1 Bulletin Volume 84 No.26 January Rotary Club of Sale Rotary District 9820 Incorporated Last Meeting Monday January 14 Club night Relish at the Gallery President Lyndon, who has been far from well over the festive period, welcomed everyone and thanked members for the best wishes that had been extended to him while he was in hospital. He mentioned that Mike Smith and Margaret Vitlin have also been unwell. A number of members gave short presentations on things will be important to our club in coming weeks and months. They are listed below commencing with details of our next meeting. Next Meeting January 21 Visit to Seaspray Surf Lifesaving Club 6:30pm Kevin Maxfield outlined our annual night at Seaspray, which will also be attended by members of the Sale Central Club. Several bright young lifesavers will speak to us and possibly a member of the Progress Association will inform us about the changes at Seaspray, including the relocation of the caravan park. Cost: $30 This is always a good night contact Kevin immediately if you wish to attend and have not yet notified him. Kevin Maxfield
2 2013 Australia Day Celebrations Botanical Garden 9:30am Saturday January 26 Our Rotary Club will again host the Australia Day Celebrations. Alan Lewis has been working hard to organise another outstanding event. He has enlisted help from Club members who are able to be present and all appears to be in order. If you have any questions or concerns contact Alan Lewis A program appears near the end of this Bulletin. Bowls Night to raise funds for the Monday Tucker program (a weekly meal for the needy) Adrian Rijs drew our attention to a Crackerjack style night to be held next week. Date: Thursday 24 Jan 2013 Time: 5:30 for 6:00 pm start Venue: Lakeside Bowls Club corner of Foster Street and Guthridge Parade Cost: $7 per person Bring flat-soled shoes or play barefoot A sausage sizzle and drinks will be available. Dinner at the Bistro is also an option. (Booking a table would be a wise idea.) District Conference Geelong February Adrian mentioned that anyone still wishing to attend should contact Secretary Laurie immediately.!!"##$%#&'%($'%"()*%$"'+!
3 Relay for Life raising funds for Cancer Research Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March Adrian also gave advance notice of this event, which will come around surprisingly quickly. The aim is for our Club to raise at least $5000 and members are encouraged to seek sponsorship for their walk, for example, $10 for each lap of the greyhound track. Adrian will organise a raffle to raise funds for our Club s contribution to Relay for Life. It would be excellent if a Club member could provide a caravan or tent to place on the grass in the centre of the track, which can be the Rotary Club of Sale HQ over the weekend a spot for rest, refreshment and friendship, while enjoying the organised entertainment. This may be an opportunity to publicise the Rotary Fundraising Event to be held in May. Other fundraising suggestions will be welcomed. Some members have already made a commitment to walking for an hour or two but there are plenty of slots left. The relay commences at 2pm on Saturday and finishes at 10 pm Sunday. Contact Adrian if you want to walk Yachting Victoria Discover Sailing Day January 26 Lake Guthridge jetty Neil Ross invited Rotarians to attend this event following the Australia Day celebrations at the nearby Botanical Garden. Neil is the Commodore of the Lake Wellington Yacht Club, based at Marley Point. The yacht club is organising this event at Lake Guthridge because it offers better accessibility for the community than the more distant Lake Wellington. The small, easy to sail, yachts from Sailability will be used to introduce the us to yachting. Sailability is a world-wide program to give young people with disabilities the opportunity to sail, with all the benefit that comes from achievement. Neil has worked very hard for Sailability in Sale and we are proud of the great work he has done for those with different abilities. Take a few minutes to walk over to the jetty, to say hello and see the yachts who knows, you may go for a sail you might even get wet! Freedom on the water
4 National Youth Science Forum Perth January Monday 14 Saturday 26 Sharyn Bolitho informed us that Megan Osmand, our chosen student, is in Perth attending this forum, which could be a life-changing experience for her. Megan will speak to us of her experience on Monday February 18. River Heritage Trail Alan Lewis informed us that the water has finally subsided enough to make it possible to walk to the Swing Bridge. The trail has suffered considerable damage in places and Alan is working towards a grant to cover costs of repair. There may well be scope for Rotarians to be involved in the restoration of the trail in a hands on way. It is also exciting to report that a second trail is being constructed, close to the Thomson River, as part of the South Gippsland Highway redevelopment. This will give walkers more options when venturing into the wonderful Sale Common. Another project that our Club could undertake is the planting of local native trees and shrubs in the Common between the new roadway and the original River Heritage Trail to help to isolate the trail from the now, much closer and higher road. Clearly, any work will be undertaken when the weather is cooler, in autumn and winter let s hope summer doesn t end with another flood! Rotary Club of Sale ~ Special Fundraising Dinner Saturday May This event will be the replacement for our traditional Dinner Auction A small committee of Club members is planning it at present There may be an auction component on the night but there will be much more This will be an exciting night where we interact with our friends in the community This is our major fundraiser mark it in your diary now More details soon there will many opportunities to help make this a great night
