Square Dancing Friday night saw our Square Dance at the Maribyrnong Park Bowls Club. While numbers were disappointingly low, those who attended had a great night of fellowship, vigorous exercise and a quality supper. The unanimous view was a five star night. A number of members exhibited skills that they have hidden well, and of course a nameless few found the concepts of left, right, forward and back a little difficult to grasp imagine the difficulty they had when things progressed to a dosey doh!!!! PP Kevin Nolan was such an enthusiastic participant that he has conducted further research and has established that 2.5 hours of square dancing equates to a 3km run. Old overgrown gardens were removed, new sleeper landscaping and a watering system was installed, new trees planted, new play equipment installed, and other play facilities and equipment repainted. The Kindergarten is most impressed with the results and very positive comments have also come from some of the Kindergarten s neighbours. While the work was solid, there was also opportunity for fellowship - and PP Harold Simpson particularly enjoyed a situation where he wasn t the lone tradie. Tuesday Night At our meeting on Tuesday night we had a very professional presentation from Matt Francis, General Manager Corporate Affairs at Melbourne Airport. The Airport is operated under lease from the Australian Government by Australia Pacific Airport Corporation (APAC), which also operates Launceston Airport. Major shareholders in APAC include the Government s Future Fund and the big superannuation funds. Matt noted the foresight of those who planned the Airport and contrasted Melbourne s situation with that of Sydney 24 hour operations, all terminals under the one roof, scope to grow on its own land etc. Melbourne (then Tullamarine) Airport had its origins in a 1959 examination by the Australian Government of potential sites for a new international

jetport for Melbourne, construction commenced in 1964 and the Airport opened in 1970. In its first year, operating only for international flights, it saw 150,000 passengers.

This year it will handle 29 million passengers (7M international and 22M domestic). Passenger numbers are expected to grow to 64M in the next 20 years. Australians are now very dependent on aviation and, on average, every Australian takes at least two domestic flights per year. The Airport handles aircraft ranging in size from the Saab 340 (smallest) to the new Airbus 380 (largest) the latter now being flown into Melbourne by three airlines. Interestingly, 40% of Australia s international air freight departs from Melbourne (Emirates Airlines even sends in a dedicated 777 to carry Australian meat into the Middle East). A substantial level of livestock is also transported through the Airport ranging from racehorses (Black Caviar included) to live goats!!! Planning action, including extensive community consultation particularly on the issue of noise, is underway on the proposal to build a third runway intended to become operational after 2018 (to be built east/west on existing airport land). The Airport is also looking at a new Domestic Terminal in the area of the existing Tiger Terminal. The proposal will see it integrated into the primary terminal footprint and, while it is a little down the track, it is expected to cater for 10M passengers in its first year. Matt noted that the Airport is a major part of Melbourne s infrastructure, a very big employer and the subject of regular news stories. Just this week it has featured in the news due to a number of legionnaires disease cases having been diagnosed among people who have passed through the Airport, a United Airlines jet having clipped an aerobridge while parking, and because of announcements regarding Avalon Airport having taken a small step towards servicing international airlines. Melbourne Airport does face a level of competition from Avalon and there is talk of another airport in Melbourne s south east but the difficulties in establishing a new airport in today s world are immense, in terms of cost, environmental factors and of course political factors. The latter is particularly evidenced by the years of argument, and lack of decision, about a second international airport in Sydney despite the strains on capacity at Mascot, the curfew on its operations and the inability to expand its operations. Matt confirmed also that APAC is a very strong supporter of a rail link to Melbourne Airport and very much hopes it will be a priority. The level of traffic to Melbourne Airport and the earliest possible timeframe for a rail link is however such, that options are being looked at to have the Tullamarine Freeway widened, dedicated SkyBus/Taxi lanes established to facilitate on ground passenger transport.
