We have been very impressed by the enthusiasm, which we generally expect from our young people, but also by the commitment and dedication of the younger generation. I have heard said a number of times (not necessarily by Rotarians) that young people these days don t seem to have the commitment to community service of our own era. I beg to differ, as what we have witnessed is a fine example of doing good in the world that any service organisation would be proud of. The other thing that I have noticed is that the Rotary clubs that have a close association with Rotaract or other groups of young people have a certain vibrancy that can only be derived from mixing it with the young. Something worth considering..as we approach the end of New Generations Month why not invite a group of Rotaractors along to your club as guests. Better still why not develop a longer term relationship with a Rotaract club. I suspect that there will be benefits that will flow both ways and the result can only help to Light up Rotary. ROTARY S RESPONSE TO EBOLA OUTBREAK Rotary is continuing to follow the developments surrounding the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and advice of the World Health Organisation and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our partners in international public health. Although Rotary has limited opportunities to respond at a corporate level, our strength as an organisation is firmly rooted in the grassroots response of Rotary clubs and Rotarians. On World Polio Day, wear your End Polio Now pin and encourage your friends and family to do the same. You can also make an impact on World Polio Day by contributing to PolioPlus. Remember that your contribution will receive full recognition points and better yet it will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Contribute today. We are 99% of the way to a polio-free world truly, this close to eradicating polio forever. It s estimated that by the time transportation ended in 1868 (1855 in Tasmania), 40 per cent of Australia s English-speaking population were convicts. Last Tuesday night, I circulated the concept plan from the Deloraine Districts Community & Sport Precinct working group. They aim to expand the sports facilities in and around the Community Complex, even planning for a new football oval and a soccer pitch in the paddock immediately to the east of the Complex. It is an ambitious plan. With our plans to upgrade the Rotary Pavilion within the precinct, it is important that we are represented on this working group and thanks to Michael Plunkett for volunteering to take on this task. We look forward to his regular reports. Our Club s website is our electronic window to the community, and needs to be up-to-date to be effective. Can Directors please check the page for their portfolio and update the information as needed. PR Director Tim Biggs is maintaining the website for us. On behalf of the Club, our condolences to Past-President Andrew Johnston and Stephanie, on the recent loss of Stephanie s father. Looking ahead MICHAEL S MEMO Next Tuesday night we will be meeting at the Rotary Pavilion and the following week (7 th October), we will be back at the Bush Inn for Hat Night. Partners and all Inner Wheel members are welcome at both these events. And in just 5 weeks time, we will all be at working bees setting up the 2014 Tasmanian Craft Fair! Lists will be circulated at tonights meeting requesting you to indicate when you are available to work on the gates. This year the shifts will be 2½ hours duration ( am; pm; pm). Venue Marshalls: Venue Marshalls will be expected to be at their designated venue to open up each morning and to let stallholders in. Also you will need to be at the venue each evening to close the doors, lock up and hand over to the Night Watch. Official Opening/Cocktail Party: Rotarians, family and friends are invited to attend the Official Opening /Cocktail Party. This will be held on Friday 31 st October, commencing at 6.30p.m. Again the venue this year will be the home of PP Pat & Rtn Geoff Woods. Tickets are available from TCF Secretary Ann at a cost of $35.00 per person (entry will be via ticket only). Working Bees: Working bee rosters will be published in the next few weeks. Please check these carefully and note when and where you will need to be. Please note that as Tuesday is our usual meeting night, all Rotarians are rostered on somewhere on this evening. Advertising: If you happen to be watching Southern Cross (and its associated channels) you may see the TCF ad. This has been running now for a few weeks, at various times, and as we get closer to the TCF it should be shown more frequently. ROTARY-PRATT FOUNDATION Results for 2013/2014 With another very good year in the sharemarket, the overall investment portfolio provided an excellent result with a return of 18.2%. This resulted in an increase in assets of $30,641 even after donations of $19,200 to the Meander Valley Community Radio and Aged Care Deloraine. With some signs of weakness in equity markets, the Board has decided to sell down some of its shareholdings and increase its cash reserves. In the last six years, the Foundation has contributed $108,000 to improving the lives of senior citizens in the district. PP Tim Biggs Rotary-Pratt Foundation PR & MEMBERSHIP ROTARY HATS / SHIRTS After previous requests have been filled, some members have asked if they could also have a Rotary hat or shirt. If you are in this category, can you please tell Tim and he will order it for you. THE ROTARY CLUB OF DELORAINE Background Our club is one of the largest and most successful in Tasmania. We enjoy our meetings and the projects we undertake. Our main fund raising event is the annual Tasmanian Craft Fair (TCF), which has enabled the club to raise a significant amount of money over 30 years as well as boosting the town s stature and encouraging tourism. With funds raised, the Rotary Club of Deloraine has made a real difference to the town by providing seed money for many purposes. The Club is a lively one that enables members to make a contribution to the District and well beyond.

5 HAT NIGHT Tuesday 7 th October A reminder to Rotarians that Tuesday 7 th October will be a Partners night and we will be raising funds for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF) by way of HAT NIGHT. All are invited to wear a hat your best hat, your working hat, a specially made hat, a colourful hat, perhaps even your Rotary hat, any kind of hat that you can think of. For those who do not wear a hat there will be a fine (but don t think that because you came along prepared wearing a hat that you will not have to pay....remember the aim of the night is to raise funds, therefore you will be expected to pay for the privilege of showing off your hat!!) But we won t be stopping there, a few trivia questions have been organised, so brush up on your trivia. Come along prepared to bribe the judges, thereby raising more funds for the ARHRF!!! As this is a designated Partners night, all Rotarians will be booked in as a double, and should advise PP Ann of apologies or if you are brining guests. FAMILY OF ROTARY Condolences: To PP Andrew and Stephanie Johnston, we offer you our sympathy and condolences on the death of Stephanies father (Monday 15 th September) INNER WHEEL SEPTEMBER MEETING 24 TH SEPTEMBER The September Inner Wheel meeting will be held on Wednesday 24 th 6.30pm at the British Hotel. A reminder to all Inner Wheel Members that you are booked in for meetings, if you are unable to attend, or you are bringing guests, please ensure that you contact Robin Dixon on ROTARY PAVILION THE VENUE FOR OUR MEETING OF 30 TH SEPTEMBER PP Isabelle is co-ordinating this evening, and seeking assistance from Rotarians. As we will be self-catering if you can assist with a casserole or dessert, please contact PP Isabelle to see what is required. Assistance will also be required to set up the Pavilion on Monday evening (29 th September) and to help with the tidying and washing up after the meal. Again, if you can assist please let PP Isabelle know where you can help. (Washing up will be using the dishwasher which will be overseen by PP Ann). Please note that you will need to BYO drinks (and glasses) for this evening. Funds raised from this evening will go towards the purchase of equipment for the kitchen. Partners are invited to attend this evening, but you will need to advise PP Ann of their attendance (preferably during our dinner meeting tonight). THANK YOU Thanks to all who turned up on Saturday to welcome the many community members who came to view the changes we have made so far to the Rotary Pavilion. There was a lot of positive feedback about the kitchen redevelopment and the lining of the walls in the old cricket centre. I really liked John Bennett's daughter's feedback about the old cricket centre describing it as stylish and the exact look that would be sought after in Sydney and Melbourne. Such a relief to hear positive feedback as we are investing heavily in the facility to make it available and versatile for many purposes. There was also very good discussion of ways to improve storage in the facility to make our assets easy to store and locate. A very positive morning and thanks again to our members who gave up their Saturday morning and to our members who have put in an enormous amount of time, thought, energy and more to get it to this stage.
