3 President s Message Congratulations to the Inner Wheel Club of Deloraine on its birthday, having been chartered on 19 th February 1971, making it 48 years young! The ladies and guests had their Charter Luncheon on Monday, with much celebration and tales told! (Pictured President Maureen Bennett, with Charter members Sue Poulton and Beverley Davis) Congratulations to our two Tertiary Scholarship winners for Emma Taylor will be doing a Health Science Degree (nutrition) through UTAS and Sarah Larcombe will be doing a Veterinary Biology Degree at Charles Sturt University at Wagga Wagga. This week is the lead up to the Day at the Creek on Saturday. PDG John Dare has made up a roster of volunteers and will discuss this at our meeting this week. There is much work to do, from marking out the camping sites on Thursday, dealing with the campers as they arrive on Friday and taking their money and also helping out on the day itself. It is not too late to volunteer and if you would like to help us on any of the above days, please feel free to call either John or myself. I have been looking at several weather forecast sites and they all say that the weather will be good, unlike this time last year. The raffle will be drawn at 4pm on the day by yours truly and somewhere there will be two very happy winners. I should say that the law does not allow any of the Rotary Club Board members or organisers of the raffle, or their direct relatives to buy tickets. As a heads-up, I would like to announce that on Friday 31 st May at the Rotary Function Centre, there will be a supper presentation and the guest speaker is a very inspiring Tasmanian, John Zeckendorf. John is the first Tasmanian to climb Mt. Everest and he is on track to climb all 7 of the highest peaks in the world. He will also talk about his experiences and insights into the lives of the Sherpas in Nepal. This is a money raiser for the building of a Youth Training Centre in Kathmandu, where disadvantaged rural youth (boys and girls) will receive intensive training in the trades which will lead to employment and small business development. As is the Rotary way, we are looking to give a hand up and not a hand out. This promises to be an amazing night and I urge you to set aside the date in your diary and bring friends and family. 9 Australian Rotary Health (ARH) ARH was founded by Ian Scott, a member of the Rotary Club of Mornington, Victoria. In 1981, Scott was so moved by the impact of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on families that he resolved to set up a fund to support research on this and other family health problems. This resulted in the establishment of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund with Royce Abbey as the inaugural chair of the board. The Fund offered its first research grants in The Fund initially supported research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, including a project which showed that prone sleeping position of the infant was a major risk factor. An information campaign following this research led to a rapid fall in the deaths from SIDS in Australia. Subsequently, the Fund supported a number of areas of research, including environmental health problems of the aged, adolescent health and family health. From 2000, it began to specialise in support for mental illness research in recognition of the adverse effects that mental illness had on the health and wellbeing of children, youth and adults in Australia. ARH is currently the largest non-government funder of research in this area in Australia. In 2009, the name was changed from the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund to Australian Rotary Health because the organisation had broadened its scope to include community mental health awareness and education activities, in addition to support for research.

10 Youth Training Centre Nepal The Clubs RAWCS Committee is busy trying to raise funds and develop further grant proposals for this project that is due to start soon. We have sent a letter to every Rotary President in the District asking their club to be involved by contributing US$1,000 to the project. Now you can help, we need to extend this further afield to Rotary Clubs across Australia. We all know Rotarians across Australia, maybe our previous clubs we have been members of, family members in other clubs or people we have met through Rotary. Please tell them about our project in Nepal I have made it easy, attached is a letter with a sheet on how to make a donation. All you need to do is write a short saying Hi, our Rotary Club is undertaking a large international project that will really make a difference in Nepal. Can you take a look at the attachment and share it at you Rotary meeting? Clubs are always looking for worthy international projects where they can give a small contribution which will make a massive difference. Fund Raising is Hard Work but this is easy for us all to do. This shift reflects an even broader and deeper transition, from a human operating system based on the pyramid to one based on the circle. As a society, we are gradually moving towards a non-patriarchal way of being, working and living, a path far more aligned with the non-negotiable demands of our planet. Within this context, Dr Chris Jones, an international expert on organisational change, will challenge our current thinking style, kick-start the process of innovation and help us explore a new way forward. In a unique and entertaining fashion, he will also join the dots between an archaic worldview that is still holding back society and an emerging way of operating that will enable all of us to help our organisations and communities adapt to an unpredictable future. Mathew Bugg Matt is a Tasmanian Paralympian, having represented Australia in sailing in the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. At the 2016 Games in Rio he won a silver medal, and in 2018, he won gold at the Para World Sailing Championship in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This was his first World Championship win. Matt became a T12 paraplegic in 2005 as a result of a snowboarding accident. He is a proud Tasmanian and lives with his wife Kate and Rio the dog in Cremorne.
