1 COMMITTEE NEWS PR & MEMBERSHIP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BEING A ROTARIAN? What supplementary things other than attending a Rotary dinner meeting will I be involved in if I become a member at Deloraine Rotary? The Rotary Club of Deloraine is involved in a number of projects covering the Five Avenues of Service (Club, Vocational, Community, Youth and International). All members are assigned to one (or more) of these Committees. The club has a project-based structure and members will work on different projects. The Club offers great fellowship, and is involved with promoting high ethical standards in business practice. This is one of the key tenets of Rotarians. It is the job of all Rotarians to follow the Four Way Test and deliver high ethical business standards outside of the club in your employment and whilst out socially. The Rotary Club of Deloraine has one main event for raising funds to help in providing assistance for local community projects, backing State projects as well as International projects. This event is the Tasmanian Craft Fair (TCF). This is held on the long weekend in November and starts on the Friday and finishes on the Monday. It comprises over 250 stall holders, mostly craft stalls and working craft exhibitors but also including speciality plants, gourmet food, micro brewers and local wines as well as at least one major exhibition. It attracts 25,000 people over the 4 days. The fair is held over 13 venues and people attending are bussed around the venues. There are also plenty of fun events for children and entertainment for the whole family. Members are expected to be involved in the setting up of the event and also in working at various times over the weekend. Most members end up being tired, but happy, at the end of the Monday. As a Rotarian, you can attend any other Rotary Club anywhere in the world. There are 47 other Rotary Clubs in District 9830 (Tasmania) and many more throughout Australia. The best way to locate a Rotary Club to visit, particularly if you are away on business is to check the Rotary Website and this will list all clubs in an area. COMMUNICATION IN ROTARY: Is there a Regular Newsletter to Members? Our Rotary Club weekly Bulletin is distributed via to members and Friends of Rotary. If you are not on it is important for you to let people know, so we ensure we have a printed copy for you each week. The newsletter keeps you up to date on the happenings at the club. How Do I Know who is Speaking at Rotary? We list in the calendar section of our weekly newsletter who is speaking in future weeks. We also publish upcoming club events and fundraisers. You are welcome to bring guests along to the meeting on the days where we have a guest speaker that would interest them. Remember - if you are not on , we can arrange a printed version for you. We also place the upcoming guest speakers list on our website. Are there any other Tasmanian Rotary publications? The 9830 District Governor s E-News is ed weekly to all members. 5 From DG Ken: I attended "Have a Heart for Interplast" Dinner last night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern, Hobart. It was a sellout and a great night had by all. Over dinner we got to hear several speakers talk about the life-changing work that the reconstructive medical teams undertake, and seeing the transformation of those receiving treatment from life-destroying disfigurement and disability is nothing short of amazing. Following the dinner an auction of donated Tasmanian wines was conducted in a way that was fun and extracted the maximum contribution from the bidders. Profits totalled around $3,000 for the night to go towards this very worthy cause. A big thank-you to District Interplast Chair Karen Badcock for single-handedly organising this event. It's not often that a person gets to have a free ride in a helicopter while throwing teddy bears out the window (to test wind direction and strength), but yours truly got to do just that today...and what a buzz it was. Despite the stiff breeze, all bears bar two landed in the target area after being released from the net slung under the helicopter! The Annual Kite Festival and Teddy Bear Fly-in is organised by the Rotary Club of Devonport and assisted by RC Devonport South East and it's clearly a fun day out for all the family. Congratulations to all Rotarians involved in such a well managed event and I'm sorry you didn't get to see if a DG would bounce when dropped from a great height! At the October 2014 meeting, the RI Board modified the Rotary International calendar of special observances to highlight the Areas of Focus. The new calendar is updated below. To enable Director Cindy to ensure that all is in readiness for this event, can you please confirm with her your committed assistance ASAP!!
