1 President: Boris M. Struk Editorial Logistics: Michael Mahoney Volume 79 Issue 9 - Tuesday 27 h August 2013 Club Forum Sergeant at Arms, Neil Henderson introduced the night meeting which was attended by only twenty four (24) members, quite disappointing! Launch of Shoe box appeal planned again 2. Essendon Fields Car Show - 16 March 2014 Roger Priestly organizing sub committee of 4 to 6 members. 3. Men's Shed with MVCC. Site identified is owned by MVCC located near the old nursery site in Mascoma Street, Strathmore. Community garden may also be incorporated. Bendigo Bank approached and will provide 2:1 matching funding. $60K grant applied for to DHHS. 4.- Relay for Life, Michael Pepi appointed the chair 5. Breathometers still ongoing 6. Graffiti Day being organized 7. Carols by Candlelight 8. Fundraiser barefoot bowls night being planned presently. International Committee Tim Anderson, standing in for Chair of the International Committee Stephen Roe, presented a brief overview of the committee s current activities: 1. Operation Cleft In partnership with the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central, the club is moving forward to support this wonderful project. The DAK Foundation has provided $ 5,300 to be supplemented by a District Grant for which Shirley Kukk has submitted an application. The total of $8,000 will be doubled with similar funding from the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central and the resulting $16,000 will fund 64 life changing operations.

3 2. Kenya Delegation A 19 strong delegation will depart mid September for a trip to Kenya. The DAK Foundation has supplied 120Kg of medical equipment which the delegation will be taking with them. The delegation will visit the hospital where the obstetric fistula operations are conducted and will meet with the Flying Doctors Society of Africa through which the fistula program is organized. The DAK Foundation has again provided significant support for this vital work and we are looking at the possibility of further funding through a Global Grant. The delegation will also enjoy private tours of the National Museums of Kenya, an elephant orphanage and a giraffe centre. Following the official program most delegates will take part in a safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve. 3. Myanmar Our annual delegation to Myanmar is scheduled for mid late April Although much needed reforms are now underway in Myanmar, the process is understandably slow and we therefore feel that our assistance will continue to benefit the people of Myanmar for many years to come. After a hiatus of many years, Rotary Clubs will once again be allowed to form in Myanmar and we hope to play a major role in chartering a new club there. 4. Bahay Tuluyan We have continued our support of Bahay Tuluyan in the Philippines with the submission of a Global grant application to allow the installation of a lift in the recently completed Makabata Guest House. This facility has the potential to generate significant income for Bahy Tuluyan, and seeing this organization move towards self sufficiency would be very gratifying for the Rotarians who have done so much for it over the years. The annual trivia night held in conjunction with Kangan Institute will be held on 25 th October, further details in Contact in the coming weeks. 5. LED Lamps One other project we are assessing is the provision of solar powered lamps to replace traditional kerosene lanterns in third world villages. The LED lamps bring the benefits of improved health through cleaner air, reduced injuries from kerosene burns, enhanced safety thought efficient night lighting and improved economic circumstances through reduced fuel costs. The Rotary Club of Melbourne has run a successful project in Vanuatu where $10,000 was loaned to villagers to purchase solar lamps. All funds plus $1000 interest was repaid over several years using the monies which would have been previously been spent on kerosene. These lamps could potentially be used in all countries where we have current projects.

4 6. Cathy Nicou will attend the District Foundation Seminar to be held in September. Attendance at this seminar is a prerequisite which will allow our club to continue to submit applications to District and Global Grants. Shirly Kukk has previously attended this seminar and it will be most advantageous to have a second member with a thorough understanding of the grants process. Club Services Chair of the Club Services Committee Barbara Wyatt presented a brief overview of the committee s current activities: 1. CONTACT editor required for September. Please contact Barbara if you can help. 2. Membership retention is a key focus of the committee, new members nights planned. 3. District conference attendance is also a focus with numbers needing to be arranged soon so accommodation can be booked. Fellowship Chair of the Fellowship Committee Neil Henderson presented the committee s current activities: This year the Fellowship Committee during to program one fellowship function per month. These functions will take on a variety of formats and will generally cater for around 20 people except for designated all of club functions. We kicked off the Rotary Dinner Raffle. 15 couples participated. Feedback is that we should try this again- possibly March next year. Stay tuned.

Cost is $92.50 per ticket October 6th October We have a private tour of Cameron Lodge gardens at Mt Macedon. Cost $10. 7 Members Hobbies Lino Airo- Farulla Today I will talk about an old scale which I made many years ago. I was intrigued by the old scales used to weigh gold, so one day I decided to make one myself. As usual, I started by reading old books and understanding the design principal and construction. The material I used was brass with which most of this type of scales are made of. I went to a second hand metal dealer and bought a brass plate with which to make my scale. Firstly I designed on paper the scale which I wanted to make; then traced the design on the brass plate which I had polished beforehand. As you can see in the photo, that is exactly what I intended to achieve. Also you will note in the next photo a few very small weights which I made from very thin brass plate and some made from brass screws. As far as the precision of the weight is concerned, I used a very expensive and accurate atomic scale which we used to have at work in the Technical Centre. I made the pivot points of the scale with quartz crystal which I faceted. This was done for durability. On the main photo at the two ends there are two small screws which I used for balancing andmagnets to stop too much oscillation.

8 Furniture Collection A group of us have been collecting furniture and other household goods for refugees that are being released from detention into our community. Other then the empty house that various charities help them find to rent they have nothing. If anyone has any items they would like to part with. We can help you find a new home for them with someone that will be very great full. The welcoming smiles and the appreciation is just beautiful. Please contact Cathy on Australia Did you know Thought you could learn all you need to know about Australia from your trusty travel guide?think again.
