President Report 2009 Paul Brushe The Executive Committee of SWYAustralia appreciates our member s ongoing support over the past year, and what a year 2009 was. It was a year of many firsts for SWYAustralia. The year saw a tremendous period of growth for SWYAustralia and we were able to demonstrate our ability to come together and successfully manage numerous events. We held our inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Brisbane on Saturday, 28 th March This forum was well supported by members and provided an opportunity to create a new charter, review the strategic plan, and review the membership structure. Another first for SWY Australia saw a number of members attended the post-agm reunion dinner to re-live past experiences and create new ones. We look forward to seeing many more members joining us at our next AGM to be held in Melbourne on Saturday, 8 th May At the conclusion of the AGM, members can join the Committee at a dinner to be held at a nearby restaurant. Details will be posted to members soon. One of the most exciting and successful events was the hosting of the 3 rd SWYAA Global Assembly and was SWYAustralia s first ever Global Assembly. This event was the culmination of 12 months of hard work. Twenty ex-pys from across the globe including Peru, Chile, Philippines, New Zealand, Japan and Australia came together. Together, we experienced Brisbane, learned more about what ex-pys are doing around the world in support of their communities, participated in a range of activities including witnessing an Australian Citizenship ceremony and ultimately recreated the SWY love and the SWY spirit that the SWY program is renowned for. For more information on the 3 rd SWYAA GA refer to the report within this Newsletter. The 3 rd SWYAA GA demonstrated SWYAustralia member s ability to come together with the support of ex-pys, family and friends and to give back to our community in a meaningful way. The 3 rd SWYAA Fundraising dinner, attended by over 45 people, raised $AUS3480 in support of the Royal Brisbane Women s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation and research into Adolescent Mental Health. This initiative was the first time SWYAustralia proactively worked to raise money for a community based group. From reports of those who attended, this event was one to remember and SWYAustralia will be looking forward to holding many more events like this into the future. This year SWYAustralia supported the Embassy of Japan in the selection of the SWY22 delegation for SWYAustralia and the Embassy of Japan (Canberra) undertook the selection of an Australian delegation, without any support from the Australian Government. Thank you to the SWYAustralia members who committed a large amount of personal time to review over 180 applications. The SWY22 delegation was announced in October 2010 The delegation has been working hard to seek sponsorship and prepare for the SWY22 program. I was invited to speak to SWY22 delegation in Brisbane recently and used this opportunity to promote
SWYAustralia, how we have developed and the opportunities we provide post -SWY program. The SWY22 delegation was most interested in the role SWYAustralia plays. Don t forget to book your flights for the AGM in Melbourne on the 8th May 2010, I look forward to seeing you there and please do renew your financial memberships. What a year 2009 was! I hope you are now making the most of VP Members and Finances Report Paul Brushe 0910 has been a great year for membership commencements and renewals. The Executive Committee has worked to deliver communications to our current financial members on the activities of Our aim has been to provide our financial members with a differentiated level of involvement with the Executive Committee. Special Events AGM Reunion Dinner This event was attended by a number of financial and non financial members of SWY. It was a fantastic night and we were able to raise a small amount in support SWYAustralia activities. 3rd SWYAA Global Assembly The success of the 3rd Global Assembly and reunion dinner was achieved without incurring a loss. The financial challenges we faced in co-hosting this event was substantial. The 3 rd SWYAA GA subcommittee were all very pleased when on finalisation of the accounts we made a small profit. This was despite a negative 20% fluctuation in the Australia dollar and comparable exchange rates, accommodation charges which had to be covered in consideration of every changing numbers and the expenses incurred by members to ensure the event was a total success. 3rd SWYAA Global Assembly Fundraising Dinner The support we received from the people who attend the 3 rd SWYAA GA, both expys and members of the Brisbane Community, was exceptional. SWYAustralia was very excited that we were able to successfully organise the 3 rd SWYAA GA Fundraising Dinner. This event raised $3480 for the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation. This event had a neutral impact to our finances, as all proceeds went the RBWH Foundation VP Communications Report Adam Wood 2009/10 has been a huge year for SWYAustralia in terms of the number of events and activities run by the alumni. We couldn t have done this without the support that many ex-pys provided to SWYAustralia. The four key events that needed to be promoted have been the inaugural SWYAustralian AGM, the 2009 SWYAA Global Assembly in Brisbane, the 2009 SWYAustralia fundraising dinner and the nomination process for an Australian delegation for SWY22. We have tried a number of new methods for promoting events via , the SWYAustralia website, word of mouth and social media with differing successes. We ll continue to look at how these platforms can be used together to ensure that information gets to the ex-py network as much as possible.
The nomination process for SWY22 in particular has been great learning experiences for us as an alumni. It was a huge process to spread the word far and wide to attempt to gain a delegation that represents the diversity of young people in Australia. Thanks to all of you who forwarded s, updated statuses and talked to peers in order to get the word out. Special thanks must go to Megan Cusack for putting together a massive list of over 300 youth related organisations/contacts for us to contact at very short notice. That will be a great resource for the Alumni for promoting the nomination process for future delegations. All of these events will be summarised in the latest edition of Keep on SWYing, the official newsletter of SWY Australia, which is currently in the works. There s still time to submit an article for this though, so please forward any news to communication@swyaustralia.org With the Aussie delegation for SWY22 returning soon and the upcoming AGM in Melbourne, there ll be surely be some more SWY related news coming your way soon. Looking forward to catching up with some of you soon in Melbourne. Cheers, Adam.
Special Report 3 rd SWYAA Global Assembly 2 nd 6 th September 2009, Brisbane Australia The 3 rd SWYAA ( Australia Alumni) global assembly was held in September 2009, Brisbane, Australia and has proven to be a great success in promoting the SWY spirit and ethos. To be invited by IYEO to co-host a global assembly was a milestone for SWYAustralia and indeed an honour. In planning and preparing for the GA, the organising committee dedicated a great deal of their personal time to develop and deliver a spirited and successful program. In fact this event revealed an extensive suite of knowledge, skills and expertise available within the SWYAustralia family and it was a privilege to be apart of an inclusive and united team where we shared and celebrated hard work and achievements. Thank you to all those who contributed to the success of the 3rd SWYAA GA The 3 rd SWYAA GA, held across 4 nights and 5 days and included the welcome reception host by the Brisbane City Lord Mayor s Office; an invitation to witness an Australian Citizen Ceremony; visit to Volunteering Queensland, Albert Park Flexi School and the Australian Zoo. Of significance, the GA provided a unique opportunity to engage with members of the Brisbane community and to share with them the benefits of the program; what the program meant to us; how the program has shaped us into the people we are today; and why the program needs to continue. The highlight of the program was undoubtedly the first ever 3 rd SWYAA GA Fundraising dinner. Attendees at the dinner included the Deputy Counsel General of Japan, Brisbane - Mr Ryosaku Tamura, CEO of the RBWH Foundation - Mr Peter Treseder, IYEO President - Tomoko Okawara, Professor Stan Catts, 3 rd SWYAA GA participants, ex-pys from many other SWY programs, members of the Brisbane community, friends and family members. We all were able to share the SWY spirit and promote awareness and mutual understanding of the diversity of cultures. The organising committee was extremely grateful to all who brought gifts for the Fundraising dinner, particularly thanks to Norman Cummings and Myra King who donated two exquisite paintings which where presented to Deputy Counsel General of Japan, Mr Ryosaku Tamura, and IYEO President, Ms Tomoko Okawara, on the night. The Fundraising Dinner raised $3480, which will go towards supporting a community research program into Adolescent Mental Health funded through the Royal Brisbane Women s Hospital Foundation. Before, during and after the GA ex-pys were provided other opportunities to get to know each other. Some experienced an Australian style BBQ dinner;
Others relaxed boating off shore. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who participated and contributed to the program. From a personal point of view I was delighted to witness the coming together of goodwill, reunion of old acquaintances and the beginning of new friendships spanning across a diversity of cultures. It is through these opportunities that the SWY family can continue the reconnection and expand our circle of influence within our local and international communities and demonstrate to the Japanese Government invaluable benefits of the SWY program. Paul Brushe, President - SWYAustralia
