1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF ESSENDON D9800 President : Lisa Lowcock ABN P.O Box 161 Essendon 3040 Australia Contact us secretary@rce.org.au and follow us on facebook Editor Sunil Perera Volume 80, Issue October 2014 This week s speaker was Rob Slade Slade Bloodstock Pty Ltd Rob Slade gave up an accounting career in the 1990 s to pursue his interest in horse racing. He is now Managing Director of Slade Bloodstock, one of Australia s leading racehorse syndicators. Some of the most successful horses he has syndicated include Alinghi who won over $3.4m in prize money and Moment of Change who is still racing with prize money to date in excess of $1.6m. Rob was born and raised in the Essendon area and in his younger days played cricket for Essendon and football for Brunswick. Grant Sheldon introduced the speaker and a question and answer session followed with Grant as the questioner, one of the first questions from Grant to Rob Slade was, who in his view would win the Melbourne cup! Rob stated he will be backing the Japanese horse Admire Ratki, his winners during the week, Hi World Group 3 Carbine club stakes Derby day, Enquare Group 1 Myer Classic Derby day, Game of Fame Group 1 VRC Oaks day, Moment of change Group 1 Darley Classic Emirates stakes day Grant asked Rob about his cricketing days with Simon Cookson and Rob stated that he remembered those days well as Simon was not a good player at all! (what the writer heard, difficult to hear as everyone was clapping) Rob also stated that he represented Australia in the under 16 cricket team. Rob Slade also stated that qualifying initially as an Accountant gave him the business skills necessary in later years when he started his business. In answer to a question about his work he explained what Race Horse Syndication means, he also explained the important things he looks for in a horse and the Gold Coast Sales process. Rob Slade related amusing anecdotes of racing personalities.
2 The best dressed lady was Jenny Foster with the flashing lights Light up Rotary on her hat and a distant second (or first) in the men s was Dr Peter Baker with his $2 hat (he told me the price he paid) and received a disproportionately expensive bottle of Champagne! Roger Leask missed out again even though he tried hard with a bet each way (a lady/man) as you can see from the photo. Other News Anne Rogers and Judy Pepi were grazing their way around the Cradle Coast produce market in Tassie last week, and came across a Rotary Club of Ulverstone BBQ - with a difference. Not a snag in sight. Instead they were cooking slabs of magnificent (donated) Tassie salmon and selling it for a gold coin donation!!! They do this every Sunday 8.30 till Only in Tassie. Wine night at the Valley Cellar Door please see events calendar 26 th Nov 2014

5 TRIVIA FROM NEIL HENDERSON Recently I did a makeup at Port Lincoln and sat next to a member whose classification was Natural Resource Management. What he actually did was "Aquaculture". His business venture is breeding and growing Kingfish in pens in Spencer Gulf. The fish are bred from eggs 1mm in size in inland pools until they are 20 grams in size - similar to large sardines - and then transferred to caged pens in the gulf to grow to the desired size of around 6-7 kgs. This week they are moving 100 tonnes of hatchlings via helicopter into the pens. These take about 4 years to grow to desired market size. 80% of their harvest is sold in Australia, predominantly through the Sydney fish market to the up market restaurants. Remainder is exported predominantly for sushumi. From a fish that was not that popular, difficult to catch in the wild and worth little per kg they can now realise $17/kg wholesale, due to consistency of quality and supply. It takes 12 years before Kingfish are mature enough to breed and some of their breeding stock weigh up to 150kgs each! These are held inland in huge swimming pools. They have learnt most of this themselves as little was previously known about Kingfish. In comparison Blue Fin Tuna is still caught in the wild and subject to quotas. The tuna is transferred into pens after it is caught and then grown to desired market size. Knowledge of tuna breeding is still insufficient to be able to farm them from scratch. And so ends Neil Henderson's trivia for this week. Isn't Rotary amazing? ROTARY DISTRICT 9800 CONFERENCE March Hobart HELP REQUIRED AT CLUB MEETINGS The Club Services Committee needs people to help pack up the room after each meeting. Please help if you are able to stay after the conclusion of the meeting.
6 TRIVIA NIGHT BONANZA -KANGAN SCOOPS THE POOL Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Essendon Inc. Friday night saw 170 people enjoy our own Trivia master Boris Struk deliver some really difficult questions. The winning table was from Kangan Institute. Simon Cookson our MC and auctioneer was able to extract $3,000 from the major auction items and keep everyone entertained. A total of $11,500 was raised to support Bahay Tuluyan. A special thank you to all of our donors, sponsors and supporters and our long term partner Kangan Institute. Boris and Simon are a wonderful duo a big thank you to you both. 7 ROTARY MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION NIGHT The Rotary Gateway Clusters of East and West invite all Rotarians to invite friends to the major membership drive event of the year. On Wednesday 5 th November 2014 right in the middle of the Spring Racing Carnival we have the CEO of Racing Victoria, Mr Bernard Saundry as guest speaker. He is a terrific speaker and has been involved in the racing industry for many years. We are indeed privileged to have Mr Saundry take time out of this incredibly busy week to assist us in attracting new members to Rotary. Also speaking will be Dr Jonathon Kolieb, Rotary World Peace Fellow and a great presentation from the local exchange students including our own beautiful Ellen. The event is at 6pm-8.30pm at St Bernards College Auditorium, Beryl St, West Essendon. Finger Food and Beverages provided. This is an opportunity to invite all potential Rotarians to a high quality event to showcase Rotary and listen to a very topical guest speaker. Contact Pres. Lisa to register your attendance numbers.
