1 Volume 77 Issue 41 Tuesday 29th May 2012 President: Stephen Roe Chief Editor: Steve Chandler Guest Speakers: Emanuel Tumino from the Rotary Club of Footscray & Brazilian exchange student Isabella Ferrari. Emanuel Tumino is a member of the Rotary club of Footscray and Deputy Chairman of the District Youth Exchange committee of which our own Peter Baker is treasurer. Today he paid a visit with one of his club s 2 exchange students, Isabella Ferrari from Brazil, to encourage our club to once again partake in the valuable experience of student exchange. Isabella has been in Australia for only 4 months but has grasped the English language exceptionally well considering she did not speak it before she came. She was surprised to find that Australians were much like people from her own country and not cold as she had been led to believe. Her hosts have taken her on many outings such as the cricket (boring), indoor cricket (still boring) and the football (more exciting) although some sadist insisted that she barrack for Melbourne (sorry Judy Steele), so she has yet to see them win a game. However, they do play the overrated Bombers this week! Isabella has been on the student exchange safari which travelled up the East Coast to Townsville before cutting across to Alice Springs and down through the centre to Adelaide before heading home. An early highlight was seeing a sign with a koala so you can imagine how excited she was to see a real kangaroo & koala. As Emanuel pointed out Footscray is only two thirds the size of Essendon with around 50 members and with an older average age than Essendon and yet they have no problems hosting 2 exchange students. The exchange of cultures between the students and the extended Rotary family have long term benefits for both, a point that incoming President Grant Sheldon reiterated by informing all of us that he was an exchange student 32 years ago when he did 12 months in Boston, a big factor in his decision to join the Rotary Club of Essendon. Grant is keen to continue Rotary Exchange at Essendon so contact him prior to his year starting if you would consider being a host family.

2 Third Monthly Report from outgoing exchange student Ebony Gerrish: My Time here in Germany is going so fast. I still love each and every moment in Germany. I can now say that I have eaten a sausage! All that I must do now is perfect the language. Language school is going well. I have 6 hours of night classes at the Language school. I attend school on a Monday and Wednesday night as well as going to school during the week. I attended a Rotary camp at Föhr and it was very enjoyable. The island was so pretty and we had pretty good weather. It was nice to once again meet with all the exchange students in my district. In the evening we went swimming, which was indoors. The following week I had no school so I spent one night with a Rotary family. The family put on a chimney evening which I was invited to join them. A chimney evening is where you sit and talk around the fire inside, it involves a lot of talking and eating. The following morning, Boris, who is a Rotarian from my club, had a conference in Flensburg. He invited me to come along. Flensburg is the last town in Germany before the Danish border. Flensburg was very beautiful. The harbor was a short walk from the center of town. There was a street called Red Street or Rote in German. It had many cute café, chocolate and old fashioned shops. I sat in a café along the harbor with Boris Culik, and together we could see the trees of Denmark. It was amazing. The following weekend my host father and I made a road trip to Stuttgart to visit his mother. It was a long eight-hour drive to almost the other side of Germany. Although I must say I did not mind the travelling, as along the way I got to look at the beautiful German countryside. This consists of green grass, cute little houses and villages grouped together with a church in the center of town. It is amazing to think that in less than one week I have travelled from the very top of Germany and nearly to the bottom of it. In Stuttgart we visited two castles. The first castle we visited was called Schloss Lichtenstein. It was so pretty, the castle was just like what I had imagined from my childhood fairytale books. The second castle was called Burg Hohenzollern. It made the first castle look like a garden shed. This castle sat on a hill. We had to take a mini bus to the top. This castle left me speechless. I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to see these wonderful sights. In Stuttgart I tried my first Breztel, a typical German food for the South. This looks like a giant bread pretzel with a lot of salt. The following week consisted of me moving families for three weeks. One week with a family in Heikenfdorf and two weeks with the Tollhagen family in Kiel. My first week with the Culik family was great. I loved my stay there. It felt like I was at home. During my week with the Culik family I visited Rockstock. This another very pretty German city with a Harbor and very gorgeous town center with many cute houses. There was a large Easter market that lined the street with many typical German foods, Easter gifts and homemade goodies etc. I have never before in my entire life been or visited an Easter market. The lead up to Easter felt very special this year, it was not only the Easter market I had experienced that made the experience special, it was also the plastic eggs that hang outside of the trees in the front garden. I also went shopping with the Culik family, and I saw an eight meter blow up Lindt rabbit. We went for many walks along beaches and spent the afternoon sipping cappuccinos along the many beaches we had walked.

3 My second and three week with the Tollhagen family was also very nice also. My time with this family was also very much enjoyed. Together we went for a long bike ride along the Kiel Canals, jogging with the host father, visiting the host mother s work in the hospital, she is an antithesis. I found this very interesting because I am very interested in working with in the Health area/field when I am older. I had Easter with the Tollhagen family. Easter was a lot of fun because they had three children, and Easter morning we had an Easter egg hunt outside. It feels like many years now since I have done an Easter egg hunt. We enjoyed a nice Easter breakfast together before we headed off to the Wittensee Pony Hoff. Together we spent one week here. I am very grateful that I got to experience the pony farm, but I can now say that I will stick to my field sports and running. Horse riding is definitely not my thing; however I am grateful for having the opportunity to try. The ponies can gallop and trot so fast it s amazing! I learnt a lot so it was an amazing experience. I am still regularly attending my Rotary club meetings and school is still really enjoyable. I have been so fortunate to be invited to stay with such lovely families. I could not ask to have it any other way! That s all for now, however, next time I will write my fourth monthly report I will have celebrated my 16 th Birthday in Germany. I will have also made the trip to Athens, Greece with my Rotary Club. I have so many more exciting events coming up! REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE WITH THE COMMUNITY VILLAGE PROJECT FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF CENTRAL MELBOURNE SUNRISE The Community Village project has developed as a spin-off from the Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Program. Originally developed with Victoria Police in 2008, the program addresses anti-social street behaviour in the Melbourne CBD late at night. Rotary volunteers provide a welcoming marquee where visitors can take a break, get free refreshments, and wait for transport home. The target demographic includes those groups typically found in the Swanston Street precinct in the early hours of the morning, often young and sometimes under the weather, backpackers and the homeless. The response is almost always very thankful and visitors are often surprised that Rotary does this sort of thing. Our Rotary Club leads the Community Village project in collaboration with Victoria Police, the City of Melbourne, and St. Paul s Cathedral. The Club has also secured financial support from the City of Melbourne and in-kind support from Jayco and Officeworks. So far the Community Village project has operated on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm to 4am through December in the busy period prior to Christmas and has been staffed by Central Melbourne -Sunrise club members. It provides an unusual opportunity to promote Rotary to an audience we do not usually contact. Victoria Police has recommended we extend the program to cover other peak activity periods in the city the Grand Prix, AFL Grand Final week, the VRC Spring Carnival and other major events. However such an undertaking is beyond the capacity of the Rotary Club of Central Melbourne Sunrise alone, so we are keen to invite other clubs to participate by volunteering. We would be delighted if members of your club were willing to sign up as volunteers for one or two evenings over the next 12 months. We will explain more fully what is involved and hopefully persuade you to come along to the Village one evening in September, join in the fun, and with that experience be able and willing to promote the program within your own club. I look forward to your support for this worthwhile community project and hope you can favourably respond at the earliest convenience. Regards, John Meehan Tel: Mob:
