Wow, already through Memorial Day! Hope you all had safe travels and now summer riding will be in full swing. With the summer heat coming make sure that you keep hydrated when riding.

3 Wow, already through Memorial Day! Hope you all had safe travels and now summer riding will be in full swing. With the summer heat coming make sure that you keep hydrated when riding. In the heat last weekend with 90 degrees and nice gentle breeze between 25-30mph, hydration was more than necessary. Check the calendar for upcoming rides and possibly few impromptu rides. The Road Captains are doing a great job with the routes. On June 24, 2012 the Day of the HOG golf scramble for MDA will be held at Tara Hills Golf Course. It is a 4 person scramble, registration will be from 11:30am-12:45pm with a 1:00pm shotgun start. $75 gets you 18 holes of golf, cart and dinner. Contact egalvin@mdusa.org to register your team. 5 Fellow riders! Although the summer riding season is just getting started, I d like for you to think ahead (for just a moment) to the coming winter and the possibility of a Cabin Fever train ride to Chicago. At this time, I m thinking in October, November, December, or January, leaving Omaha VERY early on a Friday morning and returning LATE Sunday night. Right now round trip train fares are at $140. This would give us 2 nights and a full day in Chicago to have fun. If interested, please me at cecil@evhog.net. If I get enough interest, I ll send out some date choices and begin planning a trip. Ladies of harley: Thanks to all of you who attended the Cinco de Mayo ride and dinner. It was a wonderful ride with great weather and dinner after at Romeo s was delicious!

17 Ladies of harley: Thanks to all of you who attended the Cinco de Mayo ride and dinner. It was a wonderful ride with great weather and dinner after at Romeo s was delicious! Since this there is only one more newsletter before the Progressive Dinner in July, I wanted to cover a little bit of information to all of you. We will be enjoying appetizers, then move on to the main course, then dessert followed by an end of the road location where we will take all the leftovers and just chill. Those persons who sign up for the dinner and are not hosting will be asked to contribute a dish to share. If you are worried about getting your dish to our destinations, I will be driving that day and would be more than happy to transport whatever you would like me to. Also, if you want to get it to me the evening before, I have lots of fridge room and I will pack it in a cooler and take it for you to it s destination. When we arrive at our final destination it will be the official end of the ride. Because this involves contributing dishes and members who have been kind enough to host for us, you MUST sign up for this activity no later than July 19. This is just after our Chapter meeting in July so I will remind everyone at that time and just before DOTH so everyone can concentrate on that for the weekend. At that point I will let everyone know what kind of dishes we need, what time, etc. so you have plenty of time to plan ahead. All you need to do is bring your dish, (or get it to me) and enjoy the ride and dinner with friends. If you have any questions, please me. Hope to see you all at the next Chapter meeting. Tips for Riding on Milled Surfaces If any of you have had the pleasure of riding down Dodge Street with the latest construction, you will understand why I am writing these few tips that you should

18 Tips for Riding on Milled Surfaces If any of you have had the pleasure of riding down Dodge Street with the latest construction, you will understand why I am writing these few tips that you should keep in mind. 1) Put at LEAST 2 seconds of distance between you and the car in front of you before the milled pavement begins 2) Try to ride with the bike in 2nd gear or higher - gears that are less responsive to throttle input than 1st gear 3) Go at a speed YOU are comfortable with, not the guy behind you 4) The bike's forward momentum will keep it moving forward even though it will feel a little "wiggly" 5) Keep your eyes peeled for raised manhole covers and grates - these would not be good to hit 6) The bike is steerable on milled pavement, you just need to start the steering input sooner and perform it much smoother and in smaller increments - not so much "steering" as "gliding" to a different spot on the road 7) Use your rear brake for speed adjustments instead of your front brake 8) Keep an eye on the car behind you, because you may have to slow down almost to a stop to smoothly make it over any ridge where the milled pavement ends - and these ridge's can be 2"+ straight up - nasty if hit hard 9) If you ever need to come to a complete stop on the milled pavement, look for a spot that is as flat as possible, without large grooves that can catch the wheel at slow speeds, and come to the stop slowly Since my job is your safety, please remember these tips or better yet find a different route other than Dodge Street. 18

We re fast approaching the 9th Annual Day of the Hog ~ July 21st Poker-Run and Street Dance!! With this in mind, I decided to garner a few glimpses back to the inaugural event in 2004.

19 We re fast approaching the 9th Annual Day of the Hog ~ July 21st Poker-Run and Street Dance!! With this in mind, I decided to garner a few glimpses back to the inaugural event in ~***~ It was a warm summer day on July 31 st, 2004 for the 1 st Annual Day of the Hog. There were around 700 raffle tickets sold at $50 each for a sweet black 2004 Heritage Softail and about 700 people registered for the poker run. Because the weather was so good, there were many more that showed up for the street party in Bennington. So the day included a great ride, rocking to great music with Down to Here and the Fishheads, great giveaways, great vendors, a great slideshow of the day s events, and then the great moment when they gave away the bike and that big (great!) ear-to-ear grin on the face of the lucky winner! ~***~ Derek Caster was the 2004 Nebraska MDA Goodwill Ambassador. I would like to share an excerpt from a letter his father, Darin, wrote that was published in our July 2004 newsletter: The MDA office has been great and they ve made this whole ordeal easier to bear. And with things like the Day of the Hog and people like you and the others willing to do something like this to help the MDA, it makes me feel great. Once we had found out about Derek, we thought it would be something that just us and our family would deal with. Boy, were we wrong!!! Each year we find out how many people are involved in raising money for MDA and our family keeps getting bigger and bigger. From the Firefighters to Hog riders, there seems to be more and more people joining the fight every year. ~***~ That my friends; is just a glimpse at why we do what we do. I consider it my privilege and honor to participate in this great event. See you soon! Sally 19
