey do's he went back to Ditch Witch working 18 hrs. a week. Bill is a people person and loves talking to the people there, actually anywhere. Linda worked as a Paraprofessional for the elementary school for 22 yrs. She followed suit and retired a few months after Bill did. Linda enjoys babysitting for grandkids when she can. Unfortunately, they do not live in the same town/state! She enjoys small crafts and sewing. Bill has a passion for woodworking and RC Airplanes. Bill started riding when he was 14yrs. old. His first bike was a Benelli 50cc. At the time we met, Bill was riding a red Suzuki 150. He has had several larger bikes throughout the years. About the time our son was old enough to think he wanted one, Bill sold his motorcycle. After our children completed college we decided it was time for a motorcycle once more. We did a lot of looking. Linda told Bill to buy his second bike the first time and in July 2007 we purchased a 2008 Caliente Red Goldwing. Someone mentioned GWRRA at the time we purchased our Goldwing. We did some research and contacted Rick Greninger who was the Oklahoma District Director at the time. Rick invited us to the District Rally that was coming up. The two of us were greeted with big smiles and warm hugs, invitations to sit with different chapters for activities and ice-cream! This was in October. Everyone was so friendly but logistics were a consideration when we decided what chapter to attend. Chapter Ok-X was closest to home. Nov was our first Chapter X gathering. We have served our home Chapter OK-X in several capacities including anniversary co-chair, shirt/banner coordinator, gossip coordinator, Rex project fabricator and CHOY coordinator and Assistant Chapter Directors. Currently, we are the Oklahoma District Couple of the Year and Assistant District Membership Enhancement Coordinator/District Chapter of the Year Coordinator. The original two wheeler is now a trike and we both have enjoyed it and the journeys it has brought, plus the wonderful people we have met. The two of us have traveled on our bike/ trike to all of the Continental United States with the exception of the New England states. We have also ridden to two Canadian provinces. It s been a great journey 11
