It was fantastic to hear so much more about The Man behind the Badge. Larry is a wonderful new member of this Club & hearing about his life certainly gave us a further insight to someone who is certainly "Making a Difference" in this world. Later in this edition you will read more about the talk & about Larry s involvement with the organisation Bridging Lanka. We were also privileged to hear from Larry s colleague Jeremy Liyanage, about the much needed work being done in their country of birth, Sri Lanka. Hopefully everyone read Networker online this week. If you did you will have been excited to see 2 articles that mention the Rotary Club of Essendon: David Abbey receives Royce Abbey Award Rotary Club of Essendon invests daughters as President and Vice President 1 - see below articles

Both articles highlight how fantastic it is to see parents & then their children proudly also involved in Rotary. Maybe this Club has more 'Next Generation sons & daughters, nieces & nephews, waiting to be invited to a meeting. How about you consider next week bringing them along to celebrate Father s Day & hear Ben Mabon, National Mentoring Co-Ordinator for LADDER - AFL Players tackling youth homelessness. It was also a pleasure to be invited to speak at PROBUS Essendon Central this week. A Probus Club started by this Club back in 1990 which now numbers 94 members. What a lovely group of people I met & they were all so pleased to hear about Rotary Essendon. Both Clubs agreed we need to be sharing events & information more regularly. Thank you to President Sue Hurren & VP Irene Lantern for the Invitation. Want to know more, please go to our Webpage -> Home Page -> More Pages -> Probus. This week we also started to see changes starting to occur on our Website & have you visited our new Facebook Page yet? Make sure you do, LIKE us & invite all your friends to LIKE us also! We want everyone to know who we are & want to come along & join us. Thank you to the Public Image Task Team!! Have a fantastic week ahead! Kind Regards President Jenny THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Just don t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there s love & inspiration, I don t think you can go wrong Ella Fitzgerald Saturday, 26 August at 1:00pm (for arrival at 2pm) AFTERNOON TEA at Children First Foundation's "THE RETREAT" in East Kilmore - the home for children from many locations around the world where they live while they receive life-changing medical operations (or as the sign still says 'Rotary's 1st Farm') We will meet at Essendon Baptist Church, 134 Buckley Street, Essendon at 1:00pm to car-pool. Members from Rotary Club of East Keilor will also be visiting with us. The children will be making the afternoon tea & telling us their stories. Come along to inspect this fantastic facility to see how a Rotarian donated the land & Rotary Clubs built the home. Today they need some assistance with maintenance so this visit will give us the opportunity to see how Rotary can again help & perhaps work towards their new vision to expand the facility. All members & family are invited. What a fun time we will have! Please advise Jane Carbone or myself tomorrow at the meeting or contact Jane Carbone on carbone.jane@gmail.com or to advise if you are joining us please. We would be arriving at The Retreat at 2pm. Please advise Jenny Foster on One of many wonderful stories to be heard: Speaker for the day - Larry Marshall Larry is a proud Australian. He is also a proud Sri Lankan, and has spent extended periods each year working deeply with people and communities in post-war Sri Lanka. Larry was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka as one of 5 children. Larry s family (including himself and his 4 sisters) migrated to Australia in His parents could smell the conflict in the area, and the tensions which would eventually lead to a 26 year long civil war were already starting to brew. The Marshall family settled in Essendon, and Larry attended Buckley Park High (with Maria and Neal), and later completed his BA at La Trobe in Politics. Aside from his eldest sister, all the Marshalls remain settled in the Essendon area, about 5 minutes drive from each other! Larry s first career was as a secondary school teacher in economics and politics. He started in Scoresby, but found a home at Williamstown High. By the 1980s Larry was becoming more involved in social activism, and community development. He was involved in the Save the Franklin River and Kakadu campaigns; but it was the 1985 Rainbow Warrior incident, which triggered his passion in the Anti-Nuclear Movement, where he joined and then led the Movement Against Uranium Mining (MAUM). Back in his homeland, the civil war broke out in 1983 between the Sinhalese government forces and the minority Tamil activists (LTTE). The war was to last 26 year it was violent, and brutal, and built hatred and mistrust throughout the island. It also seriously damaged the institutions of government, media, courts, and justice system. It was a ruthless war and over 100,000 people died, or went missing. By the mid 1980s, Larry and his wife Gwen Gibbon accepted a four year development-worker placement in the Philippines with Australian Volunteers Abroad (now known as Australian Volunteers International). There, Gwen and Larry were married, and

also they welcomed their first child their son Jesse. When they returned the family back to Australian in the early 1990s, their daughter Alinta was born and it was Larry who chose to be a stay-at-home parent, while Gwen continued her work with AVI. Through the 1990s, Larry took part-time work at TAFE, teaching community development, and completed his Masters Degree in Media and Communications. He also spent time as a radio journalist with community radio, and later with the ABC where he was the presenter on Radio Australia s Indian Pacific Affairs. He then returned to teaching at both Victoria University and at La Trobe University. In 1997 Gwen was diagnosed with breast cancer. After her treatment, and during her recovery, the family decided to travel around the world for 5 months on A Trip of a Lifetime. As Gwen s recovery continued, Larry entered into his PhD studies, exploring Peace Strategies in Sri Lanka. By 2004 Gwen s cancer had returned, and she was able to spend her final months at home with young Jesse and Alinta by then, 11 and 15 years old. Now needing to return to the workforce in a full-time capacity, Larry started a position with the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University. He coordinated the Muslim Leadership Training Program for 5 years; he taught peace studies with Hiroshima University annually in Japan; and he chaired dialogues between conflicted members of the Sri Lankan community. In 2009 he married Cynthia Mackenzie a Canadian with a passion for social justice issues also marked the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, and the beginning of a long road to peace-building and reconciliation. Together, Larry and Cynthia have organized tours back to Sri Lanka; have hosted a Reconciliation Journey for members of the diaspora; have participated in meetings, and pilgrimages; and have conducted several research projects in the island. Larry also coordinates an annual Sri Lankan Harmony Day in Melbourne. Larry is currently working for the Synod of the Uniting Church, Victoria and Tasmania, as the Program Manager for Uniting through Faiths. As an interfaith worker, Larry brings people of faith (both religious and non-religious) into conversation. His son Jesse is now a lawyer, with Consumer Action Law Centre; and his daughter Alinta is finishing a degree at La Trobe University, in Sociology and Gender Studies. Larry Marshall giving his Badge talk Jeremy Liyanage talking about the project Bridging Lanka

David Abbey receives Royce Abbey Award Lisa Lowcock, Rotary Club of Essendon On Sunday August 6th, 2017, RI President Ian Riseley and Juliet attended a special Royce Abbey event at International House. The event was to present the latest Royce Abbey award and the surprised recipient was David Abbey, son of Royce and Jean. Organised by Rotary Club of Essendon s Roger Leask and PDG Cathy Roth, the event was held in front of an elite group of Rotarians including every Victorian Rotary District Governor, their partners, Jean Abbey, David s wife Cindy, their Japanese Exchange student and members of the Royce & Jean. Abbey Committee. As far as David was concerned, the event was to promote the Royce Abbey Scholarship and the Royce Abbey Award to District Governors across Victoria. To have our own Rotary International President Ian Riseley there to make the presentation made the day even more special. The Royce Abbey Award is presented to individual Rotarians in recognition of their enthusiasm and commitment to Rotary. Maurice remembers Our Club has also welcomed families with more than a dozen Rotarians proposing their sons for membership. Andrew Showers was the first sibling to be nominated, the son of Arthur Showers. Herb Allison proposed his son Graeme who went on to become District Governor. John Green joined the Club through his Dad Arthur and was President in We remember John and Barry Keam, Stewart and George Strack, Jim and Glenn Smith. Glenn was President in Ray and Larry Whiting have their father to thank for their membership of the Rotary Club of Essendon. Remember panel beaters Alan and Chris Stuckey, Eric and Rick Stinton, newsagents and card shop retailers in Puckle street Vic and Peter Nicholls. And the Muirs, Ian and Andrew. It was Ian who saw the Club raise funds to help build the Royal District Nursing Service. They were Good Guys in both their careers and as individuals. Lisa Lowcock followed her father Norm as a Rotarian while Marge Sheldon and Pat Chadderton persuaded their husbands to nominate their children to our Club. So we are indebted to these members for their service to the Club. Now who will be first female member to nominate their son or daughter?

Rotary Club of Essendon invests daughters as President and Vice President When Doug Killeen, Norman Mollica and Maurice Mollica each joined Rotary over 45 years ago women were not even permitted to be Rotarians. They would never have imagined how far Rotary would change to this day when recently each was at the Rotary Club of Essendon to celebrate their daughters and niece being inducted as President and Vice President! Jenny Foster, daughter of PP Doug, was inducted as the 83rd President and PP Lisa Lowcock, daughter of Norm and niece of PP Maurice, was inducted as the Vice President at the Rotary Club of Essendon s changeover meeting on July 4th Both have grown up with the marvellous examples of their fathers and uncle actively demonstrating Service Above Self by their lifelong commitment to Rotary. And each found themselves marrying likeminded Rotary affiliated men one of whom was a Rotary exchange student and the other a Rotaractor like herself. If we dare to add up our combined years of service through Rotary we easily reach over 200 years! Jenny and Lisa remember fondly going to Rotary meetings as young girls and hearing too many Dad jokes, but also being influenced by great men doing great things in their local and international communities. It is no surprise then that they both found that when it came to their time to commit to Making a Difference as our current RI President Ian Riseley suggests, that Rotary was the way to do it. After all, it s all in the family. And what a great family Rotary is.
