1 Issue 6 March 2018 Isle of Wight Information Bulletin Welcome to our March Information Bulletin Hi Everyone Barrie Price sent in this amazing photo of Corf lake freezing over, something that hasn t happened for over 20 years! In this issue: Welcome CC s Report Events update Corf Campsite Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Diary Dates MARCH 2018 Most of you know by now that the IsleShape County Conference was postponed due to the snow and ice last weekend. That s a pity as I was looking forward to recruiting team members for some of the activities the Media Team (and others) are planning throughout the year. There s a lot going on and we need your help to create the best possible experience for our young people and to raise the profile of Scouting in our Island communities. Thanks to James for another very productive month working on the website and new mail system, and thanks to Victoria and Alan for their help too! Later in the bulletin I ll give you a quick run down on the major events we re planning more details will be added to the event pages on the website: go to the event diary, click on an event and you ll find more information. 2 County Commissioners January 2018 Report Hello, firstly a message from Tim Kidd Hi there Isle of Wight Scouting! I m very sorry that I was unable to see you on the island this weekend due to the weather, but I hope to have a chance in the future to pop along and meet you. I wanted to say a couple of things at the weekend so here they are in outline. First, thank you all so very much for all that you do for Scouting. What we collectively do for young people is a vital part of helping to shape a great future for them and for the world as a whole. So, even though it might be hard at times, I am truly grateful for the time and commitment that you put into Scouting. Second, we are on the edge of an exciting period as we start on our strategic plan to 2023; there have been many thousands of members (adults and young people) involved to help shape our plan. We are set to provide even more young people with the skills for life to reach out further into our communities and to show that Scouting is for all! Look out for the details as they emerge in the next few months and I wish you all the very best for an exciting Scouting year ahead. Tim. Welcome to March which obviously started off with weather to remember. We are sorry we had to postpone Isle Shape 18 but we were relying on some input coming from the mainland and we didn t want to put anyone, including you, at risk travelling to the school. The training team put a lot of effort into getting this event ready. Please look out for the new date in October and rebook your place. The 12 th April is still a 20% off sale for Leaders and members at Mountain Warehouse, Newport. February has been busy for me with planning other events with the Harry Potter County Scout Camp, a Magical themed Gurnard May Queen, the County AGM and our participation in Pride in July. I hope you had a Youth Shaped month. It was great to meet new leaders at the Appointments panel in Ryde. Thank you to Mary and Chris McAllister who regularly turn their home over to us for these important panels. We have updated the questions we ask new candidates and we now include questions about DBS and any history a person may have that does not make them suitable to be in our movement. St Georges Day is going to be a mix of Walkie Talkie and renewing our Promise. At the moment aim to get your group to Newport for 0930 on the 22 nd April. Bring lunch and you will be finished by 1430 at the very latest. We will release more details as soon as we have confirmed some more venues to be our bases. Members can just wear top half of uniform. Our census figures have been sent off, it looks as though we may have dipped slightly by about 30 young people. The groups that have development plans are doing ok. What does your plan look like? I am looking forward to seeing how many Chief awards were presented in This shows good programmes are being delivered, which is what we are all about, and makes us different from other youth groups. Finally, you will have seen we are about to close the Parent and Members group on Facebook. This is because we had rather lost control over who was still active and who had left. Parents, Occasional Helpers and members under 13 are being asked to like our Public page. A new page for Appointed adults only is available, you need to answer some security questions before being allowed in to maintain the closed group. Quite a few people are saying they don t have their membership number. If you line manage leaders, please ensure they have checked their compass record for accuracy and gaps in training and picked up their unique number. Thanks for all you are doing are Magic 2 Isle of Wight Information Bulletin Issue 6 - March 2018
3 Events Run Down Here s a quick run down on the major events we re working on for Details will be added to the event pages on the website: go to the event diary, click on an event and you ll find more information. Please contact me if you d like to help. St Georges Day: (County Event) see Paul s message. Open Day at Corf Campsite: (County Event) Sat 12/5/18: bring your and run an activity for and members of the public to try. We ll be putting information on the Event page on the website. Beach Clean Weekend: 16-17/6/18: (Media Team Event) many groups run a beach clean some time during the year. We d like you to concentrate these activities to one weekend to maximise publicity for SAP Surfers against Plastic (although SAP could also be Against Plastic). Vik Mann has suggested we have a meet-up of some description afterwards. Which Day? Where? One in EW, one in WW? Anyone want to run a plastic waste related activity?. Any ideas at all nothing too stupid (we are ). We ve had a suggestion of having a beach party afterwards maybe one in East Wight, one in West Wight. Let me know what you think As we get suggestions we ll put them on the Event page on the website. IW Pride: Sat 21/7/18: (team led by Mark Hughes) We ll be joining in the parade and hopefully running a static zone to show that support every member of the community. Some of our are already making banners and other stuff.again, checkout the event page on the website. Giant Teddy Bears Picnic Sat 25/8/18 (Media Team Event) which we ll be holding at Northwood House (Media Team Event) from 2pm to 5pm. ANYONE is welcome to come,, Guides, public, etc, and especially Teddy Bears and other cuddly toys. Please check you have enough adults with your section for a public event. There will be an admission charge to support IW and Northwood House. If you re coming, please bring a Scouting fun activity (and, if you need it a gazebo) and and help raise funds. We re hoping to get some celebrities to come along too! Please let me know approximate numbers and what activity you can bring along so we can allocate space. Friday 7 th to Sunday 9 th September we ll be at Eklectica again. (Media Team Event) It s the same weekend as Gilwell reunion so we ll be missing some of last years team. Would you like to join us? Can you think of a fun activity to bring? E.g. Last year Ali brought a Nerf shooting range, we had giant Jenga giant connect 4, etc. Please note that we are NOT allowed any fires, even Altar fires. We are not allowed to sell any foodstuffs (we would need hygiene certificates, insurance, a traders licence, etc..) We may have the option of running a large campfire anyone interested in helping to lead it? Let me know your ideas quickly please as I have to get a plan to Robin Hill so we can sort out space, team size, etc. There are more activities in the pipeline checkout the events pages on the website and we ll add more information as we get it. So come and have some fun, help us with PR, and help us deliver some amazing events for our. Thanks, have a great month! MaC 3 Isle of Wight Information Bulletin Issue 6 - March 2018
4 Corf Campsite Updates I hope you like the photo on the front page I hope we don t get weather like that again in a hurry! The new Corf Fees 2018 are now on one sheet so you are able to see what we charge other Groups and Organisations to compare with Island Fees. The 2017 fees were sustained for 3 years but due to rising costs for the maintenance of the older buildings, sites and any development of Corf Scout Camp, I had to raise prices by 25p in most cases. In 2016 it cost approx 16,000 to keep the site going which includes Insurance for all buildings, Business Tax (with usual discount for charities), Water, Electricity, Calor Gas bills. As usual now in 2018 all these costs have changed to a higher rate. Also I have added an information leaflet from the Enviroment Agency of which everyone should take note of when supplying wood or burning wood a Corf please.as far as I know they have not as yet reviewed this leaflet so the law stands as this one. I will update this when the EA update. Thank You Barrie Barrie Price Corf Scout Campsite Warden Regulatory position statement from the Environment Agency Burning of waste on campfires and bonfires If you comply with the requirements below, we will allow the burning of waste on campfires at Scout and Guide centres and Guy Fawkes night bonfires. Background The open burning of waste can be an offence under environmental legislation 1 because the uncontrolled and excessive burning of the wrong wastes can cause pollution and harm health. So having a campfire at a Scout and Guide centre or a Guy Fawkes bonfire could in principle face prosecution. We recognise that certain traditional cultural events need to be upheld so at the request of the Association of Scout and Guide Centres we have expanded our original Guy Fawkes night bonfire position to include their activities. This is aimed at helping to ensure the spirit of such events can continue to be enjoyed whilst minimising their impact on the environment. Our approach We will not pursue an application for an environmental permit for the activity where: the burning of waste is for a traditional cultural event such as campfires at Scout and Guide centres and Guy Fawkes night bonfires; the waste is kept securely before being burnt; the material being kept and burned is suitable for purpose (i.e. untreated 2 wood, branches, and small amounts of leaves, card and paper and not plastics, rubber, glass, metal etc); the size of the bonfire or campfire is appropriate for the event; the location is appropriate and does not indicate the involvement of waste operators in the course of, or as a result of, their waste business; the activity does not risk or cause pollution or endanger human health. 4 Isle of Wight Information Bulletin Issue 6 - March 2018
5 1. Notes:The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations Treated wood is any wood that has been chemically treated (e.g. to enhance or alter the performance of the original wood). Treatments may include penetrating oils, tar oil preservatives, waterborne preservatives, organic-based preservatives, boron and organo-metallic based preservatives, boron and halogenated flame retardants and surface treatments. This does not include wood that has been heat treated. Enforcement In not pursuing an application for a permit, we will not normally take enforcement action unless the activity has caused, or is likely to cause, pollution or harm to health. For a more detailed explanation of this enforcement position, please see our Enforcement and Sanctions statement. This can be found on the How we regulate you page in the Business & Industry section of our web site. This regulatory position will be reviewed by October MWRP RPS 050 Version:2 Issued: January 2011 (reviewed September 2011) Corf Campsite Fees for Island 2 Guides & Mainland 3 Others Deposit Notes A Day and / or Evening Visit Per person I.O.W. 1 first visit then 50p per visit until Camping Fee Per person Per night A deposit is required for each campsite booked.
