1 Youngsters at the MDA Camp Get Rides From HOGs Photo By: Chuck Pearson, HOG Member Since 1955, MDA has built bridges and knocked down barriers for youngsters with muscular dystrophy and related diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp and Livermore HOG was there to help with the fun by providing motorcycle rides for the kids. Marshall and Mark rode their Urals to the camp where they gave rides to the campers. Captain America, decked out in his red, white and blue from head to toe, was there to give a hand along with several other HOG members. After the rides everyone headed up to the picnic area to enjoy some lunch and good humor fun. New York Dave stepped up to the plate and became the target of toilet paper and water guns never a good mix! The HOGs ended the day with a good feeling that they helped bring joy to the kids at the MDA Camp. 3 SAFETY FIRST Guidelines for Riding With a Passenger Article Provided by: Floyd Helmick, Safety Offi cer A few months ago, I included an article in both our HOG newsletter and on our LivermoreHOG.com website regarding passengers Tips for the Motorcycle Passenger OR, How To Get Invited To Go Riding Again. We have had recent requests from several of our Chapter members for more information on carrying passengers, so I would like to offer the following brief summary of considerations for both the motorcycle Operator and the motorcycle Passenger to keep in mind to help ensure fun and safe two-up riding. What The Passenger Needs To Know Even if your passenger is a motorcycle rider, provide complete instructions before you start. Tell your passenger to: Get on the motorcycle only after you have started the engine. ALWAYS communicate when you are mounting or dismounting. Sit as far forward as possible without crowding you. Hold fi rmly to your waist, hips, grab rail, seat hand-holds, or belt, etc. (if the passenger seat is not a touring bike type with a wrap-around backrest). Do NOT hold on to the Operator s shoulders or arms. Keep both feet on the pegs or fl oorboards, even when stopped. Keep legs away from the muffl er(s), chains, or any moving parts. When leaning into turns, normally the passenger should stay neutral, that is, lean neither with nor against the motorcycle - look over the Operator s shoulder in the direction of the turn/corner. It is extremely important to NOT shift your weight suddenly in the turn/corner. The heavier your passenger, the longer it will take to slow down and speed up especially on lighter motorcycles. Ride a little slower, especially when taking curves, corners, or bumps. Begin slowing sooner as you approach a stop. Open up a larger cushion of space ahead and to the sides. The effects of wind, especially those brutal side winds, may be more pronounced. Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles. Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation, especially when in a corner or navigating twisties. In wind, try to remain as low profi le as possible hunkering down right behind the Operator will help ensure that the Passenger is not whipped around by the wind, which could make it more diffi cult for the Operator to control the motorcycle. Avoid unnecessary talk or motion. Tell your passenger to tighten his or her hold when you: Approach any street surface problems. Are about to start from a complete stop. Warn that you will make a sudden move. What The Operator Needs To Know The Operator also needs to be aware that their motorcycle will respond more slowly with a passenger. Be ready for a passenger bump with their helmet when stopping quickly. Wait for larger gaps to cross, enter, or merge with traffic. Warn your passenger of these special conditions: Starting, stopping quickly, turning sharply, or riding over bumps. If you do not have intercom communications with your passenger, turn your head slightly to make yourself understood, but keep your eyes on the road ahead. When intercom communications is not available, it is always a good idea to set a few basic signals to communicate your needs prior to the ride. Stay tuned for more extensive articles and safety tips on riding with passengers on our Livermore HOG Website Safety Information Center page. To review the Tips for the Motorcycle Passenger article that was posted on our Safety Page in March 2010, please use the following link: Ladies of Harley Up Coming Events Dessert Social/Date Night Friday, September 17, :00pm at Portola Village 2100 Portola Ave., Livermore (Corner of N. RC s Marshall and NY Dave led us on a great ride to the world famous Warehouse Bar and Grill. They had a live band and a great BBQ. It was a destination ride where some of us enjoyed a beer or two. Back in the day, 125 years ago, Port Costa was one of Contra Costa s most happening towns. It was a grain shipping port, with hotels, taverns, and all the wild west action anyone could hope for. By today s standard s it s sleepy...but well worth a visit. Once again it was time for the Big Blue adventure...an overnight trip around Lake Tahoe. The group left at 7:30am and enjoyed a leisurely ride up Hwy 4 to 89 then 50 around North Lake Tahoe to Çarson City. Unfortunately before we got to Carson City Jack Lynch s engine blew and he had to be towed...thank goodness for Road America! We stayed at The Best Western Carson City Station where enjoyed a great dinner and some lively entertainment. Sunday we went around the south end of the Lake then down Hwy 88 to home. 4 5

6 Mini Shorts #3 Photos by: Chuck Pearson RC Dave Vincent, (aka Captain America), led this ride north through beautiful scenery in the Ukiah, and the Clear Lake area, We went Approximately 400 miles. We started early at 7:00am and return twelve hours later at 7:00pm. We ran into some fog but it cleared up for a pretty day. We enjoyed lunch at Robinson Rancheria and a couple of gas breaks. 6
7 Al The Wops Photos by: Leslie Hoex, Editor; Roy Manning, HOG Member RCs NY Dave and Don Angelo took us on a trip through the Delta to Al the Wops. Al s is a great little dive restaurant with fun food and atmosphere. It is located in Locke s Historic Chinese Town. This fun ride took us across the delta islands where we used two separate ferries to get from island to island. We all had a great time even with a minor mishap with a HOT pipe...ouch! 7

We were the first Livermore HOG Group to ride to this historic eatery. We were impressed with the private collection of over 250 specimens from Africa and North America.
