2 FORUM SPEAKERS Scott Bacon MP Minister for Tourism, Minister for Hospitality Official Opening - 9:30am Scott Bacon was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1977 and moved to Tasmania in After moving to Tasmania, Scott was educated at Campbell Street Primary, Cosgrove High School and Elizabeth College, before attending the University of Tasmania and completing a degree in Economics. He has worked in business for the Commonwealth Bank and Perpetual Trustees and for Government at the Department of Treasury and Finance. Scott was elected into the Tasmanian House of Assembly in March 2010, in the electorate of Denison and was subsequently appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Treasury. Scott was promoted to Cabinet and sworn in as Minister for Tourism, Minister for Veterans Affairs and Minister for Hospitality on 13 May In the time Scott has been Minister he has had a chance to talk with many operators and in all regions of the State. This has provided a first-hand insight into the challenges being faced by the industry. Scott considers it a privilege to be Tourism Minister and is continuing to work with the tourism industry to build a stronger and more sustainable tourism sector for the future. Tony Mayell CEO Tourism Tasmania The new world of Regional Tourism 10.00am Tony Mayell is the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Tasmania. Mr Mayell has extensive experience in tourism and travel industry organisations in the private and public sectors and has worked in the areas of travel, tourism operations and distribution, transport logistics and tourism policy development and implementation. Prior to joining Tourism Tasmania in May 2011, Tony was Executive Director Southern Region, with the Northern Territory Department of Chief Minister, and before this held the position of Resort General Manager at Voyages Ayers Rock Resort. He has held a number of other senior positions including Managing Director, Online and Domestic for the AOT group and General Manager Europe for the Australian Tourism Commission, based in London. Previous to this Tony spent five years as Managing Director of the Northern Territory Tourism Commission, during which time he was Chair of the Northern Territory Aviation Committee, a Board member of the Northern Territory Conservation Commission and a member the Government Central Coordination Committee, the Chief Ministers Aboriginal Development Forum and the Australian Standing Committee on Tourism. Tony has also spent five years with Tourism Victoria holding the positions Assistant Director of Product Marketing and General Manager of International Marketing, and worked with both TAA and Ansett.
3 Richard Dax Chairman Cradle Coast Regional Tourism Executive; Cradle Coast Regional Tourism Bring it on - 10:30am Richard has been a leading figure in the Australian hospitality and tourism service sector for over 45 years and has developed and managed successful catering businesses including Richard Dax Catering Pty Ltd which serviced private events, public functions and corporate catering. Richard s experience on boards and committees in the Tasmanian tourism industry is considerable. He has served as a Director of TICT almost from its commencement. During that time he worked on many sub committees on behalf of the board including as Chair of the Tourism/ Forestry Industries Protocol Committee, Chair and Judge of the Tasmanian Tourism Awards as well as national judging and policy setting, and as a member of both the TICT finance and governance committees. Richard has been a board member and then Chairman for some years of Tasmania s Southern Region Tourism Association and the Hobart Travel centre. He has also initiated, co-written and administered Tasmania s Recreational Fishing Tourism Development and Marketing Plan. A Ministerial award for industry contributions has been awarded to Richard in recognition of his exceptional work in the tourism sector of Tasmania. Adam Sproule Acting/Director Operation and Planning, Tourism Tasmania Delving Into Tourism Tasmania s Extensive New Research - 11:20am Adam is responsible for overseeing the activities and programs of the Operations and Planning Unit, which includes its business services, corporate media and industry communications and its market research activities. Major activities include the delivery of corporate support services, industry and media liaison, and interpreting tourism trends, performance and markets. Tourism Info Monitor: The Tourism Info Monitor (TIM) is a market research tool used by Tourism Tasmania to monitor the state s tourism performance and gain a deeper understanding of potential interstate visitors to Tasmania
4 Kathryn McCann Director Marketing, Tourism Tasmania Marketing Tasmania: Looking Ahead With a Clear Vision - 11:50pm Kathryn manages the Marketing Unit, responsible for promoting Tasmania as a holiday destination and stimulating travel to our state. She oversees four marketing teams within her unit - Media and Public Relations, Marketing Operations, Digital and Distribution, and Sector and Niche Marketing. These activities include developing the strategy and annual plan, which outlines targets for the entire marketing unit as well as specific areas like distribution, campaigns, brand, sector and niche, international, public relations, research/measurement and communications. Tourism Info Monitor: The Tourism Info Monitor (TIM) is a market research tool used by Tourism Tasmania to monitor the state s tourism performance and gain a deeper understanding of potential interstate visitors to Tasmania Luke Martin CEO, Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) Lunch with Like - 12:20pm Luke Martin was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania in March Luke grew up in the tourism and hospitality industries, working in his family s accommodation businesses in Hobart from a young age, as well as the Moorilla winery while attending University. He has returned to the Tourism industry with a diverse range of experiences across government, the corporate and community sectors. Luke worked as an Adviser to former Tasmanian Premiers Jim Bacon and Paul Lennon. He then managed policy and communications for TasCOSS, the peak industry body for the Tasmanian community services industry, before crossing over to work as a consultant with CPR Corporate & Public Relations in both Tasmania and South Australia. An unashamed passionate Tasmanian, Luke is quickly discovering the best part of his job is being out on the road rediscovering the many jewels around our incredible island and getting to meet the tourism operators who are so enthusiastic about our industry. Outside his day job, Luke is active in his local community as an Alderman on the Glenorchy City Council and sits on the boards of several community organisations. He is also kept busy with his newborn baby daughter, Ava, and following the mixed fortunes of his beloved St. Kilda and Glenorchy Football Clubs.
5 Geoff Harris Vice President Hawthorn Football Club 20 Leadership tips from 30 years of Business Experience - 1:20pm Geoff Harris was a founding partner of Flight Centre commencing 1982 starting with $3,000 to open first Flight Centre in Melbourne. Geoffs shares in Flight Centre are now worth $310mil, Flight Centre is now the fourth largest Retailer in Australia on Market Capitalisation Geoff stepped back from the business in 1998 and remained on the board to 2008 as a Non-Executive Director of FCL to focus on Community activities, New business startups, and the Hawthorn FC. In 2001 Joined Janine Allis as a Co-Director and Major shareholder in growing Boost Juice from 5 shops to 240 Company and Franchise shops before selling majority of shares to a private equity company for $65M in In 2002 assisted Jim Stynes and Paul Currie in setting up the Reach Foundation by Purchasing their headquarters an old 3 level wharehouse in Collingwood in Melbourne and converting it. This building now houses Reaches Head Office and does courses for approx 20,000 kids per year in its workshops. Geoff rents it to Reach for $5.00 per year. In 2003 Geoff purchased Top Deck Travel UK (when in receivership), with 5 other shareholders and is a Co-Director with CEO James Nathan, Top Deck UK which competes against Contiki Tours currently has 80 busses in Europe and made a profit of $5.2mil pounds last year. Joined the board of the Hawthorn FC in 2004 and is currently Vice-President Geoff is donating his time this morning to support Regional Tourism in Tasmania and the local community. Denise Castro Industry Development Manager, Destination Melbourne Discover Your Own backyard - 1:50pm Denise Castro leads Industry Development at Destination Melbourne with energy and enthusiasm. Recent achievements include: direct involvement in development and delivery of: the Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Program and associated Graduate Mentoring Program from inception; Co-ordination of the Destination Melbourne Local Government Tourism Engagement Strategy and Victoria Tourism Week. Denise s latest project is the development and delivery of Melbourne s new VFR campaign Discover Your Own Backyard in partnership with local councils from across the whole of Melbourne. Denise is an active member of the Australian Tourism Accreditation Program Panel, and Economic Development Australia.

Prior to this, Daniel was the Chief Executive with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania an industry association representing the interests of tourism operators for three and a half years. From 2003 to 2007, Daniel was the General Manager of the Australian Hotels Association in Tasmania. From 1991 to 2003, Daniel worked with the Commonwealth Government. Largely based in Canberra, Daniel held senior positions within the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and the Department of Finance. Prior to returning to Tasmania, Daniel was a Director within the Budget Group of the Department of Finance in Canberra. Daniel holds an honours degree in Political Science from the Australian National University and will soon complete (hopefully) a PhD in Political Science at the University of Tasmania.
